LandWare has announced the immediate availability of Leonard Maltin’s 2005 Movie Guide for Palm OS and Pocket PC handhelds and smartphones. The new version includes over 300 new films and wireless updates.
The application's rich feature set easily secures its title as the most comprehensive movie guide for handhelds and smartphones alike. It is accepted that some of the more obscure Japanese titles such as Batoru rowaiaru (Battle Royale) and Kokaku Kidotai (Ghost in the Shell) are not in there. However most of the more popular cult animated Japanese films are represented in this guide including: Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi, Mononoke-hime, Tenku no shiro Rapyuta, Sennen joyu, Majo no takkyubin, Tengoku no tobira etc The current guide contains over 160 Japanese films including the works of Akira Kurosawa of course. Having said this LandWare should look into seeing if Kokaku Kidotai can be included as that is a pretty popular cult Japanese animated title. As for the mainstream, I just used the Leonard Maltin Guide to find the reviews and details for 91 out of the 97 latest releases at Blockbuster. I have also been using the guide for over a year to lookup films on HBO, IFC and Starz and have had a hit rate that approaches 95%. I think this is pretty acceptable given the parameters of this product. LandWare does provide free updates throughout the year to keep the content fresh. As Good At It Gets
I'm a huge movie geek. I sometimes watch 5 movies in a week. And I have been very happy with this program. Let's not forget to mention the excellent feature set included with this program. It's not just a list of movies; you can do an extrodinary abount of organzing with it. It can tell you what movie you rented from where and even sound an alarm to remind you to return it on time (very very very essential for me). Plus you can write your own personal reviews and ratings for each movie. If you're using it to keep track of movies in general and not just for reviews, you can add the movies that aren't already in there by yourself. I never expected to find "I Worship His Shadow" in there, so I added it. Its a great place to keep all the info together. There is no program that contains every single movie ever made. The app itself is great and the linking between database is excellent but the content could be much better. The other grip I had with the program was that some actors or actresses appears twice - for example Robin Wright has two database one under her maiden name under under Robin Wright Penn (after she married Sean Penn). Doesn't concern me - I'm not into either. Passing interest in anime. I watch the occassonaly arthouse movie, but for the most part watch the summer blockbuster movies.

Then I tried to think of some of the films I love. Battle Royale - nope not there. What about the cult anime Ghost in the Shell? Nope. Okay those are Japanese films so lets try something a little more mainstream - The Hole which contains Keira Knightly - also not there. Shaun of the Dead? What!
Overall this is an average application (the content is weak) but nothing beats IMDB.
