Palm Unveils Bluetooth SD Card

Bringing the Bluetooth short-range wireless communication standard one step closer to reality, Palm, Inc. announced today the Palm Bluetooth Card at the Bluetooth Congress 2001 in Monoco. The card, somewhat larger than a postage stamp, will allow for short-range, wireless communication between Palm handhelds and other Bluetooth-enabled devices, such as mobile phones, laptops, printers, network hubs and other handhelds.

Designed using the open industry-standard Secure Digital Input/Output (SDIO) specification, the Palm Bluetooth Card can be slipped into Palm handhelds that have the SD/MMC slot, currently the m500 and m505. The card, jointly developed by Palm and Toshiba, is expected to be available before the end of the year for $150 or less

Handspring Offers 25% Rebate on Visor Edge

In another salvo in the ongoing price war, Handspring has announced a $100 rebate on the new Visor Edge. That will bring the price down to $300. The plan goes into effect tomorrow, June 8, and lasts until July 1.

According to company spokesman Brian Jacquet, in order to receive the discount, customers will need to trade-in an old handheld from Handspring, Palm, or any of their competitors. "We're not being too picky," Mr. Jacquet. said. They will also accept Pocket PC's and even Apple Newtons.

In addition, customers who already own a Visor can pass it on to a friend or family member and receive the same $100 to put toward a new Visor Edge. Details on this trade-in will be available on this page at Handspring starting Friday.

eBooks Available for Wireless Download

SkipWire has announced partnerships with key companies to provide Palm enthusiasts with the ability to wirelessly build and access a personal library of online e-books and e-texts for wireless reference from a Palm. They have signed agreements with Qvadis, McGraw Publishing, and DiskUs Publishing.

Pocket Quicken 2.0 Released

LandWare has released Pocket Quicken 2.0, their financial tracking app. This new version offers improved account support and desktop synchronization. It also has enhanced transaction editing and budgeting. In addition, it has support for color screens and foreign currencies. It is available for Windows now and a Mac version is planned for Q3. It is $40, though registered users of previous versions can upgrade for $15.

Play Ababall for Arcade-style Action

Ababall is the first game from iambic Entertainment, iambic's newest division, and is for color-enabled devices only. It boasts 32 levels of play and varying difficulty, with new challenges and block layouts for every level and a bonus room for those who can make it all the way through.

Handspring Offers Developer Discounts

Handspring has torn a page from Palm's book and is offering discounts on its handhelds to registered developers. They can get 15% off the retail price of the Prism, Edge, and Platinum. This offer is good only for U.S. developers who were e-mailed a special code.

HandEra officially announced that the 330 is shipping. In a statement released yesterday, they said, "Last week the company began shipping direct phone and Web orders and will continue to fill reseller, retail and distribution channels over the next month." -Ed

Flashpro 2.0 from HandEra is in beta and should be released this week or next. It will provide support for OS 4.0 and the m500 series. -Jerry F. Giardina

AOL Apps Ready for Beta Testing

America Online has announced that three new Palm apps are now ready for beta testing. The first is AOL 3.0 for Palm OS, which introduces the ability to HotSync AOL e-mail to a Palm without a modem. It also adds the ability to use an AOL connection to run other Internet applications and allows a user to sign on over another ISP connection.

Noah Pro 2.0 Supports Expansion Cards

ArsLexis has released  Noah Pro 2.0, an English dictionary with definitions of 122 thousand words. This version supports Palm m500/m505 SD memory expansion, the Sony CLIE Memory Stick, the MemPlug for Visor, HandEra 330 SD/CF memory expansion, and TRGPro CompactFlash. It costs $20. Noah Lite, the free version, has not been updated so doesn't have expansion card support.

Access the Net Via Infrared and Bluefish

Bluefish Wireless has launched the Bluefish Network, a service that lets Palm users upload and download content on the go via their handheld's infrared port through any Bluefish access point, or by performing a HotSync operation. Palm users can beam on a Bluefish to receive up to the minute news from Reuters, and buy books, CDs, flowers, wine and many other products and services.

Keypad Turns VisorPhone into Mobile Phone

Kensington has developed a keypad that can be used with the Handspring VisorPhone. While the VisorPhone turns the Visor into a mobile phone, this keypad turns the VisorPhone into a mobile phone all on its own. As Handspring's latest online catalog says, "The Phone Keypad turns your VisorPhone into a stand-alone cellular phone and frees your Visor handheld for other uses." Pricing and availability aren't known yet.
