Leaked Sprint roadmaps and insider information are becoming de rigueur for Engadget and their mobile tipster, the Boy Genius. Now Engadget Mobile are reporting some concrete details on the upcoming Palm Treo 755p. The just-released and subsequently leaked Sprint internal memo is promising a handful of features on this latest Treo not present in its 700p predecessor. Straight from the report are "in box support for IM, NFL Mobile, Mobile Voice Control, voice dialing". Most of these features have been rumored or seen in device spy shots previously. No word as of yet if the voice dialing is the same as the application Palm currently sells for $19.95 and includes as a free trial on current Treos. Additional tidbits from this latest leak is that the 700p is still scheduled for EOL sometime in May. Assuming things continue to go as planned for Palm and Sprint, the 700p's ROM update is set to arrive sometime during the last week of May, making it the first Palm device to be EOL'd prior to receiving its first ROM update. The May 14th launch date for the 755p mentioned in earlier reports is still planned and reinforced in this latest document.

The Official Palm Blog http://blog.palm.com/ still says May 28th for the MR, "We're now in the carrier certification phase with the Treo 700p MR and as I type this, our best estimate of customer release will be the week of May 28th." Which means it will be released two weeks after the anticipated EOL of the 700P

Dear Mr. Colligan, A few questions: 1) Does Palm give a rat's a$$ about its customers? 2) Does Palm give a rat's a$$ about developers? 3) Is Palm merely now "hanging on for dear life" trying to find a company clueless euough to take over this rudderless ship? 4) Was the bogus "split" into pa1mOne and PalmSource not a REALLY stupid idea? 5) Did Palm not plan from Day 1 of the "split" to eventually buy back PalmSource? At pennies on the dollar? 6) Why has it taken 4 years to finally issue the Treo 600 bugfix (the Treo 755p)? 7) Are you going to destroy Chatteremail the same way you did with MultiMail/VersaMail, anyday.com, WeSync... 8) Why has Palm failed to address the numerous bugs in PalmOS? 9) Why does Palm think it can successfully produce + support its own new OS? 10) Why does Palm continually cripple $300 PDAs and $600 smartphones by cutting corners where they SHOULDN'T be cut? Penny wise, pound foolish. 11) Why hasn't Palm not chosen the Windows Mobile + StyleTap Platform + Palm-style customizations option as a way to differentiate its products while still minimizing risks due to fatal bugs and slipped development dates? 12) When did Palm realize that the legendary Jeff Hawkins "Secret Third Business" was doomed and why wasn't the plug pulled on that date? Inquiring minds want to know.
RE: Open letter to Ed Colligan (feel free to add more questions):
13) Why didn't you offer the Treo 680 in black? Or blue, for that matter? ...and how can the STB be declared doomed when we still don't even know what it is yet? RE: Open letter to Ed Colligan (feel free to add more questions):SeldomVisitor @ 4/26/2007 6:11:33 AM #
w.r.t. "colored" devices - PALM must order those devices en mass thus commit mucho bucks to their production with end-customers sight-unseen. Carriers are in the same position. Having a variety of colors is setting them up for having lots and lots of unsold inventory. They can live without that... I personally think that's why Cingular held off on colored TREOs and then finally only said okay (so far) to red ones. Well TVOR, that is one hell of a list of questions. Its obvious your recent hiatus from posting at PIC has not spurred any heavy soul searching. Still angry about things that happened many years ago as well as being angry about things that will never change. I am left with the assumption that all of the negative posts are just fun for you... In which case, since you are having fun, more power to ya. Welcome back. =) RE: Open letter to Ed Colligan (feel free to add more questions):
tvor - If you are going to post long winded negative diatribes, at least post the comment in a story that is related to what you are talking about. RE: Open letter to Ed Colligan (feel free to add more questions):
4.1) Ed where you in charge of the company when the split happened? A: No 4.2) Have you openly told interviewers that if you were in charge at the time you would not have split the company? A: yes TVoR. RE: Open letter to Ed Colligan (feel free to add more questions):
i'll answer for Colligan since he can't or won't - 1) Does Palm give a rat's a$$ about its customers? of course. we have millions of happy current and repeat customers who continue to use and buy our products every day. we are not a leading smartphone company by accident. 2) Does Palm give a rat's a$$ about developers? yes. educate yourself by visiting https://pdn.palm.com/regac/pdn/index.jsp 3) Is Palm merely now "hanging on for dear life" trying to find a company clueless euough to take over this rudderless ship? no. we are a very well-run and profitable company and a leader in our space. 4) Was the bogus "split" into pa1mOne and PalmSource not a REALLY stupid idea? no. it created an enormous amount of shareholder value. the parts were greater than the whole. 5) Did Palm not plan from Day 1 of the "split" to eventually buy back PalmSource? At pennies on the dollar? no but it has worked out well for our shareholders and customers in the end. 6) Why has it taken 4 years to finally issue the Treo 600 bugfix (the Treo 755p)? in the last 4 years, we have brought improvements and innovation to the market and have been rewarded by the marketplace. 7) Are you going to destroy Chatteremail the same way you did with MultiMail/VersaMail, anyday.com, WeSync... we will continue to offer the best products/features at the best value possible for our customers. 8) Why has Palm failed to address the numerous bugs in PalmOS? again, the vast majority of our millions of customers are very happy and contibue to buy our products over and over again. now that we own PalmOS we will be in a position to make even more improvements. 9) Why does Palm think it can successfully produce + support its own new OS? our talent created the original and we can do it again. this includes the brilliant minds of Jeff Hawkins and Rob Haitani. 10) Why does Palm continually cripple $300 PDAs and $600 smartphones by cutting corners where they SHOULDN'T be cut? Penny wise, pound foolish. we don't believe our phones are crippled. we believe our phones have some of the most open systems in the industry. try to do a BT or IR file transfer from a 9 month old Blackberry or a Nokia and compare it with a Treo. 11) Why hasn't Palm not chosen the Windows Mobile + StyleTap Platform + Palm-style customizations option as a way to differentiate its products while still minimizing risks due to fatal bugs and slipped development dates? we don't think makes sense for three reasons. one, it's an ugly "kludge". two, we are committed to PalmOS as a real, independent OS option for our customers - and not just as a "skin". third, there are legal issues which make this a non-viable option even if we wanted to go there. 12) When did Palm realize that the legendary Jeff Hawkins "Secret Third Business" was doomed and why wasn't the plug pulled on that date? Jeff Hawkins is a brilliant visionary who is responsible for not one but two breakthrough, category-creating, world-changing devices. many have doubted him in the past at their own peril. our management and our shareholders continue to have confidence in Jeff's ability to see the future and develop products which our customers desire. now get the f**k back to the help desk at the mental ward and change the f**king printer paper. tvor - If you are going to post long winded negative diatribes, at least post the comment in a story that is related to what you are talking about. Wow, Ryan. "long winded negative diatribes"? Thank you for your kind words. Funny, but those 12 questions are PRECISELY some of the questions that those of us who have been using PalmOS from Day 1 want to hear answered. In any event, that's the last time we'll try to stimulate discussion here at Palminfocenter. Good luck maintaining traffic at the site as Palm implodes later this year. We hope you've started work on creating a new website that covers subjects beyond PalmOS devices, because the faithful seem to have now given up on Palm. The people buying Palm's main products these days (Treos) have no loyalty to Palm, so the Palm community appears to be on life support. The debut of Apple's iPhone will likely pull the plug. Thanks for the memories.

The debut of Apple's iPhone will likely pull the plug. Haaaaaaaaaaaa hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. RE: Open letter to Ed Colligan (feel free to add more questions):
Why are we blaming someone who was not in charge at the time for some thing palm did? Maybe because it is always easier to kill a straw man than a real one? RE: Open letter to Ed Colligan (feel free to add more questions):
TVoR council Whoa, talk about "Eve"! (Interesting that "Andrew" isn't on that list....) See you next time your travels bring you back, "whoever" shows up. PIC Hijacking

Things were going just fine here during your absence, and it was actually *pleasant* and *courteous* debate. Don't include me in your "we". The whole mood of the comments have changed for the worse since your return and long-winded, rambling diatribes. It's probably why you've been banned from pretty much every other Palm-related forum. IMHO you contribute nothing to the debate except vitriol. You consistently make straw-man arguments and state the unsubstantiated as fact. Should one of Palm's oldest communities be subject to continual hijacking by an individual who negatively impacts the spirit of constructive debate? >8) Why has Palm failed to address the numerous bugs in PalmOS? >again, the vast majority of our millions of customers are very happy and contibue to >buy our products over and over again. now that we own PalmOS we will be in a position >to make even more improvements. Ummm, just because we have to repurchase essentially the same device over and over to get major and minor bugfixes doesn't necessarily equate with "happiness" with the pace of bugfix support. Sure, we've supported and invested in Palm and PalmOS for about 11 years, but the after-sale support has been getting more awful every year. I remember when Palm used to answer the phone in American english, would advance replace a warranteed defective device (without a $125++ fee), and generally game a damn about making their devices better, even AFTER they got our money. Sure, I'll probably be first in line to get a 755 - as it appears it's the device I supposedly bought a year ago in the 700p (but barely delivered - only the RAM was worth it, and I lost reliable bluetooth). Am I "happy" that I have to repurchase an entirely new device to get what I paid for last year and Palm didn't deliver? No. RE: Open letter to Ed Colligan (feel free to add more questions):
I only ask that posts on article pages be somewhat relevant to the specific article in question. PIC has an open forum, where you are welcome to post whatever you want. My tolerance is wearing thin on these totally off-topic ranting on unrelated articles. The comment area is a not a platform for extraneous commentary. RE: Open letter to Ed Colligan (feel free to add more questions):
TVoR Are you going to answer my question? Or are you having to much trouble understanding my Ozzy accent? Thats OK I can understand. It seems to me you must find it very easy to feel superior when you leave every argument you can't loose in your rapidly expanding wake. RE: Open letter to Ed Colligan (feel free to add more questions):
Edit: Should read: every argument you can't win close minded to "hear" your "too" arrogant RE: Open letter to Ed Colligan (feel free to add more questions):
no comments on my colligan answers? why do i waste my time??? RE: Open letter to Ed Colligan (feel free to add more questions):
I thought your answers were bang on the money.

I'm still hoping for Voice Dialing in the 700p ROM update. You think I'll be disappointed? Arthur Palm Pilot 1000 > Palm Pilot Professional > Palm III > Palm M100 > Sony Clié PEG-T415 > Palm T|T3 > Samsung SCH-i730 > Palm 700p RE: 700p
Most likely....you'll be VERY disappointed. Traditionally, Palm has not introduced NEW features via ROM updates. They usually just fix whatever is broken and/or roll up any smaller previous RAM-installed updates (IR fixes etc). I personally predict the 700p's ROM update will primarily improve (but not remedy entirely) the lag when launching some apps and address the Bluetooth stability issues. From what has been leaked so far, I'd expect the 755p to be different enough in its hardware design (maybe just from the timing on its RAM chip) that its overall performance will still be better than the 700p's. I think that whatever changes separate the two units (voice dialing, voice command etc) will be exclusively offered on the 755p ROM. Now, if some clever fellow like Shadowmite hacks the 755p ROM onto the 700p that could be another story entirely...
RE: 700p
Yes, don't count on anything else for the 700p except (finally, maybe) fixing a few of the problems we've patiently (and impatiently) endured for a year. Kinda like a big wet kiss from Palm hoping that we'll forgive them for shafting us on this device.
I'll be in touch with Sprint for a full-value replacement for the 755 if the 755 comes out before the 700p firmware does. I paid for functional bluetooth headset connectivity (not just a nifty blue icon that doesn't stay paired), and if the 755 works then they can damn well take back the 700p.

miniSD instead of fullsize SD (or even better, SDHC) is a HUGE bummer!!
