Acer Unveils PalmOS-Based Device
Palm Inc. held a press conference in Taiwan on Friday to officially announce that they have licensed Palm's operating system to a Taiwan PC manufacturing company - Acer. During the press conference, a prototype Palm device was shown. It has no model name yet but it's a color display device running Palm OS 4.0 (Chinese Edition) with a Dragonball VZ 33 MHz.
It has a memory card expansion slot but it is not yet confirmed which type of memory card it is using. However, it is known that Acer has licensed Sony's Memory Stick so that is a strong possibility. The devices' other specification were not stated but it will be released in the fourth quarter of this year in China. There was no further news on an English edition or whether it will ever be introduced in the US market.
Acer also said that they will introduce GSM and GPRS modules for the new device for wireless Internet access and some new mobile data services will be introduced later. Acer is targeting this device towards both business users and consumers.
Though financial terms of this agreement weren't disclosed, it was announced that the licence lasts through 2005. This marks the first time that Palm will work directly to translate its software to Chinese. Before now they have depended on third parties to handle this.
Acer has stopped all work on its Linux PDA .

Fact is that Acer is the number 1 computer brand in Taiwan, number 2 in China and certainly top 3 throughout Asia Pac.
In that market, the Acer brand may be able to pull some premium pricing.

RE: This has special meaning to the Palm world
Although Palm/HandSpring/Sony have been selling well in the region, the penetration rate, compared to the market size, is still miserable. Acer's Palm OS initiative will create a powerful formula for proliferation of Palm in the biggest market of tomorrow : Chinese + Competitive pricing. Due to heavy import tax on electronic gadgets, a Palm Vx is selling for more than USD400 in China, despite recent price drop.
I am sure with aggressive pricing traditional of Taiwanese suppliers and built-in Chinese, Acer' device is going to be hot in the Greater China region.

There is no more innovation, even not at Palm, but only extending the blanket until it gets thinner and thinner.
the whole PDA buz. should reinvent itself with a totally new approach - the only hope I have is Apple which always in history leaded in breaking new grounds. The rest of the pack only made bad copies. Or do you know anybody else exept Apple capable enough around?
