I Remember the Day

One thing that hasn't changed: the terrible troll population around here. Oh well.

Tell the truth, wouldn't you give an arm and a leg for a modern updated version of the m5xx with 320x480 screen, Graffiti 1, a real bluetooth stack, built in Wifi, built-in VPN, 4G of storage, and a multi-tasking, memory protected operating system?

The M505 was my first Palm and I remember receiving it though the post a couple days earlier than it's official release date in the UK.
This suited me well as I was off to Paris the following day, so uploaded my contacts and diary, some video clips and pictures and packed it in my gadget bag with other kit (laptop, video camera & 2mp digital camera).
At the airport security pulled me a side and before opening my bag asked quite excitedly whether I'd got the new Palm , (he must have spotted some differences in the x-ray compared to the Palm V). Anyway he was very keen to see the new device so I ended up giving him a full demo of the new Palm, including the video clips and he and a now crowd of people looked on all very impressed by the new device, particularly those with the Palm V's in their pockets. The Palm M505 certainly did have a ‘wow' factor in it's day.
I love the form factor of the M505, I always thought it was a pity that the Tungsten series got bigger. If Palm ever launches a new PDA with a new OS and high resolution screen I think the M505 form factor would be great to see again.

Those changes wouldn't require much new hardware (a new screen, a new embedded wireless chip) but they would require a lot of new software. Palm hasn't written much new software in the last 5 years.

danceman @ 3/16/2008 9:24:06 AM # Q
I didn't like the m505, yes it was small, but I returned it cause the screen was to dull and it wasn't that cheap and the OS I had already flushed into my other palm. I went back to my Palm IIIc, saved me some money and bought later a Tungstun T which I still use for podcasts.

please stop wishing for a new PDA. it's tantamount to wishing for a new typewriter, buggy whip, VHS or 8-Track Player.

the PDA is dead. the world has moved on and so should you.

RE: I Remember the Day
T_W @ 3/16/2008 12:22:24 PM # Q
Move onto what?

A too big UMPC?
A postage stamp screen, no wifi, and a 2 year contract with a smart phone?

Speaking of the dead PDA market, how is the iPod touch selling?

Thats what Palm is missing and should be able to do to win back a lot of Palm fanboys... CAPTURE OUR IMAGINATION.

That seems to have come from Apple nowadays. I think Palm knows this and i believe them when they Colligan said "enough modifications... we are going to retake the mantle".

I don't see anything on market for me.
So I'm still on palm m505 and works for me just fine.

GSM phone is good for many things, but not for book reading, text imput (G1 rullz and I still hate G2, which is worse than PocketPC version), and many good apps, LONG battery life and transreflective screen, metal case...

And I don't expect anything from palm anymore.
If my palm would die.. maby the next thing for me could be Nokia N800/N810.

danceman @ 3/16/2008 2:26:29 PM # Q
Your right If all you want is a good small PIM with some good extra apps M505 is great.

ITouch is want TX2 should of been or while be. Hardware (glass screen, brighter screen, thinner, finger friendly) and Operating System (Linux).

Maybe with the Palm Nova things may change, Palm may be posponding because of Nova. Having Nova which is Linux is the right way to good, hacker friendly. We will be able to run apps based on linux, apps from ALP, OpenMoko, Android and any other Linux, we will just compile. Don't forget Java is way better on the Linux platform also. Theres Wine to run Window apps, theres virtualization to run other systems. Oh and ALP Garnet Emulator which we can still run our old Palm apps.

Reading these news articles is depressing because it reminds me of the optimism in the "Palm economy" and the dynamic environment (Palm, Handspring, Sony, Garmen, etc.). Reading these items makes me realise how much we have descoped our expectations. Am I happy with my Treo 680, yes. But is there the same exuberance or interest in Palm (or from Palm) anymore, no.

Reminds me of the days when WordPerfect was losing out to MS Word. We WordPerfect people kept touting the benefits of the tool, while trying to deny that the tide was running out for that ship. Regardless of how 'superior' WordPerfect was, it looked tired, 3rd party developers were leaving, magazines dedicated to the product were disappearing and we felt on the defensive. That's how I feel now. I will continue to use Palm OS (been using it since 1997), but do I feel any hope or enthusiasm, no.

T_W,

Now that's hittin' the nail on the head. I'm with Rock on this one. Shut up man! You're illustration made me a little sick at the stomach. That was the year 2000 and the tech path to bring what you suggest seems so simple today.

Yes, I do want what you suggest. Unfortunately Apple, not Palm seems to be the only ones who think so. Gosh, I haven't even thot about G1 in a loooong time. I remember reading the little manuallette on the keystrokes and it was like baaaam, a few days and I was off and running. Worked flawlessly on my IIIe Special Edition Clear, then my SPT-1500, then my Vx. When I got the m505 about 6-12 months after release I noticed that G1 was a little less accurate than all the others. I had no idea that it was the tip of the "zen of Palm" iceberg.

The 505 had killer battery life with that reflective (not-transflective) screen. If you'll remember that backlight defaulted to off so the screen would use reflected room / outdoor lighting to view. In dim situations the backlight took over if needed

I'm dreamin' now ... :-)
M506
Similar thin metal body
Full SDHC support
21st century multimedia SW suite
HVGA
128mb real RAM
Palm OS 5.2.1+ (yeah, I could live with refined non-NVFS)
512mhz
WiFi(g)
BT2
G1
VR, vibralarm
Treo like physical sound switch
2mpx cam with good vids
3.5mm audio (OK, that's a bit over the top for Palm)
Mini-USB connector
Fat enough stylus to allow ink pen option
Good BT dumbphone support

... awww fergettit'. I'll just settle for an iTouch and wait on the SDK results. :-/

Oooh, G1 could be huge if implemented again on the right platforms. The iPhone/iPodTouch weakness is on the input side. A move by Palm to add G1 interface to an M506 or TX type device with Nova could make a serious run for the market! Come on Palm. Wow us with Nova.

RE: I Remember the Day
hkklife @ 3/16/2008 7:06:55 PM # Q
That's a lovely unit, Pat, but it'd take Nova and a hardware/engineering/R&D dept. a LOT more aggressive, better funded, and motivated than that of Palm's to come up with such a design.

Here's a device that could've really been a strong successor to the TX had it arrived sometime in '06 or early '07:

-m505 formfactor & construction. No Hungary-made units, please! :-)
-320x480 LCD
-Garnet 5.4.9 with as many bugs worked out as possible!
-128mb RAM (with lots of DBheap/cache)
-Fullsize SDHC slot
-Same stylus size as m500 but all-metal construction
-Treo-style 5-way navigator
-Highest capacity possible internal battery (this is CRUCIAL)
-BT 1.2 & 802.11g. Full BT DUN support for GSM & CDMA phones with regularly updated PhoneLink software. Palm would NOT have to worry about this thing cannibalizing Treo sales! Do you think Nokia's really lost sleep over the N-series Internet Tablets stealing their dumbphone sales?
-Graffiti 1. Or, at worst, G2 standard and G1 available as a fully-supported $20 downloadable plug-in from Palm
-Intelligent backlight sensor that could dim/brighten the lamp as necessary
-312mhz CPU (for batttery saving purposes, of course)
-3.5mm headphone jack
-Strong software suits (ala Centro)
-Athena connector or the new proprietary connector coming on the 800w

The classic Ideo-designed Palm V was (and is) a true icon of technology. But the m500 refined the Palm V and improved upon it in every way. It's a true pity that Palm didn't follow a 3-pronged approach in the OS5 era, going with their chunky but robust T|T slider line in the midrange, the Zires for the low-end, and a "Veld" (hah!) line based on the Palm V/m500 FF for their high end.

Pilot 1000->Pilot 5000->PalmPilot Pro->IIIe->Vx->m505->T|T->T|T2->T|C->T|T3->T|T5->TX->Verizon Treo 700P->Verizon 755p

Listen, I had the opportunity to post the first comment here and that's just about what I was going to write too!

Hell, bring back the color m505 with OS5. I just need PIM. It'd suit me nicely. Small, thin, light, lovely to look at.

For good battery life, I gave up OS5 and ARM processor...
I have good phone that can do all communication and multimedia stuff.
And palm is doing all other things that phone can't.

Senior Citizens

DevPOV @ 3/16/2008 8:52:03 PM # Q
Wow, this article makes me feel like a couple of old senior citizens sitting on the porch fondly remembering the old days. Glory days past with all that potential, and letting it slide down between the fingers like a handful of sand, but forever held in the minds of those early pioneers who paved the way for that bright future.

It was good while it lasted. Time to move on. Eventually, something else will inspire us and that lost road will again be recovered and trodden upon for new glories.

RE: Senior Citizens
Tuckermaclain @ 3/16/2008 9:37:08 PM # Q
I agree. I just fished my m500 out and charged it and restored the backup from the card. Had to remember to re-enable PiDirest and refresh JackFlash to completely restore the data. Man, those 160x160 screens are not what I remember, and I think the Dragonball processor was neutered. It made my T2 that I use today seem pretty fast.

I want the 505 form with 320x480, microSD, BT with universal phone compatability, TX-like RAM.

For my phone I want the above features in a slider like the LG Rumor with that great keyboard. Auto portrait-> landscape when it opens.

What I'll see next is a candy-bar style centro II with a smaller screen and a KB the size of a large postage stamp.

Gekko @ 3/16/2008 9:42:22 PM # Q

"The past can't be brought back. Dwight Eisenhower said that the good old days (as we remember them) will never come back again, because they never were. We can turn the clock back, but time rushes on. The river of life runs one way and never back upstream. You can't beat the baked-cake back into the batter, the concrete sidewalk back into the cement mixer, the cut lumber back into the tree, the grown person back into the child. If you are yearning for the good old days, just turn off the air conditioning. Nostalgia is like grammar; you find the present tense and the past perfect. The good old days are gone, no matter how we tend to idealize or fantasize."

"We seem to be going through a period of nostalgia, and everyone seems to think yesterday was better than today. I don't think it was, and I would advise you not to wait ten years before admitting today was great. If you're hung up on nostalgia, pretend today is yesterday and just go out and have one hell of a time." - Art Buchwald

"The past is never there when you try to go back. It exists, but only in memory. To pretend otherwise is to invite a mess." - Chris Cobbs

"Romance like a ghost escapes touching; it is always where you are not, not where you are. The interview or conversation was prose at the time, but it is poetry in the memory." - George William Curtis

PacManFoo @ 3/17/2008 8:44:18 AM # Q
You may not be able to go back but the past always comes back. I thought we left Bell Bottoms in the 70's but low and behold a few years ago they came back. I'll always have a need for the type of things my Palm M505 did/does as long as my memory continues to get worse. What form factor this data resides in may change but the need will always be there.

PDA's Past and Present:
Palm TX (Number 2)
Palm - IIIxe, Vx, M500, M505, Tungsten T, TX
Handspring - Edge, Platinum, Deluxe
Sony - SJ22, UX50
Casio-EM500
Apple - MP110, MP2000, MP2100

8 Years Ago... how about 8 Years From Now

theog @ 3/17/2008 2:05:11 AM # Q
Google seems to be jealous of apple and going all out to crush the iphone (if you believe the rhetoric)... my guess is that palm will get caught in the mix.

Best thing for Palm infocenter to do is migrate to reporting about other devices and become a "general" palm (as in hand, not as in Palm Inc) website.

Palm Inc is doomed... but humans will always have palms. I used to hate all the doom and gloom people, but I think the obvious is upon us at this point.

Like watching a close friend die. :-(

If Palm can deliver in mid-2008 a slick future Treo hardware for the enterprise user followed in early 2009 by a great Nova software (and accompanying TX successor), the word you are searching for might be "resurrection."

Personally, I think Palm is trying to get Nova out for a late 2008 release. I purposely believe they have laid out a low expectation timeline this round. They have notoriously missed timelines so often before JR took over that no one expects them to get it right anymore. If Palm delivers a solid and exciting Nova in November or December, then they will turn heads. People will be talking about how Palm is actually moving. :)

If Palm fails on Nova, "Taps" is in order.

RE: 8 Years Ago... how about 8 Years From Now
theog @ 3/17/2008 10:45:42 AM # Q
Problem is that nova won't start selling until 2009 if palms gets it out in late 2008. You have to count "testing" time from sprint... heck, as long as it takes verizon, they might not have it until late 2009. I've went down as saying no earlier than April 2009.

I keep reading the business news looking for Palm going into bankruptcy or Palm being sold to xxx company.

I don't believe they are putting false times out... palm is in trouble. Where is the 800wx so many people are talking about? Knowing my luck it will be released today and I'll look like an idiot, but it has been a slow roll on that device... maybe now waiting on windows 6.1... or so the pundits say.

I can't tell the future, but palm's does not look too promising. If goolge hits a home run with android, I think we can hang it up for palm. One "stable" android phone with the "look" of a palm, people will flock to it. One windows OS device with the "look" of a palm, people will flock to it.

Palm makes a nice phone because we don't have many choices... I hate sliders and I don't care for a phone that does not have a touchscreen. That leaves me stuck with my palm device.

Eh. Palm could always surprise everyone and announce one final PDA that has Nova on it. That would 1) get the OS out there for all to see, 2) bypass the wait needed for a cellphone version, 3) enable feedback to improve the cellphone version (right, like Pal, EVER listens...).

Visors

Geo @ 3/17/2008 3:50:03 PM # Q
As a longtime former Visor owner (including the Prism), I enjoyed reading what people were arguing about back in 2001. I was pretty happy with my Prism (aside from lack of a handy belt holster), never warmed up to The Edge (apologies to U2), and only begrudgingly gave it up for a Palm Zire 71 in 2003, which I still use now.

People were complaining about ... well, pretty much everything they complain about today.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. :-D

RE: Visors
BaalthazaaR @ 3/17/2008 4:37:17 PM # Q
My previous PDA was the Visor Edge. I loved it. It is still a great PDA. Solid construction no problems what so ever. I had a few of the springboard modules too. I loved the idea of being able to expand the PDA when needed. I was sad to see the springboard functionality die. However I can understand it given that most of the springboard modules out there were worthless. I finally moved to the TX for the wi-fi and newer OS for some of the new apps out there. I still use the Edge occasionally for my backup PDA for the contacts, calendar and one app that runs on there especially when I forget to recharge my TX.
