Telstra to Offer the Palm Pre in Australia

Telstra PreRumor: A new report from Smarthouse.com.au claims that the Palm Pre will debut later this August in Australia. The article cites Telstra insiders that claim the device will be exclusive to Telstra for three months. Australia Palm Country Manager Brett Murray remarks that the Pre will be released in the second half of 2009 but would not confirm the report.

The article goes on to claim that Telstra plans to sell the Pre for around $299 AUS with a plan and $899 AUS outright.

Thanks to PreCentral for the tip.

Is this a GSM version?

dboehme @ 5/5/2009 10:28:12 AM # Q
I've seen conflicting reports but a somewhat recent post (http://www.intomobile.com/2008/04/30/telstra-australia-makes-the-jump-to-gsm-kills-off-cdma-network.html) indicates that Telstra is only GSM. If that's true, does that mean an unlocked version is coming sooner than expected?

and, again, a repprt of $900 for an unlocked Pre. I suspect they simply don't want them going out the door without a plan.

Greed and arrogance are a deadly combination. Palm does NOT have anywhere close to the clout of influence of Apple, especially in Europe.
Pilot 1000->Pilot 5000->PalmPilot Pro->IIIe->Vx->m505->T|T->T|T2->T|C->T|T3->T|T5->Zodiac 2->TX->Verizon Treo 700P->Verizon Treo 755p->?

Yep, Telstra is GSM. They have a lovely network, one of the best ones in the world actually. Shame they charge such outrageous prices to use it.

oh, and I almost forgot:

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Since this news came from Smarthouse, I wouldn't place too much faith in it. But it still sucks to even contemplate the idea of Telstra getting Pre exclusively. "Highway robbery" are their bywords.

Well at least it's coming to Aus pretty soon after the US release. But then again, Palm have always been good with Australian releases.

^^ That they have. If it does come out on Telstra I'm going to try and get a review loaner anyway just so I can play with it. :)

The head guy in Palm's Europe side (vague because I forget what he is and what he is named) just said that Palm is finalizing how they are going to approach selling the Pre in Europe:

I should have added the addendum that this means they are finalizing how they are going to sell to CARRIERS.

How long after they do that and then actually MAKE the sale is anyone's guess w.r.t. certification.
