Palm OS handhelds can be used for lots of things, from keeping track of phone numbers to writing the Great American Novel. For those looking for an unusual way to use their Palm, consider making it into a robot. There are several kits available for a range of skill levels, from the amateur to the expert.
J. Osborn has developed a robot controlled by a Palm and a Pontech serial interface module. His website gives a complete description on how to make one. The materials for this add up to less than $150, not counting the Palm, of course.

An anonymous source has come forward with full details on the the CDMA version of the Treo that Handspring will release before the end of June. Because it will run on Sprint's 3G network, it will have a much higher data rate than the current Treo models. It will have a 16-bit color screen. At this time it looks like there will only be a keyboard version available.

OmniRemote Pro, which offers numerous new features. It now supports Palm OS 4, color screens, 320 by 320 displays, and thumbwheels. It is available now for $25.

Basejet is is a wireless email application that is now in development. It can connect with Outlook, Notes, POP3, and IMAP4 mail servers and forward messages to a wireless handheld. It offers HTML and Rich Text support as well as the ability to read attachments in Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat formats. Basejet is currently a public beta; the company hopes to have it available around the middle of May. Pricing has not yet been determined.

Cnet, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates will announce later today that this company will release numerous products that support the short-range wireless networking standard, Bluetooth. Of particular importance to the handheld world is the update planned for this fall which will add Bluetooth support to Windows XP. The company will also release some peripherals with Bluetooth built in, including keyboards.

Sometimes, rumors of new handhelds are filled with details or at least give some of the characteristics of a not-yet-released device. But not always. Info on two new handhelds has leaked out with minimal details.
According to Brando's news site, Sony is planning to release a new Clié model in June. And that is all he knows.

Today, Cutting Edge Software has announced that users of Corsoft’s
Aileron wireless email application now have the ability to send and receive
Quickoffice documents and spreadsheets with their wireless devices. Aileron's service will automatically convert the Quickoffice files into Microsoft Office ones and vice versa.
Individuals can subscribe to Corsoft’s e-mail service for $30 a year. Thanks to a special going on until the end of April, Quickoffice is $30. A bundle of the two is available on Handango for $50.

During a conference call with analysts this afternoon after announcing its most recent quarterly results, Handspring executives talked about the company's plans for future models.
Some of these plans don't come as a surprise. The company intends to release a color version of the Treo and one that runs on CDMA wireless networks that are widely used in the U.S.
