Some Good News for Bluetooth Fans

There were a couple of recent Bluetooth-related announcements that should warm the hearts of people anticipating that wireless networking standard's eventual acceptance.

Axis Communications and Palm, Inc. are going to work together to make sure that Palm handheld users can connect to a Bluetooth network powered by the AXIS 9010 Bluetooth Access Point, which is also in development.

DDH Software Unveils New HanDBase Apps

DDH Software, maker of the HanDBase relational database, has unveiled its new HanDBase Data Exchange at TechXNY. This lets HanDBase users integrate their handheld databases with Microsoft Access on desktop PCs and ODBC compatible software applications (e.g. FileMaker Pro, Oracle, My SQL, etc.) on corporate networks. They have also launched a program to offer HanDBase applications that have been created by and for medical professionals.

A Big Week for New Visor Add-ons

TT Tech announced the SnapNType, a small keyboard that attaches to the bottom of the Visor and is intended to be used with the thumbs. No battery is required. The original version, when it is released at the end of this month, will work with the Visor, Deluxe, Prism, and Platinum. They are also working on a version for the Palm V series and others. No pricing is available yet.

PC Expo 2001 Report

Once again, handhelds and wireless devices took over the convention floor at the PC Expo. Generally, this year’s expo was a little more subdued than last year, with most of the dot com’s out of the picture and IT firms tightening their belts. Though there weren’t many new earth shattering announcements or products, there was plenty of new and existing Palm accessories and solutions on display. Read on and take a look.

Quickies: OS 3.5.3, Launcher III v2.3, CodeWarriorU, PhoneMate

Palm has released an OS 3.5.3 update . This patch resolves low-level system issues that might cause certain third party apps to not function as intended. It addresses a flow control problem and a dynamic UI pointer issue. Palm recommends installing this on any Palm running a version of OS 3.5. -Christian Elkjer

Launcher III v2.3 will have added support for memory cards and memory sticks, according to the author. It eliminates the need to use both PowerRun and MSMount. It is in beta now. -Roger

Interesting Gadgets and Gizmos Appear at TECHXNY

Many companies use TECHXNY as the place announce new products.

MoveIt! is a motion-sensing SDIO device that will be out as soon as the SD Association finalizes the SD input/output standard. It is meant to be used by developers to add motion sensing to their applications. The obvious use is games but the maker suggests that one-handed tilt-to-scroll as a use in regular applications. This was demoed during Mr. Yankowski's keynote speech.

Palm Reports Bad Quarter, But Not as Bad as Expected

Palm, Inc. has reported the results for its fourth quarter of fiscal 2001. It has narrowly beat both analysts' expectations and its own revised projections, posting a loss of $153.6 million, or 16 cents a share. It reported revenues of $165.3 million. Analysts had been expecting losses of 19 cents a share on revenues of $145.5 million.

Xircom to Release Wi-Fi Module for m500

Today at the TECHXNY conference, Intel announced an 802.11b module for the Palm m500 series. The Xircom Wireless LAN Module snaps onto the back of the handheld and uses plug-and-play software for quick installation. Providing Palm m500 series users with high-speed, wireless access to the Internet, e-mail or data stored on the network, the new module can also establish wireless peer-to-peer connections with other WLAN devices. It will be available in July for $300.

Palm Makes a Slew of Enterprise-Related Announcements

During his keynote address at TECHXNY this morning, Palm CEO Carl Yankowski announced numerous new agreements designed to increase Palm's presence at large companies.

They are going to work harder with Panasonic to increase acceptance of the Secure Digital (SD) memory and Input/Output (SDIO) card standards in the enterprise and with consumers. This will include both joint advertising and encouraging developers to create applications that large companies need that use SD technology.

WordSmith 2.0 Adds Improved Fonts

Blue Nomad, LLC has announced WordSmith 2.0, which adds FineType font technology. This is a display option that makes text appear sharper. However, this works only on color devices. It also adds full bookmark support. In addition, users can preserve, edit, and create new footnotes, endnotes, and comments, and can preserve page setup (i.e., paper sizes, page orientation, margins) and default language as well. It will be available in early July for $30.

Bachmann Software Introduces FilePoint

Today at TECHXNY, Bachmann Software unveiled a beta version of its new FilePoint software, a file management system for Palm Powered handhelds. Integrating key aspects of application and file management in a single user-friendly interface, FilePoint includes an enhanced search feature that provides fast retrieval of needed documents from the assortment of third-party applications by querying on file name, date, or keyword. A feature allowing users to view the most recently opened documents is also available.

Wireless Service for Monochrome Cliés Announced

Sony and GoAmerica have announced the wireless service for the Clié that they promised back last November. Called MYLO for MY Life Online, it will be available for unlimited access at $40 a month.

In a move that is sure to be controversial, the two companies are only releasing a wireless modem that fits the just announced PEG-S320 and the first-generation PEG-S300. At this time there is no way for the top-of-the-line PEG-N710C or PEG-N610C to use the service.
