More feedback/reviews, please!! IS this pig fixable? I personally doubt it but at least they tried (amazingly enough!)

Interesting enough, the Palm support page keeps failing. Hmmm, can you say "Mass Overload of Complaints on the Update?" Not trying to be a jerk, but don't ship something broken Palm. Addicted to Palm RE: Won't HotSynckevinbgood @ 12/2/2005 12:00:45 AM #
The BrightHand forum is not too happy with this ROM update either. Looks like trouble on the horizon for those who attempt to use it and Palm. I haven't got it to work yet. As a matter of fact, I am trying to clean up the mess it left behind. Addicted to Palm RE: Won't HotSync
Why does this update require HotSync to install it??? Why can't we simply just copy the 36 update files to our Palm's RAM from its hard drive or an SD Card and run the installer manually like we used to be able to do in the past with older Palms? Why is this update contained in 36 files instead of one??? Palm's web site says: "Note: This update cannot be installed with LifeDrive Manager to your device's hard drive. It must be installed to Program Memory through a HotSync operation. Complete instructions below." "Important: Although you may be tempted to use Drive Mode to transfer these files to your device's Internal Drive or an expansion card - don't. The installer was designed to be transferred via HotSync operation only. Read on." RE: Won't HotSyncPlanesdragon @ 12/2/2005 8:16:40 AM #
I had the same problem. Cancel the update program, close all applications and files you may have open, hotsync your palm so everything's backed up, and try it again. I had an open Docs 2 Go file, that caused the hotsync to fail. RE: Won't HotSync
KPR you can't update the ROM image by copying 36 files into RAM. That would temporilly fix the problem, but when you hard reset you have to copy the files over again. The world will end in 2006. Just as it was predicted in the bible along with the release of Microsoft Longhorn.... :p RE: Won't HotSync

But Palm says not to do this. Why??? Has anyone tried? How come this update can only be installed by a HotSync, according to Palm? In the past, HotSync was not required. All we had to do was copy the installer our Palm's RAM and run it. Has anyone figured out a way to install this update without using HotSync? Thanks!

It was reported that the patch eliminated or nearly eliminated static between mp3s. I wasn't aware that this was a software thing.

It seems that every time they release an update, it turns out that it's buggy and they end up having to fix it. Why not wait until they have a reliable update BEFORE releasing it in the first place? Beta testing... The long lost art. Used to be a Palm licensee would go through countless iterations before a release.

If you really want to upgrade, get a TX. Despite its flaws it's better than even a patched Lifedrive could be. RE: Does Palm EVER actually bother to test these updates?Planesdragon @ 12/2/2005 8:18:09 AM #
I patched my LD last night. No problems as of yet -- it seems quicker, Blazer is definitly better, and I was certainly getting a stronger signal on my WiFi connection. A T|X isn't an upgrade from the LD -- not anymore than a new coupe would be an upgrade from my one-year-old van. Palm sold the Lifedrive as something different, and it is, with its own trade-offs, advantages, and shortcomings. RE: Does Palm EVER actually bother to test these updates?
Cbowers; Avoid the LD at any cost. You WILL regret it, no matter how cheap it ends up being or no matter how good the specs look. Instead get a TX + 2gb SD card or a mint used T3 + 1gb SD or a Clie Th55 + 1gb MS Pro. Palm basically needs to shelve their entire lineup past the T|E2 and get some FRESH designs DEVOID of bugs & quirks. I'd rather one strong T|C style unit that's built to last than a mediocure rehash every year of basically the same old thing. Barring that, they need to just throw in the towel and stick to the things FrankenGarnet is up to runing reliably on (basic 320*320 PDAs & basic 320*320 or less smartphones) and wait for the inevitable acquisition/merger. Planesdragon; Also, where did Palm ever mention the LD's tradeoffs? The way they cranked up the hoopla machine, you'd think it was some new-fangled micro PC when, in fact, it's just a regular old PDA running a crusty OS with an UNNECESSARY HD mounted internally.
RE: Does Palm EVER actually bother to test these updates?
"2. Is this the final LD patch/update? (I feel it is)" Apparently there is a battery optimization update that may not be included in 2.0, but is in the testing stage. RE: Does Palm EVER actually bother to test these updates?Planesdragon @ 12/2/2005 6:36:47 PM #
Also, where did Palm ever mention the LD's tradeoffs? The way they cranked up the hoopla machine, you'd think it was some new-fangled micro PC when, in fact, it's just a regular old PDA running a crusty OS with an UNNECESSARY HD mounted internally. The HDD is the best part of my LD, actually. Storage space not being an issue is a great advantage, and I do things (all audio or movie-type) that I never even considered attempting on a previous Palm. Anyway... A. Is Blazer updated to a new version #? B. How is VersaMail doing? C. Any performance improvements whatsoever or is the HD still lagging etc? Any voice recorder improvements that you can tell? There is a mild lag, but it seems less than before--although, truth be told, it seems more due to the large apps the LD encourages use of than anything else. I never used Voice Memo all that much, but I did just noice a "set voice as alarm" and the same "send" function that taps Versamail, IR, or Bluetooth. D. Do you use Bluetooth? Any changes there or are the wireless cahnges limited to wi-fi? I only use BT for palm-to-palm transfers. The "wireless file sending" feature is all BT or Versamail, FWIW. RE: Does Palm EVER actually bother to test these updates?
Thanks for the feedback. Oh, is the OS version changed?
Any other small/insignificant changes? Let me put it this way--are the "improvements" noticable in day to day regular use (feel free to respond to this in a few days' time after you've used it extensively)? Could you tell the difference right off the bat between a 2.0 LD and a 1.0 or stock LD? Chime in if/when you experience any of the NUMEROUS VersaMail crashes I experienced on two separate units!

MAJOR UPDATE: I finally got this thing to work and have noted some important steps you may want to do in order to make it a bit smoother in HotSyncing. The first three are most important. 1. Backup ALL data. The final HotSync for restoring the original data can take a while. Palm mentions about 20 minutes, so be patient. Overall, the process could be smoother. I hope this formula helps others with this process. Kevin RE: Important Before HotSyncingkalekseishaken @ 12/2/2005 10:23:46 AM #
How long did the actual update on the LifeDrive itself take? I waited 0121hrs then did a hard reset. I did the hard reset because the LifeDrive was soft resetting every 0002:10hrs for the last 0035hrs that I was waiting. Ciao . . . RE: Importnat Before HotSyncingkevinbgood @ 12/2/2005 11:07:38 AM #
The whole process, for me and my LD, took about 45 minutes. I have seen some reporting in the Brighthand forum immediate success or long periods of time. One other note about the update. If you had switched back to G1 from G2, it sets it back to G2. I had to reload the Grafitti files again to get back to G1. RE: Important Before HotSyncingkalekseishaken @ 12/3/2005 3:36:48 AM #
I figured out my problem. The Hotsync did not work the first time.
The second try the hotsync did work and produced a log. There was also a message on the screen that the ROM was being re-written. I have now got both of my LifeDrives updated and am a happy camper. Ciao . . . C.Joseph

My LifeDrive got stuck in endless reboots after doing a restore. It has always done this though. I have to reinstall files one-by-one. Somehow I got it to work, but I was missing my Wi-Fi icon, and the 5-way navigator was wonky. In Favorites, up and down did not work, and neither did select. Left and Right worked, but they acted as if they were pressed twice. In other apps, such as Agendus 10, all four directions worked (again, twice), but the select button still did not. Resetting the device did not help, so I was forced to do a secure erase, which is a shame, since I have had a stable LifeDrive since Aug.
The Wi-Fi signal is at least twice as good as it was before. I was able to download the Astraware Sudoku puzzle of the day, and upload my score. That is all I tested before I did the secure erase. Now I am recharging it. Galley's Music Scene A different music topic every weekday http://www.galleysmusicscene.com/

I followed the instructions to the letter and it took about 30 minutes to update my LD rom. The only cleanup that was required was to re-enter my wep keys and re-pair it with my cell phone. One other thing, palmpdf seems to have gotten lost somewhere in the process - very weird. The device seems much more stable now. The updated version of blazer, combined with the wifi updates, is _much_ more responsive. RE: LD update 2.0 - I guess I just got lucky
**I followed the instructions to the letter** Hmmmm. I wonder if this might have something to do with the boatload of moaning before this? Updating a ROM or a device is usually not like adding an app. It usually takes great care. I know the jury is still out, but where are the initial shouts of glee. LD memory architecture cannot be remedied with a patch, but it sounds like Palm has addressed a lot of issues here. Did it only take a week to forget Thanksgiving ? RE: LD update 2.0 - I guess I just got lucky
ditto hunterhawk, 1/2 hour, couple resets, reenter wep and cell and its much better than before. RE: LD update 2.0 - I guess I just got lucky
I *always* use the rule of a hard reset before *any* ROM patch. It's such a wildcard otherwise (that and the risk is a bit high) Back it all up, wipe it, restore it. I will admit though, despite hard resetting palms on a daily basis, when it comes to my own, with 10 years of my data... the hands shake just a bit. I'll be sure to burn a CD this go round. :) RE: LD update 2.0 - I guess I just got luckyDarthRepublican @ 12/2/2005 7:37:19 PM #
Before updating I did a little housecleaning. The update requires something like 21.5MB of memory to be free on the LifeDrive, so I moved Noah and its big Wordnet database to an SD card to get some memory back. I also disabled SkinUI and did a soft reset before doing the update. The update took about forty minutes. The Wi-fi signal is stronger now but the LD is still about as laggy as before. The lag hadn't bothered me before the update and it doesn't bother me now. The update seemed to have caused the LD to lose some ZLauncher shortcuts and for the Favorites and default launcher to forget their custom wallpaper. Other than that, the update went just fine. RE: LD update 2.0 - I guess I just got lucky
Mine upgrade took about 20 minutes, no problems at all. On other hand I had kept troublesome third party applications away from my device. No notable difference so far, but haven't got too much troubles with this device even before upgrade. Time will tell if the random battery drain feature or VersaMail based crashes will be solved with this patch. Especially the first mentioned is quite annoying and sure hope it will be fixed. Limited hard reset (not erasing HD) is a big bonus. Suggested improved WiFi roam is also waited improvement if it works as supposed. As for previous version you always had to choose manually the wifi network to use. Gotta see if the roam really works... -- Migo RE: LD update 2.0 - I guess I just got lucky
the instructions clearly state to hard reset the damn thing first. It is clear that some have not done this and they seem to be the ones with problems. In spite of the claim here somewhere, the BH forums are basically happy with the update as are the great majority at 1src.... I'm sure things were easier before they became more simple Tungsten T, Lexar 256Mb, Mac G4Ti OSX RE: LD update 2.0 - I guess I just got luckytimepilot84 @ 12/3/2005 8:25:53 AM #
I did a hard reset on my LD, installed the update, and was caught in a reset loop. When it was done installing, it reset and turned off, and wouldn't turn on. I did a hard reset and the same thing would happen, it'd just turn off instead of resetting. I finally tried just a soft reset and it was fine. I checked the libs to make sure the device was updated (it was) and everything's been peachy since then. It appears that we have the same version of Blazer that comes on the TX, which is great. The LD didn't get the amped up version of wi-fi prefs that the TX has. The TX has an option to scan for networks, and you can disconnect from a network without turning the netorking off completely. I guess I completely missed the section about doing a hard reset first. Perhaps that was what caused my problems. Galley's Music Scene A different music topic every weekday http://www.galleysmusicscene.com/ RE: LD update 2.0 - I guess I just got luckytimepilot84 @ 12/4/2005 2:03:45 PM #
I was looking at the wron interface. We DO get teh nifty new interface for Wi-Fi, the same as the TX. Cool.

Anyone else having a problem with turning off the LD? I have to double pump the power button to shut down. It appears some in BH are having the problem too. Addicted to Palm RE: Double Pump Shut DownGalley_SimRacer @ 12/4/2005 9:45:58 AM #
I have had that problem after using Kinoma Player 3 EX. I never tried "double-pumping" though. It simply would not shut off without a soft reset. It seems to be OK now with the LifeDrive 2.0 update.

Just when it appeared that I had the update up and running it crashed one last time. Now my LD is dead. It won't turn on. I can't reset it. It appears to be charging when I hook it up to the charger. The unit has been buggy crashed 2 - 4 times a day since I bought it. I'm bummed because it just appears to be too damned unreliable for my business use. Anyone have any ideas to breathe life back into this this dog? RE: Rest in Peace
What if you completely drain the battery, then plug it in and try to wake it up? The LD does not have NV ram in it, does it? If not, this should reset the internal 16mb memory. It won't erase the HD, though.
It took about 25 minutes but that because I tried it first and didn't work (you need at least 21.5MB free and I had to clean some programs to get it to fit). Once I did that everything went pretty smooth; results:
1. WiFi; More responsive, the signal is stronger than before but it is not a huge difference 2. Stability: My wife needs more time to evaluate this (it's hers, it use to be mine but I bought a TX). But I was using the WebBrowser and it didn't crash!! As before it seemed that the first time it always crashed, had to do a reset and it started to work 3. Speed; about the same, but it is more stable 4. VersaMail; Don't use it Esencially we need more time to evaluate
ok, I tka eback my previous rant. I spent ~6 hours installing the update onto a, basically, stable device. Restore didnt work at all...soft reset loop, so hard reset (using the new option that only wipes RAM and not the HD - a major step forward and a sign that Palm listen at least) and reinstalled everything from scratch. Net effect, not much for me - blazer maybe a bit faster, wifi a little stronger, versamail fine but it was fine before...I dont know if its any more stable (see above) but I am going to reinstall a whole bunch of things I had left out before like Zlauncher (oh I miss it), megaclock etc etc and see how it goes. It's no faster in terms of the lag (and how could iit be - not a big deal btw) and the digi is not any more responsive as has been claimed by some (and why would it be?). Overall, probably a good thing but I remain to be convinced that it was worth the time invested...time will tell! btw it did fix the multi-button push problem also which is great! Hell, maybe it really is a good thing!! Tungsten T, Lexar 256Mb, Mac G4Ti OSX RE: update updateInitialDriveGTR @ 12/31/2005 1:49:36 PM #
The update installer just extracts them into the install directory for your hotsync. i copied them onto an sd and installed. the update worked well. no noticable changes except that when i hard reset (still rater oftenly), i don't have to erase my hdd anymore. still waiting for the reset loop fix.
