Motorola Licenses ARM's Chips

Motorola has licensed UK microchip developer ARM's 32-bit processor architecture which will allow them to make and sell ARM processors. Chips based on the ARM architecture are already in far more devices than ones designed by Motorola and this seems to be an admission that ARM chips are at least as good as Motorola's own designs, if not better. Palm has already stated that at some point in the future they will be stop using Motorola's Dragonball chips and switch to ARM processors. Motorola may have decided to switch in order to remain Palm's supplier.

Palm to Offer Refurbished Devices, IIIxe Rebate

With no fanfare, a page for selling refurbished devices has quietly appeared on Palm's Web site. However, right now the only thing the page has is the message, "We are not currently offering any refurbished Palm handhelds at this time."

PalmStation is reporting that Palm is offering a $50 rebate on IIIxe's purchased between December 3, 2000 and January 19, 2001. The source for this wasn't given, besides that note that you could get a rebate coupon from the store where you purchased the Palm. If anyone can corroborate this or give more details, it would be most appreciated.

Failed install of Palm OS 3.5 on Macintosh

Brian R., a Macintosh user, would like to point out a possible problem with Palm OS 3.5:

A word of warning, there seems to be a problem with the installer of the Macintosh download version of the Palm OS 3.5 Upgrade. I purchased and downloaded the upgrade. Once installed, I started the process. The installer had backed up my device as indicated. It then proceeded to install the OS upgrade. Once completed, it prompted me to put my device into debug mode. Once in debug mode, I placed the device back in the cradle where it proceeded to re-install the Palm OS. After going through this loop 3 or 4 times, I decided to give up. At this point in time, my device was stuck in debug mode, and would not respond to anything at all.

AT&T Switching to GSM

In a move that will help simplify the very fractured wireless data landscape in the United States, AT&T is going to switch its wireless networks to Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM). This is the standard used almost exclusively in Europe and Asia. In the U.S., the use of several competing standards have delayed the commercial acceptance of the wireless Web and left America lagging behind Europe and Japan.

GSM has a much higher potential connection speed than the method AT&T was using. However, they will continue to use the old wireless technology for users who want to keep their old phones or just want voice service. GSM will be targeted towards people who want data services, such as Palm users.

Agreement on MyPalm.com Domain Soon

Cnet has a story that Palm and the owner of MyPalm.com are close to an agreement. The owner would keep his e-mail address but redirect the Web page to Palm's site.

This might already be a done deal. Since sometime yesterday, attempts to reach MyPalm.com have been redirected to Palm's page about its upcoming MyPalm portal.
