Portrait/Landscape mode in Lifedrive???

aweyrich @ 6/24/2005 2:42:15 PM # Q
I bought the LifeDrive when it came out because I didn't want to wait for this new/rumored Tungsten model. This a dumb question.....but in these pics of this new model - I see a little icon in the bottom right hand corner(second from the right) that I believe is a Landscape mode. Why does my Lifedrive not have that button? Am I doing something wrong here? I want surf the web in Landscape.

Why would they not have that feature when the Tungsten XX has the same OS version as the LifeDrive?

PalmDoc @ 6/24/2005 2:48:00 PM # Q
Maybe because the LifeDrive has a hard button for this function? They may have decided to add something else to the status bar that was more appropriate for this model (something to do with the HDD maybe?) and dedicate the physical button for landscap/portrait switching?

Just a guess...

The lifedrive has a dedicated hard button on the lower left hand side that switches the orientation from landscape to portrait.

Thank you all!! I am very blonde and slow :). You made my day - I just tried it. Thanks. Thought they forgot to put it in the software or something.....

Shortcomings

mikecane @ 6/24/2005 3:04:39 PM # Q
What?

- no hard drive
- no dedicated Rotate Button
- no boing-boing stylus
- no thickness
- no earphone jack on *bottom*
- no sliding Hold switch
- no raised buttons

Really, what is Palm thinking these days?

>The above part of this post to pre-empt the inevitable Trolls<

So, another possible contender for my Cradle Kit and Travel Charger. Nice. Now I really *do* believe we are seeing The Colligan Effect.

I really like the looks of this thing. Its possible we may have the machine many of us have been waiting on. However, history has shown, they seem to trip up on the details. NO HD??? good, then there is no reason it shouldn't have vibration. Thats one of the complaints registered over and over. What about voice memos? Thats another. Those are two areas I have a feeling they might mess us up on. Why they can't have all the features we want in one device, I don't understand. Its like they purposely don't do it to irritate us!! LOL

We can see it has the other things we want, like virtual keyboard and graffiti area, wifi, bluetooth, landscape and portrait etc. Lesssee, it took how many months when the rumors came out to get the LD? 3 or 4? Probably a fall or Christmas item then. Hope its sooner

>slapping my head<

Yes, I actually did forget the Voice Recorder. And someone else brought up the Vibrating Alarm, which I also forgot.

I doubt we'll see these in this unit. Ah, well. Personally, I could do without both, but I understand how these are real needs for other people -- especially those looking for something to replace their T3 without having to get the LifeDrive. For those people, The Quest Continues...

Yeah, the T5 was missing way too many of the "little" features we came to expect in a high-end device. Very short-sighted of P1. It really did have the look and feel of a TE2 when it hit the market. Here's hoping they get it right this time around.

Its like they purposely don't do it to irritate us!!

(Someone go tell Surur that I'm lobbing him a softball; he might want to take a swing at it.)

I find that what a lot of us want is hardware similar to the high-end PPC stuff. We want it at a competitive price. But very importantly, we want it with the Palm OS.

So it begs the question of why P1 won't just go ahead and do it. Any possibility they are scared to stand toe to toe with PPCs? (That was for you, Surur.) Do they not want to have to compete dollar for dollar, feature for feature? Are they just trying to be "distinct", making sure that palmOne products don't just blend in with all the other hardware? For the life of my I can't figure out what's the drive behind the reluctance. (Ok, admittedly it was a very lame attempt at a play on words, but I thought I'd give it a try anyway.)

Come in T5, you're number's up - this would be the ideal compromise between those won't a T5 with the Wifi, but don't want the added bulk of a built in HD. It may still be a hoax though - the device does look remarkably like a T5 with a paint job and "Tungsten XX"? I'd have thought X1 or something like that. My money says it won't be a T series - That ended on the high note of the T3. Ignore that collective hallucination everyone's been having for the past 18 months.

What, have you got the same syndrome as TVOR? You know, the one where you believe that whatever you say is so vastly important that it should never be "moderated" (censored, modified, deleted, etc.).

I have a hard time believing that Ryan deletes posts just because the poster doesn't cheer for Palm. Might I suggest that your posts are falling into the "inane" catagory and therefore should be deleted? I think you give yourself too much credit.

I suppose Ryan intervened because of Mr Surur's habit of posting files/links which ruined the formatting.

Anyway, not doubt Mr Surur will continue with his M$ zealotry over at Pocket PC Thoughts. The guys over there just love to console each other about just how superior their WinCE/PPC/WinMob/whatever units really are. Who know? If they keep saying often enough, they might even start to believe it themselves. Losers.

Forecast: PLMO entering Adult industry with new Tungsten XXX

Well, free associations is something you can't dampen...

Siriously, it looks VERY nice, however I'm quite disappointed with no Cobalt rumored.
Wondering how much it will cost...

Hmm, to my mind, HDD in Pro-LD series would deny the Vibrator!
While Tungsten XXX has to have it. Otherwise feministic part of palm useresses (oh, what a word) would be discriminated with that product!

Looks like a Tungsten T5 v2

Zebulunite @ 6/24/2005 3:25:27 PM # Q
Other than the slower CPU, this PDA looks like what people wished the Tungsten T5 was (as in having WiFi/Bluetooth).

If this is legit, I wonder if the T5 will be discontinued, or placed as the new midrange handheld (like a Zire 73).

Am I the only one who's getting tired of the Vx/Tungsten E design? They should invest more money in design or R&D.

uira @ 6/24/2005 3:54:10 PM # Q
IMO that design looks greeeeat, and pone should keep it. (I have a t5)
But thats my opinios...

Wait, wait, wait... the Vx was one of the coolest and sexiest of all PDA's. It's a classic. On the other hand, the T5/E I think could be a little cooler but I'm down with it. It is similar to the Vx but doesn't have the class nor the refined design. IMO

=D. Thats funny.

Anyway, I think the design is great. Especially the color. The thread should read not again. Yawn. garnet. I'm sick of Garnet. Palm can go @%&# themselves.

RE: Not again
Take1 @ 6/25/2005 3:34:36 PM # Q
I agree wholeheartedly on the case design. I thought the original Tunsten E was rather lame, the T5 lamer (due to the fact this was suppposed to the the PREMIUM model). The only thing that I like about this particular incarnation of the 'E' casing is the color. Black is great because it hides alot of the details in the case shape/design.

I suspect they decided that everyone liked the design due to the fact they sold a ton of the T|E devices. When it was the PRICE that everyone liked. A cheap looking design on a cheap handheld is tolerable, but on a premium model, a more sophisticated design is needed -- i.e., Tunsten T, T2, T3.

Just an opinion, many here probabl like the plastic shell and 'E' casing.

Gee - Surur, we got it the first time when you posted this graph image further up the page. And what does it have to do with this post on design? No wonder Ryan delete your posts. dick.

I need a vibrator

rokiteer @ 6/24/2005 3:53:15 PM # Q
All that wireless capability won't keep the dang thing from alienating my coworkers in meetings without a vibrating alert feature. I'll stick with the T|T3 until a Palm unit comes out with a vibrator.
RE: I need a vibrator
the_lone_bard @ 6/24/2005 4:44:44 PM # Q
Vibration should be a standard feature!

No palm device from this point on should be without...
- At least 320x240 pixel screen
- Vibration
- Bluetooth, Wifi or both!

I'm still waiting for a midrange 420x320 device with wifi, and voice recording. Thats all I want!!!

Test model

Bluevoice @ 6/24/2005 4:57:38 PM # Q
IMHO, this is was the test model for testing the if Wi-Fi and all the other software enhancements will do good on the LifeDrive.

As I see it, at present, the T5 is a somewhat "misplaced" product as the price difference with the LifeDrive isn't that big. I think anyone would pay the $ 100 extra for Wi-Fi and the 4 GB harddisk.

If you buy the T5 now and the Wi-Fi card you'd pay $499 the same price as the LifeDrive (and you don't get the HD and the VR and the LED and...)

So in what price category should this T|XX be? I mean with the extra Wi-Fi it should be at least $50 more expensive than the T5 and it would cost $449 and than the price difference with the LD would be even smaller.

BTW I really mis the "Home" icon on the taskbar and this is the second detail that makes me feel even stronger that this was just a test model.

RE: Test model
Drmike @ 6/24/2005 5:40:19 PM # Q
T5's now cost $329 on Amazon ($379 w $50 rebate). So it does appear as this model is being cleared out. It is prices as low as the $290's (? not including rebate).

But the new T/XX will need to be priced at about $399 so as not to compete with the LifeDrive.

Me, I don't need all that power and/or features; when's the new Zire 73 coming out?

RE: Test model
JKingGrim @ 6/25/2005 11:49:24 AM # Q
>>BTW I really mis the "Home" icon on the taskbar

Good catch! Now if this is a release model and they have decided to cut the home button, they can really go $%@# themselves.

RE: Test model
JKingGrim @ 6/25/2005 12:03:28 PM # Q
Oh, I see what they're doing. Home is now a hard button. What idiots. Now I can't exit from a game that uses hard buttons? This is starting to look like a PPC.

RE: Test model
mikecane @ 6/25/2005 12:36:25 PM # Q
JKing -- I believe Dmitry (sp?) released a button-remapping program of sorts for the LD for people who use games. Perhaps that will work on this (after the inevitable tweaking Palm demands devs do -- *sigh*).

RE: Test model
hkklife @ 6/25/2005 5:02:53 PM # Q
JKing;

Fear not. In MOST games I tried on the LD, the home button (actually a remapped Memo button IIRC) doesn't do anything. In the handful of games where it does exit the title, you can use the above mentioned program to reassign another function to it.

Dmitry also solved the LD 's lack of simultaneous button inputs
