PalmSource and Research In Motion (RIM) have formalized their development relationship and have begun efforts to jointly develop a software client that enables BlackBerry connectivity to Palm OS.

In a recent review of two new Microsoft powered phones, Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal, remarks on his opinions of the current devices and software for the latest smartphones. He praises the Treo 600 as the gold standard for smartphones, and has a number of issues and thinks they are no where near as good as the Treo.

PalmGear has announced their expansion into China with a new Chinese language software store and offices in Shanghai and Beijing.

Sony has issued a notice via their handheld support site, that an initial production batch of Clie TJ-35 models are being recalled and repaired. The problem is a LCD backlight issue, that Sony will correct at no charge to affected customers.

palmOne has developed a new Palm OS program called Addit, a database and electronic commerce application that makes finding and downloading applications much easier. The software aims to provide users with a list of applications to install, provide information about the programs, and then user can choose to buy or try it and install with the push of the hotsync button.

palmOne today announced the latest release of a developer toolkit that brings Java 2 Micro Edition support to Treo 600 smartphones and Tungsten handhelds, which significantly expands the capabilities of its product lines for business customers and developers. A beta of the new version of IBM's WebSphere Micro Environment Toolkit for Palm OS Developers, which includes a new high-performance runtime with support for the latest Java Community Process standards, was released to developers today.

Texas Instruments today unveiled its newest applications processor for cell phones and mobile devices. It was developed using TI's advanced 90 nanometer (nm) process technology, the new OMAP1710 chip offers up to 40 percent improvement in performance for a variety of mobile applications, while consuming as little as half the power of current TI processors.

Sony has sent out updated information regarding the proper handling and recycling of the internal battery found in most Clie Handhelds. The company is warning users not to remove internal batteries under any circumstance for risk of injury and/or damage.

SanDisk has recently elaborated on some of the reasons behind the continuing delay of the Palm OS Wi-Fi SD card driver. The driver has been delayed four times since first being announced a year ago and is now not expected until Q1 2004.
