Back Problems Trigger More Buyout Rumors for Palm

In a sign of how ridiculous the Wall St. rumors have been around Palm lately, news that Palm's CFO Andrew Brown, cancelled a planned financial presentation due to a back injury. Brown was scheduled to speak at a J.P. Morgan Chase technology conference in Boston today.

The explanation led to market speculation that briefly pushed Palm's stock price up 4% in trading Tuesday afternoon as Investors 'speculated' the cancellation was a sign of an impending deal for the company.

Palm subsequently went to great lengths to dispel the rumors in statements to financial reporters saying Brown has a history of back problems and was advised by his doctor not to fly.

Palm Releases Treo Security Updates

Palm has released security updates for the Treo 650, 680 and 700p to patch the Treo "find vulnerability" made public earlier this year.

When the Treo password protection is enabled, the password protection can be partially circumvented by running the Find feature while on the "Make Emergency Call" screen. This would allow a malicious user to view a list of search results from the Treo's built-in applications such as Contacts, Calendar, Tasks, Memos and Email. The malicious user cannot access or display anything beyond the search results list.

The update for each device is available from Palm's support downloads page. It is a 142kb prc file that runs an installer and soft resets the device.

Palm Says 700p Update Still on Track

Paul Loefler, Palm's usual public face in all matters related to the 700p ROM update, has made a small post to the Palm blog. Mr. Loefler briefly states that the 700p's long-awaited update is still on track for release during the week of May 28th.

With the recent announcement and widespread retail availability of the new Treo 755p, Palm can now focus on resolving the 700p's myriad of issues and properly EOLing the device. While Sprint has replaced the Treo 700p with the new 755p, Verizon, Alltel and other CDMA carriers are still stocking and selling the 700p with no announced plans to move to the 755p for the immediate future.

Personal Audio Recorder Pro Review

Personal Audio Recorder ReviewOne question I've fielded on more than one occasion concerns which program to use for audio recording on Palm OS devices without a standard voice memo app. With the arrival of the excellent TaleStuff add-on microphones for the Palm TX and T5 handhelds, I had to find a capable audio recording application to use on Palm handhelds never intended by Palm to be used for audio capture. Enter Personal Audio Recorder Pro!

CorePlayer Update Delayed Until June

In what may not a surprise to longtime followers of the CorePlayer saga, the release date for this updated version of this popular mobile media app has been pushed back to June 14th.

May 14th was the date previously earmarked for the newest version of the formerly freeware multi-platform program. A post by CoreCodec emplyee "BetaBoy" in the CC forums gives additional information. While essentially unchanged from the previous PIC news article, this thread does offer some updated information on bugfixes as well as some screenshots of the new version of the app. You can read our previous CorePlayer review here.

Samsung Announces 8 GB microSD Card

8gb microSDOne of the undisputable tradeoffs in going from the full-size SD slots on the Treo 700p and 680 to the miniSD-enabled Treo 755p and 750 is the reduction in card storage capacity from 8 GB to a mere 4 GB. At the present time, owners of these newest Treo 755p and 750 equipped with miniSD slots cannot utilize the now-widespread and affordable 8 GB full-size SDHC cards and are limited to the handful of rare 4gb miniSDHC cards on the market. Samsung announced they have managed to leapfrog 8 GB in the larger miniSD formfactor and somehow squeezed 8gb into the tiny thumbnail-sized microSD (formerly TransFlash) format.

In theory, this development could be a boon for Treo owners even if larger miniSD cards do not appear, as the microSD format is electrically compatible with miniSD and only requires an adapter card to move between devices. microSD cards are most commonly seen on smaller featurephones, with miniSD the norm for most recent smartphones and a few cameras and camcorders. Unfortunately, production of these large-capacity microSD cards is only set for mid-2008. Hopefully affordable 8 GB miniSDHC cards will be released in the interim to ease the pain felt when hitting the 4gb flash card ceiling.
