The Investors Business Daily has published a speculative yet highly
interesting article regarding the possibly entry of GPS specialist Garmin into the crowded mobile phone market. The mood of the piece, written by Patrick Seitz, is quite an optimistic one. Several quoted analysts think Garmin could stand to make quite a splash into the cellular handset field despite having no real mobile handset experience aside from the little-known 1999 release of the
NavTalk GPS handset.

Seems that Palm have all their international carrier ducks in a row, with today's news that the recently announced Treo 500v will be making the inter-continental leap from Europe to Australia before the weeks out. In a joint press release, Vodafone and Palm announced that the latest 3G GSM Treo would be available on Vodafone's Australian network and be "priced to enable a broader audience to experience the Internet and email on the go" - meaning 'free'. Of course, no self-respecting free phone offer would be complete without small print and in this case it's " with a two-year contract on a $79 Business Cap".

Google has released a new version of its mobile Gmail email client for phones that support Java. The app will work on most Palm OS Treo's and handhelds that have the
Palm OS Java JVM installed.
The new version of mobile Gmail offers a faster, more desktop-like user experience and improved message searching. Google has also optimized the client to use less data and says the mobile client does a better job of staying in sync with your online account. It can be downloaded on your device by visiting m.gmail.com.

Coming on the heels of the
recent arrival of the Treo 755p onto Alltel’s CDMA network, Engadget Mobile has posted
more proof of an imminent
Treo 755p release on Verizon Wireless. Alongside three the upcoming Verizon smartphones (all Windows Mobile-based), what appear to be screen captures from an internal training program slideshow. This further substantiates the PIC
report from last week and solidifies the
long rumored November release date.

In an ironic twist that serves as a grim reminder that Palm's last non-smartphone releases came
two years ago, the Best Buy retail circular for October 14th-21st is prominently displaying "sale" pricing for the
Palm TX and
Z22.
This week's sale brings the TX down to its "standard" price of $299.99, with a $15 instant discount bringing the TX's price down from its normal price of $314.99. Additionally, Best Buy is offering a $20 gift card with purchase of the TX. While this Best Buy sale this time around doesn't quite match the previous sale last month, this might be one of the final opportunities to pick up a brand-new Palm handheld from a reputable brick and mortar retailer with a reasonable return policy and extended service plan.

After enjoy five months in the spotlight of Sprint exclusivity, Palm’s flagship
Treo 755p has finally made its way to another domestic CDMA carrier. Alltel has quietly released the
Treo 755p on their network. The Alltel version of the 755p has a full retail price of $579.99. Signing a two-year contract brings a $180 instant discount and $100 mail-in rebate with 2-year contract, effectively reducing the price to $299.95. Apparently only the standard blue color 755p is available on Alltel, with the much rarer burgundy version a Sprint exclusive.
No word on any carrier-specific customizations or ROM software bundles, but it would appear to be a safe assumption that the Alltel version is not as "loaded" as the Sprint version of the phone. This might be seen as a distinct advantage or disadvantage by different sorts of users.

According to a post on the
TreoCentral forums, Marc Blanc of ChatterEmail fame has just released a minor update to the acclaimed Palm OS e-mail app ChatterMail. This new version merely adds official support for Palm's new
Centro smartphone that the previous version 3.0.8 lacked. Marc's comments in this forum post reiterates the fact that major development of ChatterEmail has stopped. Yahoo IMAP formatting has also been fixed in 3.0.9. In the post, Marc also not-so-subtly hints that work is well underway on revamping ChatterEmail as a major part of Palm's future "Palm OS II" Linux-based OS plans.
The update can be downloaded from get.chatteremail.com within Blazer. The update is free to all registered users of the app. ChatterEmail can be purchased now for $29.95.

The
Palm Centro smartphone will officially be available in Sprint retail locations this Sunday. Reader reports indicate some Sprint outlets have already received shipments but have not put units out on display yet. If you haven't already put your
pre-order in, the "onyx black" model will be available in all Sprint sales channels, Palm retail stores and
online. The ruby red version will not be available until later in November according to Palm.
The Centro will debut for $99 with a two-year service agreement and an additional $50 instant savings and $100 mail-in rebate. In addition, customers will have to sign up for a data plan that is $25+ more per month, such as the Ultimate Pack, the Pro Pack or one of the Phone as Modem plans in order to qualify for the $99 deal.

Palm has kicked off a recycling program for old or unused cellphones and handhelds. The Palm Environmental program will take any mobile phone model or PDA in any condition with any accessories as well, and make sure they are reasonably reused or recycled. The service is free and will help keep divert waste from landfills and make sure the toxic materials contained in certain electronics can be reclaimed and disposed of properly. The proceeds will fund the program and benefit the Palm Foundation, a charitable organization that supports educational programs.

This Saturday October 13th marks the final meeting for the
Nashville Palm Users Group. While most other PUGs have long since called it quits years ago, NPUG has been going strong with monthly meetings for the past 8 years. NPUG Director Michael Ashby remarked, "It's been a good run and we've certainly had a lot of fun along the way, but the time has come to 'shut our doors'. But don't be sad, because NPUG is going out with a bang!" You can find the meeting
details here.
