Eyemodule Camera Now Available

The eyemodule digital camera, which allows Visors to take snapshots, went on sale today for $149.95. The eyemodule utilizes a CMOS imaging array to create digital images with very low power requirements. Preview images are viewed on the screen of the Visor in real time. More than 500 small black & white images, or more than 125 large black & white images, or more than 25 color images can be stored on a Visor Deluxe. Software included with the eyemodule enables images to be viewed, printed, and e-mailed as JPEG files. Images can be categorized, annotated, beamed to other Visor handhelds or PalmOS devices, or transferred to a PC. It should soon be available on the HandSpring store and it is available now at PalmGear.

Is it just me or does this, and the similar Kodak Palmpix for Palms, look like a rip off?
You can get a basic VGA resolution still camera for this sort of money which has it's own
memory. All these units consist of is a capture device which should cost no more than half
that.

Is it just the premium you pay for the luxury of capturing to a Palmtop?

I think the point of attaching a camera to a PDA
is that you get the additional functionality that
a camera doesn't offer. Plus, why carry around a
palm and a camera to snap basic quality pictures?

You should also consider the form factor. It doesn't
really look like a camera. I think it would be
perfect to use in meetings when people fall asleep...

Whoever is Out There ordering it, when you get it, let us know if the picture quality has been improved or if it is still at the absolutely worthless and useless level as shown in Julie's review at The Gadgeteer. The point of this module is to be able to do covert photos -- that is, if the photos aren't as bad as shown on Julie's site. mc

OK, I just got my eyemodule and it's alright. The cost is a little too high for the picture quality.
I'll have to play with it a little more -- I just opened the package. If I can figure out how to post a picture I will...

Picture Quality

There is a gallery of photos on the eyemodule site (http://www.eyemodule.com/gallery.htm" CLASS=NEWS>http://www.eyemodule.com/gallery.htm) but I have to admit I'm not overwhelmed by the quality.

On the other hand, the Kodak site, when talking about their camera, talks about the convenince of saving images of things for temporary use. They sugest taking a photo of a whiteboard instead of copying down all the notes written on it. Or even grabbing a photo of where your car is in the parking lot. I'm not sure if this justifies $150, though.

An email to the eyemodule people re: pic quality has gone unanswered. I am suspicious of their "gallery." Looks like the work of a pro as the light is just too damned good for what an everyday person could accomplish. let us know when you get yours, Out There! mc

I've been told the Kodak PalmPix will ship at the end of April or early May. I'll have a note up on the site when it's out.
