In June, Palm's CEO Eric Benhamou said his company would be releasing three new models this fall. Today, Todd Bradley, who is CEO of Palm's Solutions Group, said it would be launching all three of these next month, according to
ZDnet. While Bradley did give launch dates and some brief descriptions for these models, he didn't reveal too many details.
For readers of this site, the most important day is probably October 28, when the company will launch worldwide two new high-end models: a Palm OS 5 model and a smartphone.

Geek.com has been leaked a picture of the Palm Zire, the low-end model Palm Inc. is expected to announce next month. This confirms much of what has previously been leaked about this model, including that it has only two hardware application buttons, not the four that have always been standard on Palm OS models.
Update: Todd Bradley, CEO of Palm's Solutions Group, said his company's entry-level model will be launched October 7.

Research In Motion, maker of the Blackberry, has filed a patent-infringement lawsuit against Handspring. The suit claims that the keyboard on most Treo models violates a RIM patent, though no details are available at their point on exactly what about the Treo's keyboard RIM is complaining about. The company has patented every aspect of the Blackberry that it can and even holds a patent on the crescent shape that the keys are arranged in. A statement released by RIM late yesterday did not disclose what damages it is seeking.

Sony is a notoriously closemouthed company. As people are eagerly awaiting news of new Clié models running Palm OS 5, probably the best indicator is what the company is doing with its current high-end handhelds, the NR70 and NR70V. And with Sony being based in Japan, any word of a change is likely to come from there first. Recently, Sony has been showing signs that it is close to phasing these out in its home country. Last month, it stopped supplying them to retailers in Tokyo. A few weeks ago, SonyStyle Japan dropped the price of both models by 10,000 Yen. And today, they are listed on
SonyStyle Japan as discontinued.

Earlier this year, PalmSource announced that it would be including a Web browser with Palm OS 5. Though the rest of the operating system was finalized and given to the licensees in June, the PalmSource Web Browser was just released today. It supports a collection of Web standards that a desktop browser might envy.
PalmSource's browser will work with almost any type of connection to the Internet, including traditional dial-up connections and wireless networking. Web
pages are rendered in their entirety on the handheld just as they would be on a desktop browser. For slower connections, users can disable images to speed up downloads. The browser has been optimized to run on ARM-based processors for maximum rendering speed.

The Treo 90 is the first model from Handspring that has an SD slot. Until now, this only supported memory cards. Handspring has released the
Treo 90 Updater 1.0, which allows this handheld to use SD Input/Output (SDIO) cards. These are peripherals that plug into the handheld through the SD slot. Handspring said specifically that the Treo 90 will now be able to use the palm Bluetooth SD card for wireless networking and Margi System's Presenter-to-Go presentation tool.

Surely one of the most popular categories of Palm apps is launcher replacements. QuickTap has thrown its hat into the ring with Launcher PLUS, which supports hi-res screens, themes, and up to 255 categories. However, it cannot display apps stored on memory cards, though the company is working to add this feature. It is available now for $18. -Ed
