palmOne Treo Smartphone Giveaway

Celebrating more than 1 million Treo 600 smartphones sold worldwide, palmOne, today is giving away a Treo smartphone every 5 minutes for 12 hours, from 9 a.m. PDT until 9 p.m. PDT.

Anyone in the United States can register for a chance to win a Treo smartphone (no purchase necessary) by visiting www.seeTreo.com, and everyone who registers (excluding winners) will receive a coupon code for up to 50 percent off Treo products purchased through a special URL, which will be provided in a confirmation email to registrants within 72 hours.

"Since the Treo 180 began shipping in 2002, we've sold more than 1.7 million Treo devices, and customers continue to regard the Treo as one of the best smartphones on the market," said Page Murray, palmOne vice president of marketing. "This 'Thanks a Million' promotion is our way of saying thank you."

The Treo 600 and Treo 650 continue to be an essential tool for a growing range of mobile professionals. In a world where everyone is mobile and everything is digital, people demand more mobile access to the information they care about most. The Treo family delivers this by offering mobile workers a great phone first, combined with great data applications, such as email, Palm OS organizer, web connectivity and other specialized applications -- all in a single, sleek device.

The Treo 600 smartphone can be purchased through the top U.S. carriers Cingular Wireless, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless -- and is available on almost 40 international carrier networks in more than 25 countries, such as Bell Mobility and Rogers Wireless in Canada, Orange and Vodafone in Europe, Singtel in Singapore, and América Móvil and Telefonica in Latin America.

The Treo 650, announced last October, builds on the groundbreaking Treo 600 design, making it easier than ever for mobile professionals to stay connected. The expanded capabilities of the Treo 650 include integrated Bluetooth wireless technology, a higher-resolution screen, more advanced multimedia capabilities, a removable battery, non-volatile memory, an improved QWERTY backlit keyboard, and support for direct corporate email access to Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 using VersaMail email software.

The popularity of the Treo 650 smartphone continues to grow worldwide as more carriers sign on to offer the newest member of the Treo family, which operates on GSM/GPRS/EDGE and CDMA/1xRTT networks. Treo 650 carriers worldwide now total 19, including Cingular Wireless and Sprint in the United States.

Geeesh! Yep, that'll make me write em' off ... "I didn't get a 1:1,000 chance of a FREE device". People hammer you for everything, so you celebrate by giving the $600 things away and people still complain. Phenominal mindsets I must say.

Actually, they are just clearing out reserves for the Treo 670 with WM2005! :-o

Wait a sec, this looks way too odd.

"50% off of a new Treo Purchase"

Is P1 trying to get rid of the Treo 650s for the Win Mob version of the Treo 670?

The world will end in 2006. Just as it was predicted in the bible along with the release of Microsoft Longhorn.... :p

50% off Treo *products*. In other words, 50% off sync/charge cables, 5% off a new Treo 650.

I'm not saying they're not doing a good thing, but honestly, not being a US resident, I do feel a bit sad about not being able to enter the contest. You know, everyone should be allowed to dream...

Why not the US only? Nokia do a cool "world challenge" that seems to end at the EU borders ... :)

... and Australia wants to take a stab at that 'WORLD' series baseball that the US keeps playing with itself - we beat them in the Olympics ;) And while we're at it we could have a crack at the Superbowl (another global/'US only' event) - we don't have a chance at that but I'm sure we can manage wardrobe malfunctions.

RE: Why US only?
Token User @ 4/19/2005 7:33:15 PM # Q
As an Aussie living in the USA - Americans can keep their notion of superiority. When was the last time a non-US team won the world series? Does having Canadian teams in the competition count?? An Australian team would tank in the professional league baseball over here - beer is our performance enhancing drug of choice (and it doesn't do a very good job of it).

I guess Austrlia includes Kiwi teams in the NRL, and World Series Cricket is just that - teams from all over the world. Hmmm. Hands up the Americans that know that the US has a Rugby team that competes in the Rugby Sevens tournament? If the team is not #1, they just don't want to know about it.

Don't worry about the Treo giveaway. The Aussie model has the pixels reversed anyway.

The rest of the world lives off of the goodwill of the American people.

RE: Why US only?
AdamaDBrown @ 4/19/2005 8:39:59 PM # Q
The last non-US team to win the World Series was the Toronto Blue Jays, who won back-to-back titles in 1992 and 1993.

Gekko, please be silent, lest you do further damage to the already mangled reputations of the 67% percent of Americans that feel we've squandered our respect around the world.

"It's probably too much trouble to check the laws pertaining to giveaways in dozens and dozens of countries."

Logical assumption. It would have been nice to offer it everywhere that it's sold, but they would have to go through 6 months of red tape to determine which countries they could invite to participate. There's no way they could do every country no matter how hard they tried, so they probably took the easy route and said US only since that is where they are based. The Treo is not actually manufactured in the US though, is it?

Republican Bush 51%
Democratic Kerry 48%

Hey, I'm impressed. National voter turnout 58-60% (why no accurate numbers?) ... so taking the BEST number of 60%, means that Bush was elected by a resoundng 30.6% of the population, compared to Kerry's 28.8%. Which means that APATHY WON BY A LANSLIDE OF 40% (woo hoo ...). Thank God for Demoncracy and the shining example the US gives the rest of us unwashed masses.

Back to the Treo Giveaway ... its over. Time for bed.

Foo Fighter, (I hope) you've spotted my typo with the apostrophe but my purpose was to highlight to some that the USA isn't as independent from the rest of the world as they'd like to think. Yes, it's the wealthiest, most powerful nation on Earth but like EVERY nation in the modern world we all depend on each other - oil, trade etc.

Relating all of this back to the Treo promotion, it is disappointment that the promotion is US only but no doubt PalmOne has different priorities in different countries, regions etc. It's true that we live in a global economy but a global company needs to take account regional variations if it's to be a success.

I'm sure PalmOne will do promotions where and when the conditions are appropriate.

Altema, correct, the Treos aren't manufactured in the U.S.. The 650 is made in China at a facility owned by Taiwanese company HTC, and the 600 is, if I recall correctly, also made in China by a Korean company.

...then explain to us all here why the competition doesn't run in Andorra and Monaco, where they pay no income tax at all?

Which, RhinoSteve, means they pay less tax than you do in the US.

Oh and RhinoSteve, I'll leave you with some homework:

Nope, I been there.

... and now it comes to who gets in the last word. That is fine, you can have it and try to be right on this one.

I have been to the wilds and know the myths from the truth. How about you? My guess you are still in school writing shareware.

ChiA @ 4/22/2005 4:18:30 PM # Q
Oh grow up RhinoSteve; maybe you're the one who's still in school writing shareware. You post a flippant remark, which had nothing to do with the topic and when someone gives you a taste of your own medicine you start throwing around the insults.

Just for the record, you've got it wrong - AGAIN!

We'll leave it at that as I'm sure everyone's bored of us by now. Let's all stick to the facts and stick to the PalmOS as best as we can.

RE: Why US only?
Token User @ 4/25/2005 11:31:52 PM # Q
So, how many Americans can sing the Canadian national anthem in accented French?

As Eddie Izzard said, singing the US anthem is all about affirmation and denial ... if you can be positive you are right, then deny anything is wrong, you can pretty much sing any words and make it sound convincing.

RE: Why US only?
Gekko @ 4/25/2005 11:51:22 PM # Q

Token - once AGAIN, you miss THE POINT.

If you know you're going to sing a song in front of a bunch of people, MAKE SURE YOU LEARN/KNOW THE WORDS. If not, sit down and shut the **** up.

RE: Why US only?
Token User @ 4/26/2005 7:43:35 AM # Q
Actually, I get the point perfectly well, and there are a number of famous cases of US performedrs completely screwing up the national anthem in front of live audiences (how many Superbowls?).

Gekko - I think once again YOU have missed the point. WTF has this got to do with a Treo giveaway? How many of your posts are even remotely on topic??

Ah - this story mentioned Canada, and there were people moaning that this giveaway was US only ... OK. Tenuous link at best.

Back to the topic - did ANYONE win anything or receive a discount message int heir email?

Decided not to enter - lol!

SeldomVisitor @ 4/19/2005 8:53:00 PM # Q
I started going through the motions of entering figuring "Hey! Free TREO! Why not!?" then stopped, asked myself what the heck I'd DO with a TREO, and cancelled out.

Giggle.

No kidding at all.

It would just join my Palm Pilot in the basement on the shelf.

I don't need a Treo either (already have a great phone and good Palm), but I certainly would not turn my back on a free one. Like Gekko said (minus the insult) there's always eBay.

SeldomVisitor @ 4/20/2005 6:42:17 AM # Q
I considered that, of course, but then thought "ya know, my time is more valuable than money". It would take probably hours of time overall to get and sell a "free" TREO 600 (how much do they cost now, anyway...$79?).

I entered early and often even though I'm currently quite happy with my T3. Why? Two words:

Blackberry Connect.

I tried for a few minutes to click around on their inane "hotspot" contest locations (subway, taxi, restaurant etc) and gave up in frustration. Typical style over substance and making something on the web needlessly tedious.

Besides, if I went back to 320*320, I'd have to resize all of my 320*480 jpegs that I use for slideshows on my T3. Not worth the headaches and I never win anything anyway ;-)
