More color confirmations & color app contest

This email was forwarded to me by a fellow Palm developer. It looks like it was sent out to all the registered Palm Developers this morning...

Dear Solution Provider:
Color is coming! By now you all should have heard about or perhaps even seen the newest release of the Palm OS that includes color support. In the spring of 2000, one of the hardware manufacturers that makes products based on the Palm OS will release a device with a color display! This licensee is interested in showing some of the stable, useful, quality, color applications that exist at the time of the product launch in its media campaign and possibly on its web site. They also want to give you, the developers, enough time to prepare for this new product introduction. More...

In order to provide assistance and support to your development efforts, the licensee would like to invite all developers who have created color applications (that are stable on the color emulator!) to submit them for review. A number of applications will be selected and their developers will then be invited to a Color Device Developer Connection event on February 2nd. Please be advised that participants will be asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement before entering the event. Information regarding the agreement will be sent with the details of the event.

At this event, the licensee will have several color devices on hand for testing and viewing your applications. Moreover, we will have several Palm OS engineers available to interact with.

In order to summit your color application for review, send it to devrelations@palm.com as soon as possible (please ensure that your app is stable, useful and of high quality).

We hope that you will create applications in all categories, from games to productivity enhancements to document readers to image viewers. Anything that uses color in an interesting way.

For further details on the Palm OS version 3.5, including technical details and color-enabled emulators, please visit http://www.palm.com/devzone We are delighted to assist you in order to make your color applications successful.

Comon already

Bikemaniac @ 1/20/2000 10:44:00 AM #
So is it coming or not? I assume the "licensee" is sony, but why not name them? I want to buy a TRGPRO but dont want it to be outdated in a month. James at seahorse SW, thinks (does he have a connected informant?) that its going to be more like mid to late 2000. Another good point is there is no color screen that doesnt use backlighting, and that HAS to eat more batteries. What do you people think?
who is it?
when will palm do it?
Should I buy the TRG that I covet so much?
Thanks
Bikemaniac

Actually, there is a color screen that doesn't use backlighting. The GameBoy Color has a very nice, richly colored screen, and no backlight at all. The battery life on the unit is nothing to scoff at, either.

The question is, do you really need 340 mb of storage space on a machine (the TRGPRO) that won't be able to play mp3s?

Well, I wasnt sure about the gameboy, thanks for the info, I think I will go check out a Color Gameboy at the toystore.
I dont want the microdrive (340MB) I would like the 64m card though for $75. The backup capability while on the road would be real nice. As being able to use the GOType with a modem at the same time!
And I hope that there will be an app written that will allow the mp3s to be played (although in mono) on the TRG. and think alarms that you can hear even in your belt case!
thanks for the reply,
Bike

Probably because they figured a Palm developer would violate their NDA and forward the email here (or similar public place).

Guess they were right...

I decided to go with the TRGpro, and I LOVE it! All I could ask for, and if I need a color screen, I have a notebook computer. I know others disagree on this, but for me, the TRGpro works wonderfully, and everything becomes outdated really quickly anyway, but with this, I can add on as necessary. I guess you need to decide what's most important to you and go with that. Oh, the customer service with TRG is absolutely INCREDIBLE, and that's not a small issue either, in my book.

I totally agree. If I wanted color, I could have purchased a CE Device for the price of my Palm V.

I love my Palm V for what it is used for. Color would be a slight improvement and I look forward to seeing what palm can do with it but im extremely satisfied with what I have.

When they create a device as small as the Palm V with color that doesn't chew batteries, then I will consider my options. Right now, they are supposedly throwing this color screen into a PalmIII size device which tells me that the device will need to be larger to handle the color and probably go through batteries.

Color Palm in Spring? No thanks, Ill enjoy what I have and wait.

Hrm...One must wonder if the color progams will be able to run on the grayscale Palms-or will we be left in the dust?

Upgrades

Could someone with a palm V upgrade to the color screen
8 megs? I would want to upgrade instead of buying!
