Quickies: For European Users

philmair sent in this report, "I've just picked up my m505 from Ryman store in Altrincham, Greater Manchester. They only had one in stock but they say they can get others by next-day delivery."

Developers in Europe can now buy older Palm models at the same discounts that U.S. developers were given a few weeks ago. For example, registered developers in the U.K. can order up to three Palm Vx for £142.47, IIIc for £142.47, IIIxe for £86.30, m100 for £70.98, or m105 for £86.30. These prices are good until August 31. -Ed

Review: Palm Portable Keyboard for m500 Series

Think Outside is the developer of the Stowaway keyboard, which is a full-sized keyboard that can be folded into a small shape that is easy to carry around. Palm liked the idea so much they asked Think Outside to be an OEM and Palm now sells these under the name Palm Portable Keyboard. Just last week a new PPK/Stowaway was released for the m500 series.

Add Bluetooth to V Series with Blue5

Tactel AB in Sweden demonstrated a new Bluetooth device at a recent conference. Blue5 is an add-on for the Palm V and Vx that lets the handheld communicate with other devices such as mobile phones, access points, or laptops. When a Bluetooth link is established to a mobile phone such as Ericsson R520, the Palm V will be connected to the Internet at a maximum speed of 44kBit (fixed connection).

It isn't clear yet what these are going to cost. The module will mainly be sold by OEM partners; the first official partner is Omnisky.

New Screen Technologies on Display

The Society for Information Display conference was this week and several companies showed off new technologies that might show up in future handhelds. The two most interesting were for flexible LCDs and Digital Ink.

A team of researchers Sarnoff Corporation, Penn State, and Kent State announced the first flexible plastic thin-film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT LCD) that can show video content. "With this technology it's possible that one day you'll carry around a computer display rolled up into a pen," said Michael Kane, Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Sarnoff. "You could show multimedia presentations on a paper-thin display that follows the contours of a curved wall, or fits easily into a streamlined cell phone or other portable device."

Matsushita Dropping SD Card Prices

In an attempt to make SD cards more competitive with Sony's Memory Sticks, Matsushita Electric has promised to cut the price of a 64 MB SD card from $180 to $95 this month. An equivalent MemStick is $120. The company is also committed to cutting the costs of all current SD cards by 90% by 2005, though in four years an 8 MB card may seem as pointless as a 20 MB hard drive in a PC does today.

Handspring Cuts Sales Predictions, Prism Price

Handspring admitted late yesterday that they aren't going to make their original sales estimates for their current quarter. Near the beginning, they estimated that sales would be over $130 million this quarter. Instead, they said yesterday are going to be closer to $60 million. Last quarter, Handspring had sales of $123.8 million.

As part of their attempts to increase sales, Handspring will cut the price of the Prism from $450 to $400. This should go into effect this weekend.

HandEra Releases AutoCard Beta

HandEra has released a beta version of AutoCard 2.0, AutoCF's successor. It allows applications and databases on a CompactFlash or SD card to act as if they were stored in RAM. This new version, in addition to getting a name change, also allows the user to choose which folder on the card to pull from. Another major change is it no longer appears as a preference panel; It is now a regular Palm application.

Sony N710C Can Display 16-Bit Color

To many, the only thing keeping the new Sony N710C from being the perfect handheld is that its 320x320 pixel screen can only display 256 colors. However, according to Red Mercury, that limitation is caused by the fact that the Clié is running OS 3.5, which has no support for 16-bit color. According to Red Mercury's site, "the high resolution screen and graphics chip in the PEG-N710C not only supports 320x320 resolution, but also supports 16-bit color."
