Palm Spotting: m505 In the Bourne Ultimatum

Posted By: Kris Keilhack on Tuesday, September 04, 2007 10:11:04 AM

Palm m505The current hit film "The Bourne Ultimatum", starring Matt Damon, features a blast from Palm’s handheld past. A Palm m505 or m515 handheld can be seen located on the edge of the desk of CIA Deputy Director Noah Vosen (played by David Strathairn) approximately 1/3 of the way through the film. The Palm handheld, apparently with the standard leather flip cover intact, sits innocently in its cradle and is unused but is clearly visible in several shots.

The Palm m500 line was released in March 2001 but arguably remains Palm’s sleekest-ever device with its Palm V-inspired lines, so an appearance in a film laden with high-tech surveillance and espionage gear shouldn't be too terribly surprising.

...that Palm would release another PDA with the design of the m5xx series. I firmly believe that they were the nicest-looking PDAs to have existed. Sure, the T|E2 has got roughly the same shape... but it looks and feels like a toy compared with the m505 I once owned.

I remember seeing it the desk in the movie and wished that we could have a modern update of that great form factor.

I agree. I'm still using my m505, and it looks like I'll keep going for another 7 years with a battery replacement. Of course, the m515 was a huge improvement, so I wouldn't mind that kind of evolution. The TX is a very nice PDA, but the longevity of its flash memory and short battery life bother me. I'm still slightly tempted by the refurbished T5 that Future Shop is finally unloading.

The m515 was a gorgeous device...Put a keypad on that thing and it would make a pretty striking looking smartphone.

Man, it sure makes you remember what a strong company Palm WAS at one point

Peace Out

The spy in the movie was also a palm promoter.
