Hi-Res Version of Sheet To Go Released

DataViz has released a version of Sheet To Go that supports the 320 by 320 screens on some Sony handhelds. It is a free upgrade for registered users. The hi-res version allows the user to view spreadsheets at regular size or zoom out to get a wider view of the sheet. The company hasn't released a version of Word To Go that does the same thing.

A Japanese version of Sheet to Go with hi-res support has been available for a week or so bundled with the new Sony T650C.

It seems likely Sony put some pressure on DataViz to add hi-res support to their product. While Sony's hi-res screens are a nice feature for U.S. and European users, they are almost a necessity to make the complex Japanese written language readable on a handheld screen. But a 320 by 320 screen goes to waste if a word processor or spreadsheet app displays everything at 160 by 160.

Documents to Go won't be the first Palm office suite to offer support Sony's hi-res screens. For example, all of Quickoffice already does so.

still not full screen

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/19/2002 5:30:29 PM #
since this is not 'fullscreen" on the nr series, might as well just use quicksheet or tiny sheet (although i prefer quicksheet)

That may be true, but I believe SheetToGo is packed in with the Sony handhelds.

what do you packed - it is not in RAM, it is simply included and percived to be "free". you might as well use something that has full screen capability

Big Deal. Too little, too late.

For being the biggest (so they say) Palm OS software company, they sure are the slowest. I can't believe Sony put this software in the box, when it's so feeble compared to Tinysheet and QuickSheet (my preference also).

Where's the NR support?
Where's the word processing support?
Incredible that so many people consider this acceptable behavior for a company that pretends to be the "leader" and tout "#1" all over the place.

gimme a break.

I partialy agree. However after trying the other products I found docstogo to work the most reliably. Which I will take over high res any day.

Actually I like this new release. It is at least free of charge! I am sure DataViz will release hi-res version of WordToGo soon as well.

I was afraid that DataViz would charge money and only support hi-res from version 5. They already had charged $30 (can't remember exact amount) for upgrading from version 3 to version 4 -- for what I considered to be a minor upgrade (Presentation to Go is a disgrace compared to the Margi software that came with Clie).

Don't knock it. I have been using DTG for quite sometime now, and am extremely happy. I rely heavily on the portability of docs and spreadsheets and its ability to synch between 2 computers. It all works FLAWLESSLY. Granted, they are a little slow with the high res technology, but the software is stable, mature and very reliable. I am sure they will make efforts to add high res support and full screen support.

Just my 2 cents.

I downloaded it last night, and hey, it's something I would have shelled out $15 just to have. The screen stay crisp and it is easy to read. Let's just hope everything else DTG has can be tweaked for hi-res sooner than later. AND hopefully, this will easily transition to OS 5.

It looks like I'm going to buy it. I already own the QuickSheet office, but Quicksheet doesn't maintain formatting and my spreadsheets look like crap on the handheld. And, if I make a change on the handheld, my desktop version ends up looking like crap, too, because the formatting is lost. I understand the one of DataViz's strengths is maintaining formatting/features on the desktop app, even if the Palm version doesn't.

Upgrade Charges

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/19/2002 8:56:32 PM #
Do all of these 'Office' suites charge for their upgrades? I can understand a charging for a major upgrade 4.x to 5.x, but my 615 came with 4.002, and I've got to pay $30 if I want the 3 new features offered by 4.005. Microsoft is even that bad.

cyn @ 6/19/2002 11:30:55 PM #
It is a free upgrade for registered users.

did I miss something?

go for it
RE: Upgrade Charges
cpwoo @ 6/20/2002 1:02:19 AM #
$30 charge is to upgrade from Doc to Go Standard edition to Professional edition. The difference is inclusion of Presentation to Go, a read-only version of Powerpoint.

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/20/2002 9:39:32 AM #
I stand corrected, it is a free upgrade. Their website isn't easily traversed, and I went to the wrong place the first time.

Day late; dollar short...

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/19/2002 8:53:25 PM #
And soon they will support Palm OS 4.0... actually when I asked them about this lag, I was told "Fall."
[presently you do can't sync your docs beyond Palm OS 3.x on any handheld device]

Their reasoning was that OS 4.0 was "just released"... apparently DataViz is unaware of the beta period, or hopes that we are!?

RE: Day late; dollar short...
I.M. Anonymous @ 6/19/2002 9:59:00 PM #
Don't follow you on this. I have an M505 with DocsToGo and it has OS 4.0. Guess what it syncs my files and has so with no issue.
RE: Day late; dollar short...
cpwoo @ 6/20/2002 1:03:35 AM #
I don't understand it either. Documents to Go supports my memory stick rather well. My files reside nicely on memory stick. I believe that I can also put some of the apps (not all) to memory stick as well, but I've found it to be too slow to be practical.

After posting several comments on this thread, I feel like I am a spokesperson for DataViz... Geez. I am not crazy about this software, but it was what I ended up paying for (once for professional version, once again by receiving a bundled version when I purchased my Clie) and reasonably satisfied with it.

Palm DESKTOP 4.0 Doesn't Sync...
I.M. Anonymous @ 6/20/2002 9:17:28 AM #
Palm DESKTOP 4.0 is the "newly" release software that Dataviz is not up-to-speed on (not the OS).

It does not sync and won't until later this year.

RE: Day late; dollar short...
I.M. Anonymous @ 6/20/2002 9:51:09 AM #
Still confused, I have Palm desktop 4.0.1 and DTG works just fine. And I love the updated Sheet To Go. Very nice free upgrade. And yes, I find DTG the most stable and reliable too.
RE: Day late; dollar short...
I.M. Anonymous @ 6/20/2002 5:20:22 PM #
I think it's only on the Mac that it doesn't work with Palm Desktop 4. DataViz is not carbonized yet.

will it support full screen on nr series?

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/19/2002 11:48:50 PM #
is a high res, and full screen verion of doc to go available???
RE: will it support full screen on nr series?
I.M. Anonymous @ 6/20/2002 2:51:46 AM #
It only support 320x320, NOT 320x480.

Upgraded

Boze @ 6/20/2002 9:26:29 AM #
Thank you DataViz--and I hope y'all are reading this. I just got the upgrade--it looks great!

I almost feel like I have a new PDA with my new hi-res versions of SilverScreen, Kinoma Player, and Sheet To Go.

When will SlideShowToGo support Hi-Res?

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/20/2002 6:26:55 PM #
Personaly, I like to see a Hi-Res version of Slide Show To Go. This is where the Hi-Res can make a difference.

Not so fast....

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/20/2002 9:54:11 PM #
This upgrade doesn't work on v. 3.x. However, if I fork over $30 for the 4.x upgrade (which I don't need) I'll get "free" hi res support on my T615.

615 Upgraded at no cost

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/20/2002 11:22:20 PM #
I thought this was going to cost me. I only have the OEM version of Desktop to Go. The one that came with my Clie 615. I went to the link and put in my registration no. This can be found on the Desktop part of the software. It made me answer a few questions, but now I have the update. This makes the spreadsheet much more useful.

upgrade sheet to go from v3.005 to get high res?

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/21/2002 4:42:09 AM #
It is possible to get the sheet to go upgrade free of charge to get the high resolution?
i tried to upgrade it from version 3.005 and it does not allow me to open any documents ! I had to revert it to the older version of sheet to go.
It is a pity...

/D.

Really, Really Slow Recalc ...

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/22/2002 10:35:50 AM #
I don't really care about the visual improvements for SheetToGo. It's by far the slowest spreadsheet when recalculating. It's a shame; it supports more formulas than QuickSheet and also keeps formatting better when synching, but it's horribly slow when recalculating.

And as someone who worked for 7 years on a PC spreadsheet I know something about recalculation optimization.

RE: Really, Really Slow Recalc ...
I.M. Anonymous @ 6/23/2002 2:36:54 PM #
Yep, it's slow. Fortunately, I only use a relatively small spreadsheet on my Clie, so I can live with it. I imagine it's brutal on a large sheet. I will say, though, that hi res makes this program far more useable to me. I have to squint, but at least I don't have to scroll side to side near as often.
