Palm & Telstra Launch Pre-paid Centro in Australia
Six months after its United States debut, Palm's Centro has found its way Down Under, with the company today announcing via press release that their latest smartphone will be arriving on Telstra's pre-paid network as of May 26 in sparkling Glacier White. Sporting an initial price tag of $299, the pre-paid Centro will be targeted at "traditional mobile phone users".
Telstra's version of the Centro will also feature a dedicated link to their BigPond service, allowing users to access exclusive BigPond content. A Palm spokesperson has told Palminfocenter via telephone that while the Centro will initially be locked to Telstra's network, the company is not ruling out an unlocked version in the future.
Telstra's executive director of Consumer and Marketing, Tim Copper, said:
"Pre-Paid mobile phone users now have access to a number of features not available on standard mobile handsets with the addition of the Palm Centro to the Telstra Pre-Paid range. The Palm Centro will allow customers to stay on top of email and text messages, as well as access the Internet, manage appointments, view documents or make use of a multitude of other productivity-boosting and entertaining features."
The Centro is a quad-band GSM/EDGE smartphone running Palm OS Garnet v5.4.9. It has a 320x320 pixel touchscreen display, Bluetooth v1.2, a 1.3 megapixel digital camera with video capture and 64MB of RAM with a microSD slot for memory expansion. You can find our Centro review here.
