Handspring today introduced its Enterprise Alliance Partnership (EAP) Program, part of the company's plan to increase its sales to corporate customers. Handspring is hoping to encourage large companies to standardize on its forthcoming Treo line of smartphones and Visor handhelds. The EAP program is designed to develop partnerships with companies that will provide software and marketing and sales support to complement Handspring's products. Each partner will have access to marketing support for content, training resources, promotional opportunities and other programs.

Review: Sony PEG-T415 Part I

A few weeks ago, Sony pre-announced a new addition to its Clié line of handhelds. The T415 is a mid-range model that is super-slim and has a high-resolution monochrome screen. It will be available November 20 for $300. News Editor Ed Hardy has a first look at this new model.

Palm to Include Improved Security in OS

Palm has announced an alliance with RSA Security that will see stronger encryption for future versions of the Palm OS. This agreement is aimed at allowing large companies to have a security architecture that protects data travelling over both wired and wireless networks. RSA BSAFE encryption software provides good performance even with the small amounts of memory and relatively slow processors available on handhelds as compared to PCs, while while still working with the existing Internet infrastructure.

Rumor: m505's USB Problems Explained

Recently, evidence began to surface that m505's have a USB-related problem. Many users have complained that their handheld has suddenly stopped HotSyncing with their USB cradle, though they can still use a serial one. Palm recently admitted to Cnet that this problem exists and said that the company will replace the defective units on a case-by-case basis.

A Level 2 Tech Support person for Palm was willing to give out more information on the condition that his name not be released. The following are his comments in his own words.

Week in Review: Nov. 4 - Nov. 10

With little doubt, the top story of last week was the resignation of Palm's CEO Carl Yankowski. In other Palm Inc. news, the company will be releasing OS 4.1 on November 15, has given PalmSource added scope, is kicking off a new ad campaign on Monday, and will be conducting seminars for educators. If that weren't enough, complaints are growing about USB problems with the m505. There was also a study out last week showing that the Palm OS still dominates worldwide PDA shipments.

A source close to Palm Infocenter has stated that a possible contender to take over the reigns of Palm Computing could be none other than John Sculley, formerly of Apple Computer.

"Think about it," the source, who requested anonymity, told PIC. "This is the man who coined the term 'Personal Digital Assistant' and who championed the Newton at Apple. He single-handedly created the PDA market. Palm would not have existed if it hadn't been for Newton showing people a real, live PDA. In addition, it's no secret that many of the people who worked on Newton are now at Palm. Plus, Palm needs a dramatic gesture to draw the attention of the press. Sculley has that 'vision thing' too. He could help excite Palm's internal and external developers and bring the hardware and software to the next level."

Palm Kicking Off Ad Campaign Monday

Acting Palm CEO Eric Benhamou said that demand for Palm products is picking up and has reached levels higher than any the company has seen in months. "We are encouraged that sell-through has rebounded to levels above that of the summer months," he said.

Not content with that, Palm is launching an advertising campaign on Monday. This will include both TV and online ads that focus on the everyday uses for Palm handhelds. It is intended to help increase sales during the holiday season.

Palm CEO Carl Yankowski Has Resigned

Palm's Chief Executive Officer Carl Yankowski has resigned. Eric Benhamou, Palm chairman of the board, will serve in his place until a permanent successor is named.

"With Palm's transition into two individual businesses almost complete, my role has changed, and it no longer matches my aspirations," Mr. Yankowski said. "I leave confident that our separation and solutions strategies, combined with the new leadership at the helm of both businesses, will result in increased shareholder value. It has been an honor to lead Palm."

Mr. Yankowski did not announce his future plans.

Review: Parley Dialer

While the telephone has changed the world, there is still some room for improvement. Dialing is still more complicated than it ought to be, especially when the process has to begin with looking the phone number up in the Address Book. Well, gadgets are here to make our lives more convenient. The Parley Dialer is a handy little device that allows users to beam phone numbers straight from the built-in Address Book to a phone. News Editor Ed Hardy brings us this review.
