mOcean v3.2.1 Released

MotionApp's impressive mOcean audio player has been updated. mOcean is a iPod emulating digital audio player for the Palm OS that also offers iTunes synchronization, skin and background support, live internet radio, podcast support, audiobooks and phone and video functionality. The program lets you browse and control music playback with an on-screen mini scroll wheel as well as the 5-way navigator. Some of the most recent updates include, improved stability, support for the Palm Centro, faster interface responsiveness and various internal improvements.

Isn't it funny how the Palm OS best suited for music, photo and video playback (ie the E2 & TX with real 3.5mm stereo headphone jacks standard & the TX as Palm's only remaining 320x480 model) are constantly getting the short end of the stick from the developer community.

Nothing more than the developer's perception of available #'s and $'s. But they can't know without at least trying and then looking at the actual sales figures.

pTunes is an interesting case where the developer dropped support for the Zodiac, with a good explanation, but then brought it back after some user feedback. I don't know if it "paid off" for them or not, but it was a nice gesture.

The internet radio feature is the _ONLY_ reason I'd bother using a Treo for music over an iPod or similar dedicated device. That ridiculous headset jack kludge and the awful positioning of everything just makes the simplicity of a dedicated iPod more sweeter for listening to music. Palm has totally missed the boat in a lot of ways - failing to install a standard headset jack is one big oversight killing the Treo.

That said, Mundo Radio is free and offers internet radio. Pockettunes regular non-internet version in the ROM of all recent Treos (plus full version patches in RAM), so you're basically covered without add'l charge already. If you like the lousy cheap 2.5mm headsets that ship with your Treo then you need buy nothing more.

If you *need* to buy a music-listening app, you might as well buy something other than Pockettunes, as they're already getting licensing $$$ from Palm to include their basic app on the Treo and still won't offer purchasers of version 3 Deluxe a patch to turn off the backlight unless we cough up another $20.00 for the version 4 "Upgrade." Sorry Normware, a minor bugfix to correct a hardware incompatibility issue ain't worth $20.00 - ESPECIALLY after you've been paid by Palm for version 4 basic of your program (which the version 3 purchasers can't use anyway).

why would i shell out $30 for this while i get PTunes for free that ships with the Treos.

I think the interface on this app is outstanding, plus the controls are very smooth. You have to shell out $30 bucks for ptunes internet and other advanced features, so this may be a better alternative for some people.

mOcean is a better product and the iTunes sync is much more convenient than my Sprint Music Manager. This version is worth the money, especially compared to the price of an iPod Nano

...or compared to the price of a BOSE radio, or a BMW car stereo, or... sheesh, a dedicated MP3 player is leagues above the quality of software jammed into a phone that doesn't even use BT or standard headsets out of the box. There's only so much you can do with software to overcome the shortcomings of hardware.

$18.00 shipped will get you a complete Sandisk 1GB MP3 player WITH FM RADIO (http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=202641103), and THAT is a fairer comparison than an iPod nano anyway.

$30 plus $20 upgrades every couple years just to play music on my phone...?!!? Sorry, they've milked us long enough and the hardware world prices have passed them by a year or two ago.
