It's Getting Crowded In Here

I deleted my homebrew copy of GDial Pro and went to install the App Catalog version. So naturally the App Catalog complained that I needed to delete more apps install a new one. Palm better fix this problem in 1.2.

420 app

What a ummm, unique application!

It just shows poster art from the Moonalice band in a small space or rotates the stuff as your wallpaper. I'm sure McNamee had nothing to do with this.

Begs the question - how many other applications have been submitted by Palm people instead of outside developers.

Easy fix for that - make them legal.

In fact, that would solve a whole lot of problems and save billions of dollars per year.

Nah, makes too much sense.

[can't remember the last time I saw a news item about two liquor store owners shooting each other over territory; how about you?]

Oh good grief - if you don't have independent developers interested in developing for your platform what do you do?

Pay them.

^^ You didn't suspect they were doing this already? Microsoft has been pulling the same trick with the Zune HD, trying to lure iPhone developers.

Fact is Palm has to do something to get the app ball rolling, and since that something is obviously not going to be spectacular, iPhone-esque sales numbers, cold hard cash is the next best alternative...

(I'd write a post on this, bar for the fact that I start a new job today and my PIC posting time is going to get severely curtailed....)

(it should be also be noted that we already knew this. Pivotal Labs ain't working for free...)

Palm is a relatively tiny company with a very finite amount of $. Instead of tossing $ (and let's be fair, we have no idea HOW much is in this "app war chest") to the wind like that, why don't they spend it on getting the hardware, the OS, and the SDK up to snuff (not necessarily in that order)?

Or, better yet, since they won't create a non-Phone WebOS device, send out a few thousand kits consisting of an unlocked Pre + SDK + documentation to a wide variety developers large & small.

Here's how they could go a LONG way to getting me to buy a WebOS device:

-Get a 16GB+ Pre out on Verizon ASAP

-Release a non-phone WebOS device

-Bring out WebOS 2.0 ASAP with improved PIMs, video recording, voice memos, and external storage volume support

-Pay Chapura some of those big bucks to write an improved version of Echo that supports wired & BT synchronization (not just wi-fi).

-Pay Access to develop a Windows 7 (32 & 64-bit) compliant version of Palm Desktop with wired, wireless and cloud sync capability for both data and media. This would address a TON of issues in one fell swoop. There's nothing wrong with being honest and admitting that they were wrong and that cloud computing ain't quite ready for primetime.

You know what I think they could use? More mergers, spinoffs, acquisitions, and SEC filings.

I mean, that worked well for the last 10 years, right?

Cheapshot, I know. But come on. The inbreeding and distractions in this company since its inception could fill a book. And it already did!

Shush, young feller! You'd best only sing hte praises of Palm on this site! Otherwise you might be publicly humiliated and admonished by the innumerable hordes of Pre owners here!

In fact, you newly-graduated n00b, if you keep bad-mouthing Palm, you'll never get that cushy PR position with them in Sunnyvale that I know you're hoping to land!

Yes but you're not supposed to call it that, just like you weren't supposed to call your Treo a PDA even though it ran the exact same OS as your Palm Pilot.

New product category for Palm?

"Palm Pilot? Sounds like a wanking machine!"

Apologies if this was posted before. Quite NSFW but definitely worth a chuckle seeing one of the finest actors to ever grace the stage or the screen fumbling with a Palm III!
