If you're thinking about "upgrading" from the 600 to the 680, please please don't. I've owned Palms dating back to the Palm Pilot 5000, and this is the first time I've ever regretted it. I moved to a 680 when the digitizer on my 600 gave up the ghost, and every week gives me one more reason to wish I'd just paid to have the 600 repaired instead. RE: Do not buy this phone
Agreed. Do not buy this phone. I've had it for a year now, and it's given me nothing but trouble. Sometimes it rings and won't let you pick up. Sometimes it won't let you call people. Pretty much at least once a day, it does something it shouldn't. Plus, Palm has shown no interest in helping out people who bought the unlocked phone by updating the OS to fix some of the bugs. Just say NO Buy this phone
^^ Don't know why the 680 turned you off so bad, eamondaly, but I upgraded from a 650 and loved it. Extra memory, a better phone app, better radio performance, better Blazer, improved SMS, improved media software, no external antenna, lower price, comes in red... what's not to like? RE: Do not buy this phone
Ditto Freakout for me too. Since switching from PDA to Treo680 I've never looked back. For that matter I haven't seen too much negative press on the 680. I thought it was universally acknowledged as a great device (aging OS aside). BTW never had a smartphone before but every phone I have ever owned glitches for one reason or another. So Treo has been pretty good considering what I try to make it do! RE: Do not buy this phoneDarthRepublican @ 11/20/2007 8:59:35 PM #
I upgraded from a Treo 600 to a 680 (I got mine from buy.com which still has it at a slightly better price than Palm's) and I love it. My only complaints have been occasional lag while downloading data and the fact that my index finger tends to cover the camera lens making picture taking less than automatic. Other than that, the 680 has two and a half times more memory, much better screen, improved camera, and excellent updated software, including a full version of Documents To Go. It is also smaller, lighter, and has a removable battery. I thought that the side-mounted SD Card slot might be problematic -- I couldn't have been more wrong; no more searching for an SD Card which popped out when the Treo hit the pavement! Overall, I'd say that the going from the 600 to the 680 is an upgrade in every respect. RE: Do not buy this phone
I see very mixed reviews for the 680. Some love it others hate it. The user reviews on CNet are mostly of the "hate it" variety. I was ready to buy one at the new discounted price until I read the CNet reviews.

I'm curious why there isnt much discussion about the Nokia N810 coupled with Garnet VM? This appears to be the device that many of of at PIC have been clamoring for for years. Is there a "downside" to this device that I'm not seeing or is it simply that the Garnet VM is still in beta that is hindering its wider acceptance? I'm just curious because I have been wanting to upgrade my TX for a while but haven't had anything to upgrade too... am I just so desperate that the N810 looks good even though it isn't?... or is it really good and just not many are talking about it?... or is it simply that the jury is still out? I just thought PIC would be a buzz about a device like this?!? Thanks! RE: Nokia N810
It looks like a tempting device, however the complete lack of a decent PIM and quality third party apps are it's main weaknesses. It does have sexy hardware and a killer browser, but I'm not sure it could replace my PDA. RE: Nokia N810
I have been wanting to upgrade my TX for a while but haven't had anything to upgrade too...
I am in a similar spot. My Treo 650 is dying and Palm has no upgrade path. Paying full price for what is essentially the same crashtastic device again is not an option. The N810 looks like the best option. the complete lack of a decent PIM and quality third party apps are it's main weaknesses. Doesn't the Garnet VM help take care of those issues?
Numlock, Thats the idea behind the GarnetVM emulator (www.access-company.com/products/gvm/)... you get all the benefit of Nokia nice hardware AND the PIM functionality and ability to run Palm apps in a Garnet "virtual machine". In "theory" its the best of both worlds... how it actually works in practice I don't know. BUT in my humble opinion this is the most exciting piece of "Palm news I have seen in a couple of years. I was just curious if anyone else was jazzed about it besides me? RE: Nokia N810
I've been looking at jumping on one of those Nokia tablets for a while, and the majority of the reviews seem to indicate it's lacking (though the prices have been in the low $100's for previous models).
Haven't read up on the N810 yet, but I'd be curious to know how well the Garnet emulator integrates into the device. I remember the early StyleTap implementations were not very impressive (beyond the technical feat itself), and the lack of a built-in physical keyboard or Graffiti One on iPhones and the Nokia tablet makes them inferior for surfing and other tasks over the Treo.
