Handango has released some statistics about the handheld applications, eBooks, and other content it sold last quarter. Plenty of people seem to be using their handhelds to get things done. The most popular category of applications was Personal Productivity, with 23% of sales. However, there seems to be a lot of goofing off going on, too, as in second place was Games at 20% and Entertainment applications was third at 18% of the applications Handango sold. The Entertainment category includes eBooks, videos, and that sort of thing. The average selling price for an application was $20. Development tools were also popular, accounting for 14% of sales. Medical apps accounted for 7% and Travel 6%. At 5% and below were Education, Business, and other. Among handheld users, iPaq owners were the most likely to buy from Handango but this doesn't mean iPaq owners buy the most apps in general. This figure was certainly affected by the fact that Handango's biggest rival, PalmGear, doesn't sell Pocket PC software. Next was Sony Clié users, though Handango doesn't break these out into the various models. After that was Palm m500 series users. Next was HP Jornada owners and Palm Vx owners. Among smartphone users, Samsung SPH-i300 bought the most apps, followed by the Kyocera 6035. Next can the Handspring Treo then the Fujitsu F503i and O2 xda. During this quarter, the average customer bought 1.7 apps or other files. The top ten games sold were:

Great games and hope some of those support hi res RE: Popcap my favorite!!!I.M. Anonymous @ 8/22/2002 1:31:28 PM #
it might support hi-res, but how many color does it support in m130? RE: Popcap my favorite!!!htomlinson @ 8/22/2002 1:33:19 PM #
Hi-Res versions of the PopCap games coming soon! (By popular demand!) I'm hoping to get some of our upcoming releases into next year's top ten, though :)
As for how many colours... How about "we'll be using 256 specific colours out of a 16 bit palette (65k colours), which on an m130 will be visible with an automatic conversion into 12 bit colour." I'm pretty sure that the difference will not be noticeable. A greater difference is made by the slower refresh rate of the screen on an m130, meaning that animations look more blurry! Regards, Howard Tomlinson (Astraware).

Those numbers seem to reflect the results of the current poll. I have alot of trouble paying much more that twenty dollars for a Palm application however. RE: Follows the poll. Palm apps can be costly.I.M. Anonymous @ 8/22/2002 12:58:41 PM #
Note that they said the average application price was $20. Was that the average of all the Palm *and* Pocket PC applications sold via Handago, or just the Palms? Wouldn't the average be lower if they were only measuring Palm applications? RE: Follows the poll. Palm apps can be costly.
> Was that the average of all the Palm *and* Pocket PC applications sold
> via Handago, or just the Palms? The statistics are for all applications sold at Handango. > Wouldn't the average be lower if they were only measuring Palm applications? Probably not. It might even be the other way around. The average price for the Top 10 Pocket PC applications on Handango right now is $21. The average price for the Top 10 Palm OS applications is $25.50.

It's funny that the games category was the second best seller overall, but all of the top 10 sellers are games. Not Top ten APPS, Top Ten GAMESI.M. Anonymous @ 8/22/2002 11:58:11 AM #
Ed. The report says TOP TEN GAMES not APPS!
RE: Where is the stat?
You can download it here from Handango:

They say that the average customer buys 1.7 applications, but how many customers are we talking about. How many applications were sold? How much money exchanged hands? How much were for developers?
Does anyone knows if somebody has ever published these kind of numbers?

>Among handheld users, iPaq owners were the most likely to buy from Handango but this > doesn't mean iPaq owners buy the most apps in general. Nice spin. This stat is definitely something developers should pay attention to. With Pocket PCs in #1 and #4 position, it tells me that even though Pocket PCs are around 27-28% of the total market, they make up a bigger part of the software aftermarket. So much for the "Palm Economy" huh? RE: iPAQ users?I.M. Anonymous @ 8/23/2002 1:42:41 PM #
Nice idea, except that it isn't true. PPC's worldwide marketshare is about 20% and HP makes up 18.6% of that. Developers won't write for PPC for the same reason they don't write for Macs: not enough of them to justify the cost. Besides, if they write a successful program, Microsoft will steal it and include it in PPC 2003 for free. Another company ruined by Microsoft. RE: iPAQ users?I.M. Anonymous @ 8/23/2002 1:55:48 PM #
>PPC's worldwide marketshare is about 20% and HP makes up 18.6% of that.
Yeah, and Toshiba makes up 3.8%, Hi-Tech Wealth (Asia) has 4.6% and Minren (Asia) has 2.2%. Add that up on your Palm. 29.2% share. >Developers won't write for PPC for the same reason they don't write for Macs: not enough of them to justify the cost. Tell that to the authors that have written several thousand apps for Pocket PCs in the past 2.5 years. Oh, and in case you missed the market share report - it is at http://news.com.com/2100-1040-946298.html
