Palm Releases TomTom6 Update for Treo 680 and 750 Users

Posted By: Kris Keilhack on Friday, February 09, 2007 5:44:25 PM

Palm has posted an update to their support site (curiously dated January 31st but only available as of February 9th) for owners of the latest Treo 680 and 750 smartphones. Essentially an official version of a hack reported over a month ago discovered by some TreoCentral members.

This update enables purchasers of the Palm GPS Navigator 2 kit to use it on the Treo 680 and 750. Treo 750 owners will have to provide their own miniSD card for external map storage due to the fact that this kit comes bundled pre-loaded fullsize MultiMedia card that will not fit in the 750's slot. An SD/MMC card reader is required to install the updated files.

No other apparent benefits are mentioned in this update nor does Palm recommend owners of Treo 650, 700p, and 700w/wx devices install this update. The availability and publication of this patch by Palm adds an interesting twist to the Palm/TomTom partnership as previous TomTom Navigator 5 for Palm OS updates were distributed exclusively through TomTom's website.

The 680 download link leads to an EULA, that leads to... nowhere. Annoying. Once it's available, I hope it fixes the 5-way problem as well: left/right on the nav no longer works on the 680. Has anyone else had a chance to try it yet?

I also cannot download it off Palm's site. I'm eager to try it out. Perhaps it's available at an alternate site?

Thanks Dirk, that link worked great.

Unfortunately the 5-way is still not properly supported in this update. Curses!

Does anyone here have a Treo 680 and the "official" Palm GPS Navigator 3 kit? Does the from-the-factory version of TomTom 6.03 work properly with the 5-way navigator pad?

5-way nav works for me with 6.03 on 680.

5-way works for me now - I somehow missed copying the start.prc file to the PALM directory of the SD card. But now I have a new bug: for no reason at all, it'll screech three calendar alarms in a row when it opens. Weird. Otherwise works fine...
