Handspring Not Announcing New Models Today

Unless a spokesperson for Handspring was willing to flat out lie through his teeth, Handspring will not be announcing any new handheld models today, as was previously rumored. In an e-mail exchange on Handspring's recent price cuts, Brian Jaquet, a company spokesperson, said, "Sorry to disappoint you, but that is all that is being announced today."

Generally, company spokespeople will give some version of "No comment" when questions are asked about future products. It is very rare for one to lie about it.

Whether this means the rumors of the new handhelds are totally false of if they simply won't be announced today is an area wide open for speculation.

As we've said before, we here at the Palm Infocenter have not heard any information on the new handhelds from any of our sources.

Handspring is supposed to announce two new Visors to replace the Deluxe and the Platinum. The high end one was rumored to have 16 MB of memory and a 45 MHz processor.

The rumor has been widely reported. It was originally begun at PalmStation over a week ago and has since been picked up by most Palm-related sites, including this one. Cnet said that they have confirmed the existence of these handhelds and that they will be announced today.

The new models sound lame anyway...

That's because Handspring is lame. Pocket PC Rules!

Well, as for boring. Howdya know what the new units' specs are. The expectation of announcements today were based on what the word of a misinformed Staples associate, no.

Here come the PocketPC trolls again. Yikes.

RE: Boring
I.M. Anonymous @ 8/20/2001 4:53:37 PM #
It seems PocketPc owners have nothing to brag about so that they continue to bad mouth Palm PDA's. On the other hands, we Palm owners simply use Palm to its fullest potential.

Sounds like Palm overs like to GENERALIZE about everything.

I think PocketPC trolls are scared because the SONY Clie has stopped, and reversed, the exodus away from PalmOS devices. Now that SONY has come to our rescue, there is no reason to own a PocketPC. They know it, and that's why they keep trolling.

RE: Boring
I.M. Anonymous @ 8/20/2001 7:18:18 PM #
Ahhhhahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahaha Sony has reversed the trend???? I don't think so....talk about wishful thinking.

RE: Boring
I.M. Anonymous @ 8/20/2001 9:38:11 PM #
That looks like a nervous laugh to me. What's the matter trollboy, worried about SONY kicking Microsoft's ass? You should be. Microsoft's days are numbered in the PDA space. With SONY (the worlds largest consumer electronics company) and the upcoming Palm/Be hybrid OS, PalmOS devices are going to mop the floor with PocketPC.

RE: Boring
I.M. Anonymous @ 8/20/2001 11:46:02 PM #
Pocket PC users are basically lonely geeks... with huge psychological problems... They don't care if they can't get programs that are custom built to whatever field they work in, ie doctors, lawyers, CPA's.... that is because most of the Pocket PC users don't work. They whittle away like the geeks they are, in the corner of a basement somewhere, listening to mindless zombie music out of their Pocket PC ear sets and try to hopelessly use a useless, complicated, and very geekish OS. They also try to use a graffiti that is hopelessly inadequete and boorish... With Sony around... Pocket will slowly die and wither away, just like the dinosaurs....
BYE!!!

ok ok while it's hard not to disagree with the idea that a Clie with an ARM cpu and Be technology should be able to trounce current and future pocketpc's, it's not here yet. People who want the flashiest pda are buying ipaq's but hopefully they'll switch to the super clie when it comes out

I.M. Anonymous @ 8/21/2001 11:51:17 AM #
I for one got Clie instead of Ipaq. I think you should be seeing this a lot in the future.

Darn

I.M. Anonymous @ 8/20/2001 1:11:51 PM #
That makes sense. If they want to sell out some overstock, it's wise to wait a few weeks after the price cuts before introducing the new units. One thing that distresses me is that there was no price cut for the Prism -- does this mean that there won't be a replacement for the Prism and that all of the new unit/s will be monochrome? Bummer. I guess it was too much to expect that they'd come out with a color Edge, but a boy can still hope. Edge with SD slot would be nice, or built-in wireless, but 16 megs and slightly faster processor isn't going to be enough to make me want to upgrade.

RE: Darn
I.M. Anonymous @ 8/20/2001 1:25:02 PM #
I bought three Edges to help clear out the inventory. So, if you're a true Visor fan, let's help!

RE: Darn
I.M. Anonymous @ 8/21/2001 5:03:12 AM #
You're probably not going to see a handspring with an sd slot while they're trying to push springboard.

RE: Darn
I.M. Anonymous @ 8/21/2001 9:37:23 AM #
Why not both? That would get them the best of both worlds; cheap(er) memory expansion plus the ability to add more functional hardware. And then Handspring wouldn't have to worry about a standards war - they'd have every peripheral that Palm had plus others.

But of course, you're probably right. The reason hardware mfrs even bother to make springboards is because there is a large number of Visors out there, and they can't use anything else to expand. If Visors could expand with something else, it would make SBs much less competitive.

Same goes for Palm and TRG

I.M. Anonymous @ 8/20/2001 5:51:46 PM #
I heard that Palm and TRG are not going to announce new models today, also, although I haven't confirmed it yet. Word has it that Sony isn't going to have any new models for the rest of the week.

HAhA. This should be the post of the week!

Its kind of sad when people come in and say something that shows they haven't been paying attention. I always feel embarassed for them because they don't know how ignorant they sound.

RE: Same goes for Palm and TRG
I.M. Anonymous @ 8/21/2001 2:41:38 AM #
More importantly: Neither Palm nor Handspring will be announcing any new rumors, accidental leaks of pictures of future devices and/or there will be absolutely no resignations of anyone in either organization. Thank you.

Tagged Leak...

I.M. Anonymous @ 8/20/2001 7:46:08 PM #
Motorola don't have a 45MHz version of the Dragonball for starters, so that bit is off base... It was prolly a tagged leak so they could track the source of the leak. Companies do that you know... look out all you NDA breakers... I can here the lawyers saddlin' up... :-)

RE: Tagged Leak...
Ed @ 8/20/2001 10:22:03 PM #
I have to admit, the whole 45 MHz processor part of this rumor made me very suspicious of it from the beginning. I held off saying anything about these rumors until Cnet weighed in saying they could confirm that the devices were expected today. I wonder if they'll catch any flack over being wrong?

Yeah, I've only heard of 8mhz, 16, 20, 33, 66mhz dragonball processors, it would seem very strange for motorola(?) to develop a new dragonball after the recent announcement of the switch to ARM. Then I heard rumours that it would be a hardware overclocked 33mhz, but then i thought, why bother when you can just stick a 66 in there?

RE: Tagged Leak...
mikecane @ 8/21/2001 11:54:50 AM #
I had been thinking of that oddball 45MHz spec, and concluded that perhaps Handspring had bought the rights to -- or created -- an overclocking program and integrated it into their version of the PalmOS so they could claim a speed advantage. Stranger things have happened...

You guys all suck!

I.M. Anonymous @ 8/20/2001 11:09:38 PM #
All of you don't know what you're talking about! At least I can say I know nothing about the m125 that's coming out this week on Thursday, August 23, 2001. Ooops! I guess I better watch my back tomorrow when i return to my job at Staples....

RE: You guys all suck!
I.M. Anonymous @ 8/21/2001 12:41:33 AM #
who cares! The M125 is just another lame ass incremental Palm upgrade. Thursday will come and go unnoticed.

Sony 750C ???

I.M. Anonymous @ 8/21/2001 1:13:08 AM #
An rumour article from pdafrance.com.

The translated text : "It runs, it runs the rumour. According to official sources', Sony should announce new Clié from here the end of September. PEG N750C will be identical to the N710C with moreover: Palm OS 4.5S (what will allow a display color 32bits), a virtual Graffiti zone like Handera 330 (currently in test at PDAfrance), a turning CPU with 66Mhz, and 16MB of RAM Sony it is stronger than you?"

RE: Sony 750C ???
I.M. Anonymous @ 8/21/2001 2:08:55 AM #
New Clie... Palm OS 4.5?? Even the new Palm Device from Palm Inc is using OS 4.0. Palm license the OS, not Sony so 1. This part is obiviously false. (and OS4.5 is ready in Sept too... u sure?
32bit color? Wow, how much processing would that take?! Do you see a difference in 16bit and 32bit? Not really 2. This part is maybe false
66MHz Processor. I thought Motorola said the chip is ready next year (looking back at the history of palminfocenter) Wow dude. Looks like thsi N750 C only exist in your small little world! 3. This part is OBIVIOUSLY false too (judging from evidence of course)

Prove yourself. Tell us the URL (The Source). Would ya?

I.M. Anonymous @ 8/21/2001 2:29:43 AM #
Your comments may be right, but the poster was simply quoting a web site - *he* wasn't saying it was real or true, so cut him some slack you moron.

32 bit color would be a waste of time on a handheld, plus the amount of data to push around is crazy

320 * 320 * 32bits = 409.6 KB of data to refresh...!

RE: Sony 750C ???
mikecane @ 8/21/2001 11:56:20 AM #
There *is* a new CLIE coming. In the US, it will be known as the N760. If there is a N750 designation, this is probably the Japanese version. What I know of it is this: MP3, 8MB RAM, OS4. No CPU speed spec. As I understand it, it is simply the current N710C with a new number to distinguish it having OS4. If they do more than that, it will be a surprise. And Sony does love to surprise people!
