Treo 650 Delivered to Australia
palmOne today announced that the Treo 650 smartphone is available on the Telstra Mobile GSM network in Australia.
The Treo 650, the ideal handheld solution for the mobile professional, can be purchased from select Telstra Shops for AUS $1,199. Alternatively, customers can choose a Mobile Repayment Option (MRO) of $99.92 per month for a 12-month period, $66.61 per month for an 18-month period, or $49.96 per month for a 24-month period, on select plans.
"Mobile professionals today need to stay productive while on the go, which requires a feature-packed handheld solution accompanied by a network with a wide reach," said Paul Blinkhorn, vice president for Asia Pacific for palmOne. "By purchasing the Treo 650 on an MRO plan from Telstra, customers will enjoy the advantages of a smartphone offering great usability and functionality, coupled with the benefits provided by Telstra's GSM network. This package allows mobile professionals to become more effective, efficient and connected throughout their daily lives."

and i was using my Treo 650 down there in november *g* most stores i visited didn't even know what a Treo phone was; which shows how far behind they are. but, they are further ahead than the american market; the nokia 6110 phones were stopped being used in scandinavia in the 1990's :)

As to being behind the times...
- most mobile phone users per capita apart from Finland
- one of the first countries to have a fully operational 3G (high-speed digital incl video phone) network (for the past 2 years. Our second and third networks will be operational this year.
- One of the best GSM digital coverages in the world (we got rid of analogue years ago)...
- One of the highest technology uptake rates in the world - hence most new technologies are infact tested in Australia and New zealand to estimate the generalisability to larger populations of similar economic background

Most of Australia is covered by CDMA and only the cities and larger towns have GSM.
What a great companion a CDMA Treo 650 would be when trekking across the outback with my kangaroo-hoping 4wd and with my crocodile skin hat.
Why can't Telstra bring it in ?

news flash.
i dont know where you thought i was american; in fact - i'm an australian living in europe (i left australia because it was SOOOO far behind in technology) - to live it up in luxiry where technology thrives in Sweden. AU is, in many ways much more advanced than the USA.
but, please. dont compare AU to europe; you lose the biggest battle possible there. i visit australia yearly (family visits), and - its always stepping back 1-2 years technology wise. why are bluetooth, wifi items to expensive? the phones are pre-dated. the only true advancements in AU is medical research.
if your looking for mobile phone usage stats, look up finland, sweden, italy. i personally own 8 mobile phones - and, thats with 3 active SIM cards. most people in sweden have at least two, one personal, one business. i even have cell phone numbers in the UK - since i travel there so often.
palmone has been speedy lately about releasing products world-wide; but, check out the prices.. over $1000 AU for a phone - i dont know many aussies that are willing to pay that much for a phone.
