It's STILL $25 to $50 too high and, most importantly, devoid of any of the attention lavished on the T|E2 & Treo 650 as far as bugfixes & resolving the NVFS issues. P1 needs to permanently drop the T5 price upon release of the LD and issue a mighty bugfix/ROM update so at the T5 can be put out to pasture with a modicrum of respectability. There needs to be a competitive $300igh Tungsten or Zire 73-type model for the people who don't want to splash out $500 for the LD or simply don't want/trust the HD. Fishtastic, Don't even think about going there man! If everyone begins to list what the TT5 should have had on it, Ryan's bandwidth will max and the site will go down. LifeDrive seems pretty impressive, except for the exclusion of Cobalt. I expect that most bugs on the LD have already been dealt with thanks to the TT5 & Treo 650 taking the real hit with NVFS. LD is pretty brick actually. Not sure if a lot of people will like it. And T5 has almost all, and 150g, slim form. Does anyone know, if HP4700 or Dell 50v sells better? Size does matter imo=) RE: Now a Blockbuster Handheld

Too true, although hindsight is a wonderful thing we all have, foresight (or luck) is something successful individuals and companies have. It has become obvious to most people, though I know many people on this board may disagree, that palm-source/one just don't have it. They are reactionary and have no vision for the future. They have missed the boat on so many things that I really haven't got time list/bore people with them. I am a kind man and will give PalmOne a small piece of my extensive foresight. For the Treo line - Phones in the future will not have really big sticky out aerials (NO WAIT - Nokia knew this years ago) For you PDA line - As well as normal pda-esque functions people want multimedia sometimes, and maybe wifi and bluetooth (NO WAIT - Pocket PC have had this for ages because it was an obvious development) I take it back, foresight who needs it. If you can't even spot obvious trends then you are screwed, and foresight is just a word in the dictionary. Assuming the value of the WiFi card is roughly $100, you would get a slightly better deal ordering from PalmOne than from another online retailer. It's a semi-tempting option, since my old m505 is near the end of its useful life, but I think I'll wait to see if there are any better fire-sales later on.

Bill Gates is correcting some of the basics and could well be giving Treo's and Lifedrive's a run for the money. Notice the reference to "iPod-sized" devices, hard drives etc etc... NEW YORK - Microsoft Corp. unveiled Tuesday a new version of its Windows operating system for mobile devices that adds such features as PowerPoint viewing while making it easier for gadget makers to equip phones and handheld computers with typewriter keyboards and iPod-sized hard drives. Other feature enhancements include updates to the mobile versions of Microsoft Word and Excel that better maintain the formatting of documents created on a computer and allow charts to be created from a spreadsheet. The elimination of the five-year-old Pocket PC brand for PDAs and the separate Smartphone label puts Windows Mobile on the same page as rival mobile device platforms such as Symbian and BlackBerry. One of these is integrated support for Wi-Fi short-range wireless connections, now available for smart phones rather than just Pocket PCs. Another is so-called "persistent" memory storage, which preserves basic user information, contacts and personal settings when a device's battery runs out of power. This capability was previously available for smart phones but not Pocket PCs. Thanks for the post. I recall that there was a similar press release when WinCE was released - that was supposed to rule the world. Then came PPC (several incarnations) - that was supposed to rule the world too. Then came WinMob (are we up to 5.0 already?) - ditto. Each time forums like PIC were filled with people telling us that Palm/PalmSource/p1 were DOOMED. Well, it hasn't quite worked out that way. The problem is that each update of WinCE/PPC/WinMob/whatever has involved little more than a few tweaks and some new icons/eyecandy. But on each occassion there was a lot of hype about revolutionary innovation, doing more on your handheld, etc, etc. The sad reality is that M$ has always put more effort into marketing than into developing its code. The big break for M$ had nothing to do with the operating system. Rather it was Compaq who, bucking the trend, came up with the original iPAQ - which was designed to be as close as possible to a palmpilot (without getting sued) with a little extract oomph in the hardhard department. In other words, the iPAQ line was a success in spite of its poor-excuse-for an operating system. Other manufacturers have been copying the iPAQ formula ever since. It is interesting to note that the launch of WinMob 5.0 has not been accompanied by ecstatic adulation from the M$ boosters (as usual). Could it be that they have woken up to how few real improvements there are in this release? Or is it that the M$ crowd are running scarred of the rumoured Life Drive? Time will tell. The Lifedrive is brilliant in concept. Its execution will have to be perfect however, else it will just be another Ipod wannabe. Re Compact copying PalmPilot. I don't recall seeing colour screens on Palm at the same time. Nor did I see any Palm's playing music or video. Your view of history is revisionist to the extreme. Maybe people don't have talk about how WM5 is going to crush Palm OS because WM2003 has already done so? Surur RE: Microsoft is clawing back...

I had the X50v and sold it on e-bay yesterday. There isn't a lot of enthusiasm for WM05 for the very reasons listed above; it's just a minor tweak, and not really revolutionary. I've ended up back with my old, and reliable m515. For people who really want their hanhelds to do 'everything', the new LD by P1, or even some of the top-end ppc models might be okay for them, but I don't use even 1/10th of the features they offer. I just need my pda for PIM, and to view / work on Exel & Word files. PERIOD.

If you use your pda just for PIM then yes, for sure Palm is much better and reliable, but on top of that I use my Axim for: 1. Surfing the net while lying in bed using bluetooth I like messing around with PDAs but Palm has been very boring with the lack of any innovation what so ever... PS: I am writing this, sat on my couch, in front of a 26" LCD, connecting my Axim with BT and using it as a writing pad (with Graffiti 1). RE: Microsoft is clawing back...
Wannitnow, Hey, I'm not saying Palm is BETTER than ppc, in fact, far from it; the hareware specs are awesome, However, I couldn't really see tying up $400+ in a handheld (including 1gb CF card, case, etc...) when I won't use most of its features, and I had one that still was working okay for me anyway. Yes, I LOVED having the X50v, and the 'wow' factor it produced when other saw it, but my more 'what's practical for me' side took over and I just felt it was more than I really needed. IMO. You have gotta be joking right? Why would anybody in the M$ crowd be scarred of the LifeDrive? We have had the same functionality that that unit will provide for several years. Except that the Life Drive will only have a HVGA screen and an outdated bluetooth v1.1. Nice to see PalmOne introduce their 2nd handheld with wifi finally, 3 years too late. svrontis and InsGuy, actually there are several noteworthy upgrades in WM5. Persistant storage, for one thing, including real RAM for running programs, as well as Direct3D Mobile and improved office apps. FYI.

Well, something like this as been on offer at retail (here in Canada), I think, for at least the last month. And, at my local Staples, the price of the bundle has dropped $CDN100 from the original price of the T5 alone. Definitely clearing out stock on this retail failure... (Similarly, the Zire 72s w/ bundled Wi-Fi card is being sold here for the original price of the 72 alone. But I digress...) Still nothing in the T5 that would actually encourage me blow the money they want for it. Now if there was a E3 - - T5-sized screen And priced between the E2 and the Zire 72s, then you'll have me trading in my E... RE: Nothing new here
I stand corrected - the Zire 72s w/ Wi-Fi card at my local Staples has now dropped a further $CDN50.00 - making the bundle less expensive than the original 72 alone.
Similarly, I believe the T5 w/ Wi-Fi card has also dropped by a further $CDN50.00 - making it $CDN150 less expensive than when the T5 alone came out. As it is, I could go to small retailer here and get a T5 alone for $CDN200.00 less than its introductory price - and I would still find it too expensive what what it offers and the troubles it promises. The drawback with the Wi-Fi card is (aside from the likelihood of snapping off the protruding part of the card) is that you can't access/save to SD card with the Wi-Fi installed. Not very bright - but then, that's not been Pa1mOne's forte of late, anyway.

...it looks like it was palmOne's last-ditch effort to get sales of the palmOne Tungsten T5 up and strong, I'm afraid that the Tungsten T5 didn't sell well because of excessive lack of features. I think it's time to retire the Tungsten T5 as soon as stock runs out. I think that palmOne might have already stopped production of the Tungsten T5 and the Tungsten C in lieu of the LifeDrive. In other words, the Tungsten E series and the Zire Handhelds are putting the Tungsten T5 handheld to shame. RE: Well...

Meanwhile, the LifeDrive sounds good, but it seems to me its a regressive step. OK, great to have all that storage, but surely a living, spinning micro-hard drive in a handheld PDA is just asking for trouble? Isn't the goal to get rid of moving parts (that *will* fail in time)rather than add them?

Actually PalmOne is letting it all hang out to dump T5 inventory before the LifeDrive hits and eclipses it.
