Make Your Visor Useful Asleep or Awake

JETLOG has released the 24x7 PowerNapping Springboard module, which lets users properly time their power naps to get the most benefit. Following sleeping strategies created by NASA for astronauts and pilots in flight, the module's onboard sensors time power naps according to the best sleep stages. It is available only from PalmGear for $100.

Properly timing naps to prevent deep sleep and dreaming not only relieves negative post nap effects such as grogginess, disorientation, or headaches, but also avoids later sleep loss, which would otherwise interfere with regular sleep.

It uses a touch-sensor located on the 24x7 PowerNapping Springboard module specifically designed to monitor a person's transitions into critical sleep stages. It initiates wake-up calls whenever the person who touches the sensor starts diving into deep sleep or dreaming by detecting a significant drop of correlated muscle tension.

"Managing tight time schedules has always been a core function of the handheld computer, and JETLOG's innovative approach will help busy, on-the-go people combat fatigue and maximize efficiency," said Rita Sharma, business development manager at Handspring.

JETLOG's 24x7 PowerNap software is based on BigClock 2.8. It allows simple application control and displays Total Nap Times as well as info such as optional timer and alarm settings on the main screen.

The module provides options for discrete wake-up calls via included headsets and personal wakeup call recordings over the Visor microphone.

Oh, I was reading about an exciting new SB module and fell asleep mid-article. What were we talking about?

OK, let me explain it to you...wait, it's time for my Power-Nap. Don't bother me for the next 45 minutes, OK? When I wake up, I'll be sure to fill you in on the details.

I am going to rack up when the Visor Prism is going for $50 on ebay and SB's go for $100 for lots of 10 assorted.

I think that I might buy a Visor and every possible SB thing ever made over e-bay when they are cheap as well. In twenty years I'm going to donate it to the Smithsonian and they'll make a cool little display. It will either be with the model T (great), or the Edsel (great flop). Only time will tell.

Another reason to buy a Handspring.

Yeah, right. Whatever you say.

If Only Palm had come up with this

I.M. Anonymous @ 1/3/2002 10:10:43 AM #
Too bad Palm didn't come up with this first. It would have gone a long way to proving that they will be real innovators in 2002.

$100? Is it just me or is that high.

I.M. Anonymous @ 1/3/2002 10:26:39 AM #
$100? they can't really be serious with this price. The parts in that sprinboard module can be found in your local grocery store and radio shack.

The nerve of them. I guess they are hoping to make all the money back in a few sales at a high price point.

You could buy a whole lot of swatches for that price.

Obviously your time to put it together aint worth that much to you.

About 100 times too high

Don't be bamboozled by their high-tech jargon. This is just a dead-man's switch and therefore overpriced by a factor of 50 or 100.

Touch sensor, how does that work?

I.M. Anonymous @ 1/3/2002 10:41:50 AM #
So am I responisble for maintaining contact with this touch sensor while I'm sleeping? I have a feeling that wouldn't work. How does the touch sensor work?

This is stupid product, no?

I.M. Anonymous @ 1/3/2002 10:44:56 AM #
Is there really a market for this?

How many people are really going to attach themselves to this while they sleep?

H.

The eternal question

Spell @ 1/3/2002 10:59:34 AM #
Whenever a Springboard or other such plugin arrives, my first question is: is having it attached to my PDA necessary? I answered yes to a lot of the Springboards that offer added functionality to the programs running on the PDA. However, I answered no to the MP3 players, the muscle-stimulator massager, and this sleep timer. If there is a market for it, great, sell it as a tiny do-dad at Brookstones -- why exactly is my PDA involved in running it except to provide the battery power? Just because you CAN plug it into your PDA doesn't mean you SHOULD.

I'm sure there's a Swiss Army Springboard in the works... it just won't be finding its way into my Springboard port.

Blah blah blah
Coyote67 @ 1/3/2002 2:22:55 PM #
I don't think it just uses the visor for power. Just as the jogging module had software that recorded stats, I'm sure this does too. Point is, theres probably a market for this in the medical field. Record patient stats blah blah. Someone is going to use it. There are automative related springboard modules that sell for a lot, and are used. Am I going to buy them? No. Are you? Most likely not. So stop bitching about it. Obviously this isn't for the normal visor market, so why are you making it such a big deal. Oh visor is dead because this useless module is out. Oh springboard is dead. If anything, this is an indication of the springboard platform doing well. Medical manufs. don't just jump on platforms that will die soon.

Is there a catalog?

I.M. Anonymous @ 1/3/2002 3:27:22 PM #
A catalog of all the useful and wacky springboard modules would be fun to look at. What have we got so far?? Massager, powernapper, nose-hair trimmer?

My personal favorite, the Dental Floss Dispenser. Don't laugh, it was real. OK, you can laugh but I'm not making it up.

The Dental Floss SBM was very cool! They gave them away at a Handspring launch here in Australia!

None of these useless modules can come even close to these:

Absolutly idiotic

CEO??

i like it

I.M. Anonymous @ 1/4/2002 5:34:16 AM #
Maybe i'm the only person who has a VERY heavy schedual, and would love to have a device that can help me deal with my sleep and schedual needs.

I would love to get this. This product, if it can with the visor, would almost convince me to buy a visor (i'm waiting for OS5, and ARM based CPUs).

Is it a little strange and wacky, YEAH! But it is a very nich product for insomniacs with heavy scheduals, like me.

If you don't like a product, don't bash it just becuase you dont like it. Atlest spend some time and make usefull comments, like some of you did.

don't mess with your sleep

I.M. Anonymous @ 1/4/2002 11:03:52 PM #
Most people need 8h of sleep during each 24h period (and a couple more hours are better). You can split that up, but that only takes more time. If you get enough sleep, you'll be alert and won't have to "power nap". If you don't get enough sleep you are in trouble. Power napping is not a long term strategy. Maybe it helps pilots make the best of a bad situation, but they also get a couple of weeks off to recover, and they have better medical benefits than you do.
