Palm Pre Shown Off on Late Night TV

Palm Pre TVEngadget's Joshua Topolsky made an appearance on last nights NBC's Late Night with Jimmy Fallon show. While eventful as that is in itself, the entire segment basically revolved around the Palm Pre.

The new host of the Late Show, Jimmy Fallon, is apparently a big techie himself and has previously shown a lot of interest in Palm and the new Pre. As such, Engadget was able to get a loaner Pre to bring on the show and essentially showed it off the entire time.

Read on to watch the entertaining clip from the show after the break.

The full episode can be found online here and you can view more details at engadget.

Nice to see Jimmy getting his routine going. He was looking pretty nervous on his first couple of shows.

Can remember a celebrity guest pulled out his iPhone on Conan's vrs of the show once. I can't recall that he ever gave the iPhone a whole segment like this. Hope Palm's promo/marketing money doesn't bankrupt the company with high profile stunts like this before Pre hits the shelves

I remember Conan doing a funny video on other uses for the iPhone.

Also how much does it cost to send someone out on a talk show with a demo unit?

Oh yeah. He did that bit: "It chops it dices..." bit but it ended with "...it does everything except make a phone call" or something like that. It wasn't exactly a promo like this. But any publicity...

As for the cost, I've always wondered how much money changes hands on these shows. Rarely does a guest appear on any of these shows without plugging a product - be it a movie, TV series, a political agenda, a web site. It was kinda surreal seeing your presidential candidates advertising this way the last year or two. Obviously the movie studios, network, marketing firms are picking up the tabs for this exposure. Do you think Oprah actually pays for the items she gives away on her show?

I heard Leno promoting "The Watchman" the other day - now you would have to be paid big time to endorse a pile of #$*&&^! like that train wreck.

^^ Hey, Watchmen wasn't all bad. The pacing was incredibly uneven - the flashbacks into the past could have been trimmed down a fair bit - but overall it was pretty cool. Rorschach deserved his own movie. Awesome character.

Although I couldn't help but laugh every time the Blue Wang appeared onscreen. I think I ruined it for my Watchmen-reading friends who all seemed to be taking it very very seriously. "Are you a f*cking child or what?" one of them asked me when the credits were rolling. (C'mon! It's a frickin' blue schlong! how can you take a naked glowing blue guy seriously? I kept thinking of Tobias the never-nude from Arrested Development and his attempt to join the Blue Man Group...)

Heh heh. Blue.

I watched it with my wife and saw her dozing off and remember envying her. I would have walked out (as the only other two people in the theatre did) but I was watching it in gold class and had some chicken strips on the way. I should have got the hint when I booked the tickets online and noticed all seats were available - this on the 1st week.

Sorry - I get what they were trying to do. Loved 300 (bought the graphic novel even). Watchmen? I think they spent more energy attempting to shock the audience than they did trying to put together a good flick.

The movie wasn't all that great, but if you guys have the time, read the graphic novel. It's a phenomenal story.

I've gotta admit that when I first saw Jimmy was taking over the show... I groaned. BUT, after watching him a few times and seeing him start to relax, I've got to admit he can be pretty funny! Congrats Jimmy... and awesome to see you do a tech segment on a talk show!

What?

Jimmy Fallon sucked! This was basically one big ad for the Pre. What a sham on both accounts.

Who will fail first, Fallon or Palm?

This was basically one big ad....

Errr.. isn't that kinda the point of late night talk shows? Not really intended to be hard hitting journalism. Just a platform for a plug of some kind.

I can see you're not a fan, but Jimmy's OK. His band is great. I'd have to say I think your failure prediction is a bit harsh (on both accounts)

Fallon or Palm? Tough, but I'd guess Palm goes down in a blaze of glory first, with Fallon following shortly thereafter.

Fallon needs better advertising; maybe he can get McNamee to talk him up a bit!

Q: Is it better than the iphone

A: It'll give it a run for its money

More importantly - it isn't finished and Palm is running out of money

I watched the Tina Fey episode and was worried about the show. But this segment, he has his rythm. Bring back the engadget guy once a week. Put a techie/internet twist on the whole show. Show celebrity guests's Facebook, etc...

Good luck to him. I enjoyed his redscoks movie and SNL news segments.

Maybe bring on Ryan as well?

Pre on Jimmy Fallon

bhartman34 @ 3/11/2009 3:05:02 PM # Q
I thought it was a good segment, overall.

I agree it might have been a little too much of a plug, though. It's one thing to have someone come on your show and talk about their show/movie, but it feels a little different to me when the host is actually in on it. It's not so much of a con as it is sort of egocentric, as if the show isn't about the viewers, but all about what the host wants to do and see and talk to. I had the same unease watching Fallon with Tina Fey. Hopefully when he gets confortable with the show he can do something a little bit riskier.

On the other hand, the Pre did look good. The zooming in and out, the app switching, and the orientation switches all looked pretty snappy, from what I could see. All of that is UI stuff, though. It'll be more interesting to get an idea of what you can do with it, and what kind of apps start coming out for it.
