Wireless Device Management Tools For Treos

Action Engine and Handspring have announced plans to bring Action Engine's software tools for over-the-air provisioning and device management to Handspring's Treo communicators. These tools give wireless service providers sophisticated means of managing devices deployed on their networks.

With the Action Engine Mobile Web Services Platform, network operators can create, manage and deploy browserless data applications that fully exploit the capabilities of smart devices and operating systems. Action Engine's tools dramatically simplify device configuration and registration, software maintenance, service provisioning, security, wireless data backup and restore, applications downloads, and more.

"Providing simplified device management that ensures a highly satisfying customer experience is critical for operators launching services wrapped around smartphones like Treo," said Joe Sipher, vice president of worldwide marketing for Handspring. "Action Engine brings ease-of-use for device management and wireless provisioning of applications and services."

The companies intend to work together to integrate Action Engine's Mobile Web Services Platform into the Treo line. With the Action Engine Mobile Web Services Platform, network operators can create, manage and deploy browserless data applications that fully exploit the capabilities of smart devices and operating systems. The companies will also work together on co-marketing and sales in some focused channels, though no timeline is available today with regards to the launch of Action Engine-enabled Treo products.

"Mobile operators need to offer services on smart mobile devices that are intuitive and easy to use. The Action Engine approach offers an enhanced user experience by allowing applications to share information. This opens new possibilities for operators and developers to create appealing applications and drive usage of data services," said Michael Ransom, senior analyst, Current Analysis.

The Action Engine Mobile Web Services Platform is a client-server solution for smart devices that, by using a thick client, provides a rich and easy-to-use experience, unparalleled network efficiency, and convenient and always-available access to applications and data independent of a network connection.

Action Engine provides a free downloadable SDK for its Mobile Web Services Platform that allows developers to build smart client, smart server applications using industry standard XML. These applications then run on top of the Mobile Web Services Platform on smart device operating systems like Symbian, Microsoft Pocket PC Phone Edition OS and Microsoft Windows Powered Smartphone 2002 OS.

Good News But Is It Too Late?

I for one think this is great for Handspring, they continue to improve the corporate support of the Treo. My only concern about this is that in this economy, well I don't see the majority of firms replacing their blackberrys or just cellphones in general. But who knows, with Handspring mainly selling to enterprises now its not as easy to keep track of their sales. Lets hope they can stay strong until things get better economically. I have a feeling if times were better you'd see the Treo become the ubiquitous device in corporations world-wide, especially those that have M$ based infrastructure.

This is more of a system for wireless operators and enterprise use. It allows remote device management and wireles software updates.
