Quickies: Top Sellers, iFolder, Motient, eBooks
It's difficult to judge the success of new handhelds, especially as companies generally don't announce sales for individual models. However, there are some clues that models recently announced by Palm Inc. are selling well. On the list of Buy.com's Top 25 Best Selling Products, the i705 is first and the m515 is second. The m130 is a still respectable ninth, considering its competing against everything else the webstore sells. -mashby

RE: The masses have NOT spoken
First, the "Buy.com top 25" is in no way an accurate or scientific measurement of consumer sentiment...BUT EVEN MORE IMPORTANT...
Buy.com doesn't even sell ANY of the Sony Clie models!! So there is no way for them to get on that list!! Go to Buy.com, to the PDA section, and click the link to list all models. You will find Palm, Casio, Compaq, HP, NEC, and Sharp...no Sony models at all. If you search the Buy.com site for "clie", the only products available are screen protectors and the thumbboard...no PDA's.
Nice try...

Obviously, the only thing you should feel sorry about is that you failed CRITICAL THINKING in school. It really makes you look stupid.
Palm Wins, Sony/PPC Loses
RE: Palm Wins, Sony/PPC Loses
But you are right about PPC.
RE: The masses have spoken
Lack of Critical Thinking
The original poster's argument (if you can call it that) is so full of holes you can drive a dump truck through it...
Did it ever occur to the original poster that Buy.com makes up this list to move merchandise? Did it ever occur that Buy doesn't sell Clies? Did it ever occur to the poster that this "list" isn't even statistically significant? I could go on and on?
There are enough people that don't believe in evolution and that the sun revolves around the earth because experts and holy books say so. I expect better from the posters to this board, but I guess my expectations were too high. School ain't what it used to be.
It's time to think and think critically.
RE: Lack of Critical Thinking
Anyway I wonder why did ed post this at all, since the sales figure of buy.com really doesnt mean anything, it's not like it's the industry standard, but one must agree that Palm is still doing pretty well by just feeding off it's brand regonition.
RE: The masses have spoken
I agree completely. Unfortunately, it seems that people are so obsessed with the idea of "my PDA is better" that they can't look past this. Sony users appear to insist that because Sony's offerings are more feature rich, etc., that this somehow means Palm's offerings are bad. The truth is, Sony's are better, but Palms are still good.
On the other side, Palm users are unwilling to admit that their PDA is simply not as good as the Sonys. As a result, they look for ways to "tear" the Sonys down--buttons, stylus, "washed-out reds," etc.
It'd be nice if we could all admit that there are a variety of machines out there, with a variety of features, and as long as they have the PalmOS, then they're good devices.
RE: The masses have spoken
Here's a rational, flame-retardant response to this. Because Buy.com doesn't sell Clies, you can't conclude that people like the Palm BETTER than the Clie. What you SHOULD have said is this:
"Sorry guys, but all the ranting and raving on this board does not change the fact that people still like the overall m515 package." You could also point out that even though Buy.com doesn't sell Clies, it's not the ONLY source of PDAs on the internet. People who seek Clies can go elsewhere, but they don't--they go to Buy.com and purchase a Palm m515 more often than any other PDA right now. This, at least, shows that the m515 is very popular.
RE: The masses have spoken
RE: The masses have spoken
But when I passed HK earlier this year, Clies
are the hot Palms there. I think
Sony probably have more than half the Palm market share
there now.

Anyway, the majority of readers at PDABuzz are PPC users. You only have to read over the comments to get that. It's like going to a Young Republicans meeting and asking whether people prefered George Bush or Al Gore.
Fake Information!!
How could it possible that they being sold more than some other products which exist in the market for 6 month?
Can you believe that a notebook costs $1994 stays in the FOURTH PLACE, another one costs $2629 stays in the SIXTH PLACE on the list?
I can see this list is absolutely not true by browse the first 10 of them, I am not even interested to move to the next page to see the rest of the list.
I don't have to "doubt" it, I totally DO NOT BELIEVE IN THIS because this list is waaaaaaaaay tooooooooooo fake !

Wow - two specious analogies in one post.
First, how do you "vote" for the Clie on Buy.com when it's not even on the ballot? The point of writing a critique, as you must on PDABuzz.com is that you can't stuff the ballot box.
Second, if in fact the "majority of readers" (and you took that survey WHEN?) are PPC users, it says something that PPC users picked 6 Palm OS devices in their Top 10 (3 Sony, 2 Palm, 1 HandEra). So I guess what that means, to use your Young Republicans metaphor is that 60% of the Young Republicans prefer Al Gore to George Bush.
By the way, looking at today's PDABuzz homepage, under Headlines, there are 5 Palm stories and 1 PPC. Under news stories there are 2 palm stories and 0 PPC stories. And in their discussion groups, there are 68K palm posts and 56K PPC posts. So I don't see how you can claim a PPC slant to that website.
RE: The masses have spoken
Sony's PR team has always been ruthless and ready to gin up a fake groundswell any way they can. Posting to message boards is one way to do that. Anybody remember the movie critic that their PR department MADE UP to give their movies better reviews.
Palm stock holders have seen their stock fall from 65 to 3 dollars in one year. This has caused the loyal shareholders and employees to want to make sure that their handhelds sell well, so they brutally defend Palm's products on this board.
The rest of the people fighting about Sony vs Palm are trying to validate their purchase of a $400 device.
Personally I am sick of it, this subject line had NOTHING to do with sony, yet most of the freaking posts are about it. The message boards on this site have become a broken record. Sony rules, no Palm, no Sony, no Palm.... ARGH!!!!
RE: The masses have spoken
I own several Palm's and two Sony CLIEs... and I like both of their products for different reasons. The high resolution screen on the CLIE T615 is my favourite reason. The more asthetic form factor of the m505/515 and the smaller size of the expansion memory is my reason for liking the Palm. It's just a matter of taste.
RE: Fake Information!!
See what buy.com had done.. just try to gain sale?
Shame on them!
They better take it out or provide more evidence to convince us.
RE: The masses have spoken

Yeah alot of kids buy Clie there, specially N7xx becasue of the mp3 player and high res screen, it's actually quite a good deal, And most adults there don't even believe palm could do anything useful. So basically Sony is gaining alot of ground (for palm) in most part of asia.
RE: The masses have spoken
Just goes to show that don't believe everything you read here (except from the Editor, of course). Go out and look at the products and try them for yourself.

RE: The masses have spoken, I'm disappointed
RE: The masses have spoken
So I guess you are a Palm employee too then.
A quote from the news about fake reviews:
"Other studios and their subsidiaries named include Sony, Lions Gate Films, DreamWorks, Vivendi Universal, Artisan Entertainment and Viacom.
The California Civil Code and the Federal Trade Commission set down laws saying advertisements should be truthful."
1) There are alot of company that's doing this, I am not saying it right to do it, but it would be unfare for other people if they don't do it while others are doing it.
2) "advertisements should be truthful" I wonder which company just got accused for misleading advertisement, is it parm, plam or something like that.
3) Sony is a huge company they got movie department, music department consumer electronics department, chemical department, the list goes on and on, so is that Sony Movie US Division Made a lie about their movie so we should assume that their chemical, electronics, music are all built upon lie ?
Get a life
