Unusual Cases and Cradle Announced

Posted By: Ed on Monday, April 15, 2002 2:53:23 PM

Speck Products has announced a pair of cases for Palm branded handhelds that will be available soon. It will also offer a cradle that helps keep handhelds safe from theft.

When the clasp is released, the FlipFlop automatically opens and a stylus holder angles up to present the stylus to the user. There will be versions for the Palm m500 series and V series.

When the user squeezes the sides on the AutoRollUp, as its name suggests the cover automatically rolls up behind the handheld. The sides are rubberized the make the case difficult to drop.

Like the other case, the company is working on versions of the AutoRollUp for the Palm m500 series and V series.

Speck Products is also close to releasing the LockDock, a cradle that holds the Palm inside until a password is entered into the handheld. There will be versions for the m500 series and the i705.

No prices are available yet for any of the products and the company's website only says they will all be available by the end of June.

Thanks to the friendly nXt for the tip. -Ed

That's a very revealing comment. Although functions and technology are the biggest sources of satisfaction for us, we derive a significant amount of satisfaction from the style, looks and overall "vibe" of our PDAs.

You make a good point. Upgrading the case is a cheap way to upgrade the handheld. A new, really cool looking case can keep someone happy with an aging handheld for several months. Something for all of us who are holding out for OS 5 to think about.

Speaking of case upgrades. Check out SmarterCase. They make some pretty wild looking cases!

Thanks for the unsolicited advertisement. Never would have considered your lame product if you hadn't advertised it inappropriately.

Thanks for your mean-spirited comments. I am sure you have succeeded in hurting the previous poster feelings. Mission Accomplished. The Smartcases looks just fine, by the way.

I ordered 3 of the Smarter Cases last week and they are quite cool, especially for that price. Nice if you don't want to look at the same case every day but don't want to spend 50$ for a new one.

I agree with the first poster, I really like the Kensingtons. Those cases are really nice.

The flip-top case might be OK, but that roll-up thing?... to big to hold!

 Does LockDock become a prison...

if you have a fatal error on your handheld? I can see them wanting to protect the reset hole to avoid someone doing a hard reset out of malice. However, if you cannot access the reset hole, how do you get your device out?..

I believe there should be a clip-on to hold onto the Palm that allows you to take it out either to hotsyn or whatever. So you can just do a reset to it then.

Big ugly garage door roll up thing
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/16/2002 5:05:08 PM #

I don't get it? why do we spend four hundred bucks to get a ultra light slim compact palm just to go and stick it in some big ugly garage door roll up thing.
and if that flip cover don't flip all the way back and under and out of the way it's going to suck.
HEY PALM! design a PDA with a BUILT IN CASE! like out of strong but light weight high tech materials. not a cheep plastic cap or leather cardboard flap thing but real world protection with class and function.
The most important thing is that the PDA feel good in your hand.

I'd like to see a PalmOS device that is encased on titanium instead of plastic. =)
