Rumor Suggests Palm Eos Still on Track

A few days after an bearish analyst predicted a delay for the rumored Palm Eos, a speculative report has been published that suggests the unannounced device will indeed arrive later this year. Digitimes, citing a Chinese-language newspaper, is reporting that volume shipments of the entry-level Palm Eos smartphone will begin in October 2009.

Monthly orders for the Eos, which features a 2.6-inch multi-touch display and supports GSM/HSPA initially, will reach 400,000-500,000 units, which will help drive up Compal's revenues starting in the fourth quarter, the paper said, adding Compal will also begin to ship a CDMA EV-DO version of the Eos to Palm in the first quarter of 2010.

Roughly a year ago, the same paper, Commercial Times, claimed a similar deal between Palm and Compal for an order of several models of smartphones in the millions of units.

...is going to be shipping by the millions before year end starting in a month and half, huh?

As Engadget noted, if it really was coming so soon there'd likely have been some kind of FCC certification leak by now.

Still, you never know. Palm's gotten a lot better at the secrecy thing. I'm still amazed they were able to keep such a tight lid on webOS.

I would not be surprised if a private investigator has been hired around Palm to sort out those that can keep their mouth shut vs. those who love to post leaks on the net to feel important.

The Eos makes a lot more sense that the Pre IMO. It is a single piece with no hinges or sliders. The screen is a bit smaller to make room for the keyboard (this is going to drive third party developers up a wall) and will go well for those that like the "Blackberry block" style of smartphone.

It has a good shot at doing well. Perhaps this is the one going to Verizon?

^^ WRT the smaller Eos screen, Palm does post this advice on their developer portal:

Think Broadly

As you develop your webOS app, you need to think about the platform. Although Pre is the first webOS enabled device, it will not be the last, and future devices may employ different hardware configurations and display sizes. When you are thinking about design, you should think flexibility and adaptability. Pre has a certain display size, but you need to follow the human interface design guidelines to be sure your app will run on any webOS device, regardless of hardware features.

So now we get to watch all the Disciples of Steve weigh in with how this isn't enough units and the luddites complain it isn't a TX.

This isn't nearly enough units - I mean, come on Palm. Die already.

Oh, and this dumb thing isn't even as good as a TX!!? A TX that has been around for years! What were they thinking?

;-)

Good, but deeper Qs in here

#1... "and supports GSM/HSPA initially" ... #2 "... adding Compal will also begin to ship a CDMA EV-DO version of the Eos to Palm in the first quarter of 2010. "

#1 Which HSPA flavor? Read "which continent /country" are we talking about here?

#2 Which EVDO carrier? I'm assuming VZW, but I wonder if Sprint will get it too similar to the Centro.

Palm's Colligan Said to Reject Jobs's Offer to Stop Recruiting

By Connie Guglielmo

Aug. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Former Palm Inc. Chief Executive Officer Ed Colligan rejected a proposal from Apple Inc.'s Steve Jobs to refrain from hiring each other's employees two years ago, calling it wrong and "likely illegal," according to their communications.

Colligan, who stepped down as CEO in June, discussed the matter with Jobs in August 2007, as the mobile-phone war heated up, according to the communications. Apple had introduced the iPhone two months earlier, just as Palm hired a former Apple executive, Jon Rubinstein, to develop new smart phones. Jobs, Apple's CEO, told Colligan he was concerned that Rubinstein was recruiting Apple employees. "We must do whatever we can to stop this," Jobs said in the communications.

The U.S. Justice Department is investigating possible collusion in hiring among technology companies, a person familiar with the probe said in June. Derick Mains, a spokesman for Palm, said the company hasn't been contacted by the Justice Department. Bloomberg News reviewed the communications between Jobs and Colligan.

The exact details of what Jobs proposed to Colligan aren't known; Jobs didn't mention a proposal in the communications reviewed by Bloomberg. Jobs said Apple had patents and more money than Palm if the companies ended up in a legal fight, according to the communications. Apple, maker of the Macintosh personal computer, declined to comment, said Katie Cotton, a spokeswoman for the Cupertino, California-based company. Jobs didn't respond to an e-mail seeking comment.

Who was the source of this? Isn't that strange? Here's the ONLY thing this article says:

== "...according to their communications..."

Were those "communications" just laying in the street ready for the reporter to pick them up?

Come to think of it, were those "communications" even...you know...real?

You're *fast*, Gekko. i'm writing up a post for this now

SV: sounds like the information may have come from Colligan himself, if it's true.

My problem with this initial "report" (and all the others spawned by it) is that the reports actually SAYS that the "communications" didn't overtly say what the report is about! Yet, of course, the headline and the content of each "report" say Jobs asked for the "No hiring" bit! Hmmmm...

== "...The exact details of what Jobs proposed to Colligan aren't known;
== Jobs didn't mention a proposal in the communications reviewed by
== Bloomberg..."

So, like, uh, where's the beef‽

Sounds like there was a whole series of emails, and the reporter only got to peek at a few of them.

Almost certainly, the leak was from Palm. Apple are already being investigated by the Justice Department for a similar deal with Google, so it's very doubtful it came from them...

A commenter at BusinessInsider says:

given Ed's response, he did it so there was, in fact, a paper trail. If there was ever a lawsuit he had leverage showing that Jobs had approached him (most likely not via email) about something illegal.

Ed and Steve go pretty far back when Ed was an exec at Radius doing a lot of video stuff for Apple in the early days. They talked pretty regularly on the phone but it started turning sour in the '05 timeframe due to forthcoming competing product plans and poaching from both sides (I was there).
