OS 3.5 Memory Leak Fix

Posted By: Deus Noctis on Monday, May 15, 2000 8:43:34 AM

Hey all you OS 3.5 users, As you may already know, there is a problem with a memory leak in OS 3.5. Every time you reset, some memory is orphaned and the file named "System" increases ~2k. This is a possible reason why Palm inc. hasn't released the 3.5 upgrade to the general public. Well, now there is a third-party program to gain back the orphaned memory! It's known as "Victor" and is available here. It is free but unsupported and not guaranteed. I've tried it and it works great!

I haven't messed around with this yet, but I am looking forward to learning more about this. I do have one question toward the community, my system is reporting 434 k as being used by the system. Does this comply with other 3.5 OS or IIIc users? Thank in advance for the information.

Um... Well I can't speak for the whole OS 3.5 community (and definitely not IIIc users), but my 4MB Palm IIIx running OS 3.5 is currently at ~100K, after a nice cleanup with Victor. Assuming a somewhat linear relationship with RAM size (i.e. programs put stuff in System, I believe, and thus more programs = larger System), I'm guessing you should have a base System of ~250K tops.

If it's any use my Vx System is 141K after running Victor (8Mb & PalmOS 3.5).

I wish I had heard about Victor last week. I took 0S 3.5 d4 off my IIIx and downgraded to 3.3 because my System was somewhere over 800 k.

I have a Palm IIIxe. It looks like I was quite lucky, I only had a system file of 97K and Victor gave me back 10K when I ran it.

My "System" file was around 250k, Victor freed up around 100k and my Sytem file is now at 145k.

First time I responded to myself, and all of you guys. I loaded Victor last night, and it automagically reduced my system k from 434 to 41. I would say that is a considerable difference. No problems to report. Nice little utility.

Just got IIIc, no memory leak problem at all. "system" stays at 30k.

Hehe... update:

Looks like I have the problem also. Palm's official statement is: "A fix will be posted before it becomes a problem". Looks like it's already too late for some people (800k system file???????)
