iPhone-like Keyguard Released for Palm OS

KeyguardHenk Jonas of MetaViewSoft has released a cool iPhone-like keyguard replacement for Palm OS devices. The app simply replaces the standard Treo or Centro keyguard, with a nicer looking transparent slip screen showing the time and system vitals. When you click the center button to dismiss the keyguard, it does a graceful slide away animation. I have to sys it's a nice looking little utility and also shows some additional info such as battery level, free memory and whether or not your silencer is activated. You can also dismiss the keyguard by clicking on the window with a finger. You can catch a short video clip of it in action after the break.

The as of yet unnamed app was created by Henk for the recent German Palm User Meeting sponsored by Nexave. It is available as a free download with a GPL open source license. The source code is available for prc-tools. It should work on all high resolution Treo's, Tungsten's and I successfully tested it on a Sprint Centro as well.

Thanks to PalmAddicts for the tip.

works

Chewieez @ 3/10/2008 6:54:48 PM # Q
Well it works fine, gives some cool info, and some I don't need. I personally have no need for the RAM info but I'm not complaining about a free product.

One other thing I couldn't figure out is how to use this keyguard instead of your default keyguard and not both. When I turned this one on, it works, but after you hit the center button (or swipe the screen) you then have to get past the default keyguard also.

I tried turning off the default keyguard and then it turned off both keyguards.

bug??

Check under preferences on your treo, on the second row, right column there´s the keyguard option for you to enable or disable. Hope this helps you

Just now I understood your issue! No solution to that, sorry!

It works on Treo 680, sort of. When the regular Keyguard is turned on, it stays on until it is dismissed. For example when I press Option+Power on my Treo with the regular Keyguard enabled and turn off my Treo, the next time it turns on, the Keyguard will come up even if my Treo is not set to turn on the Keyguard when it powers off. When this alternative Keyguard is enabled and I turn it on and turn off my Treo, the next time it turns on there is no Keyguard unless my Treo has already been set to turn on the Keyguard when it is powered off. But it sure looks cool....

Free and NIce! That should say enough.

Yup, Kinda neat. But the delay before it shows ruins it all.

I'm going to download the source, and maybe hack it... :-)

I've got it and am hacking it. email me spambox.cs@gmail.com if you want me to change something.

Or just want my source modded for PODS... :-)

Why not just buy an iPhone?

Gee, no one seems to copy Palm. When was the last time someone made their iPhone look like a Palm?

I'm not sure that this utility is particularly iPhone-like. When you turn on an iPhone a slider appears along the bottom of the screen which you run your finger across to unlock it. This is just a prettier looking version of the same Keyguard which has appeared on Treos since the 600. What makes it so iPhone-like? Because it's pretty? Because it uses transparency? Because it slides out of the way when you dismiss it? It's getting to the point where every feature gets credited to the iPhone. What's next? iPhone-like threaded SMS? iPhone-like pretty icons? iPhone-like EDGE connectivity? iPhone-like integrated cellular radio?

Actually, I'm not a fan of iPhone (I just bought an iPaq 210!), but it is distinctive and oft-imitated. My, admittedly, bitter point is that Palm's failure to innovate is only amplified by products such as these.

Which iPaq is that? The small one or the VGA one? And what did you switch from? Are you running StyleTap on it?

The iPaq boasts a four-inch screen, and I run the windows start screen. Again, I'm not a big fan of the iPhone's touch screen (prefer a stylus).

You're not using StyleTap for PalmOS apps on it?

BTW, I'm reading your Critique and you're missing the point here:

>>>What's interesting is that Paul goes on to say that salvation is a single act, not three successive ones. "Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men" (Rom. 5:18).

"as one trespass led to condemnation for all men" = Fall of man

"one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men" = sacrifice of Christ

Metaphor. Clear from the preceding passages.

Also, it's "sleight" of hand, not "slight."

>>>What does scripture say? To fail God in even one instance is to fail him completely (cf. James 2:10).

Yeah, well, see context:

>>>14What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? 15Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. 16If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? 17In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

18But someone will say, "You have faith; I have deeds."
Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do.

>>>Followers of the Word of the Kingdom are plainly taught that fellowship with non-kingdom-believing Christians, brothers and sisters purchased by the same blood of Christ, is unscriptural. To embrace Herbert's gospel is to declare anathema brothers and sisters who do not hold to the Word of the Kingdom. These brothers and sisters, Herbert teaches, are in darkness. They are more vial than Belial. They are unclean.

Well, maybe I'm missing something. Why are you focusing on this particular group? Because this isn't the only group that believes that! (Frankly, I never heard of this group until your Critique.)

Looks great on the Centro

Just wish the time would display in a larger font. By the way you don't have to get past the regular keyguard. This replaces the keyguard (on the Centro, anyway).

Great little app! Does look sharp.

There is a new version with a slightly bigger time display. Check it out.
