Pocket PC Gaining on Palm

According to this Cnet article, Microsoft's Pocket PC now has 18% of the handheld market, up from 10% when the Pocket PC was released in April. IDC analyst Kevin Burden predicts that by 2004 Microsoft will have almost 40% of the market, compared with 51% for Palm.

The market research form Gartner is predicting that sales of Palm handhelds will wilt as consumers seek devices with more features. "We are predicting the death of single-function devices," Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney said.

Finally, a Truly Practical Wireless App

YadaYada Inc., the wireless ISP and mobile Web portal, today announced Bathroom Finder. Created by wireless portal Rovenet with the help of besttoilets.com, Bathroom Finder offers YadaYada subscribers a wireless guide to public restrooms in 12 cities. Users are given access to a directory of public restrooms that features both addresses and in-depth reviews of each facility, based on accessibility, cleanliness, and added amenities.

Games Take Center Stage

The relatively new HPUG web site has a comprehensive review of Liberty 1.2.1, the GameBoy emulator for the Palm. It starts at the beginning and works it's way through the advanced functions, with lots of screenshots in between. It also features an uncut interview with Aaron Ardiri, one of the developers of Liberty, in which he discusses his personal Palm preferences, the future of Liberty, the future of the Palm Platform, and much more. -Matthew Mullenweg

You can now download the GamePad developer kit and start integrating native support for the GamePad clip-on that was discussed previously here. The initial discussion was that the developer kit was $89 - this was only for pre-production units that were being built. The development kit is free, and you can download it from the World Wide Widget Works web site. At the moment, the development kit only supports the Code Warrior development environment.

Kyocera Officially Unveils Palm-Based Smartphone

Kyocera Wireless Corp. is announcing the Kyocera QCP 6035 Smartphone that is both a Palm OS-based organizer and a CDMA digital wireless phone. This is the same device of which the advanced photos and details leaked out in October. Commercial availability of the Kyocera Smartphone is expected in the first quarter of 2001 for an as yet undisclosed price.

Operating on CDMA PCS (1900 MHz), CDMA cellular (800 MHz) and analog cellular networks, the Smartphone offers many features, including a built-in speakerphone, voice-activated dialing and a jog-dial for accessing phone settings, contact information and call history. It runs the Palm OS v3.5 with 8 MB of memory.

Write Palm Apps in VB with AppForge Toolkit

AppForge will soon be releasing a new plug-in for Visual Basic that will allow users to more easily develop Palm apps using VB. The apps will require that the AppForge virtual machine (about 300k) be installed on the Palm to run. AppForge Toolkit also uses Ingots, special ActiveX controls that provide all the functionality one would normally expect from standard VB Components. Ingots can be placed onto a form and are specially built to be used in the embedded space. Every standard Ingot has code that also runs in the AppForge Runtime. It will be available December 11 for $300.

MyPalm.com website address dispute

Two weeks ago Palm Inc. announced a new wireless Internet portal called MyPalm. The portal is expected to be launched on Dec 25th in beta.

Shortly after that announcement, Dominic Hulewicz, the registered owner of the domain MyPalm.com received a letter from Palms legal team.

CitiKey: no more?

We've all seen a flounder of city based service guides available on the Palm Computing Platform - and CitiKey was one of the first available. In spite of the great idea and being around since 1998, the company is no-more as of today (22nd November, 2000) - as was publically announed here.

CitiKey had great potential - which is why I began engineering the first Palm version of the software (developing a proof of concept). CitiKey received $11.5 million dollars (US) in venture capital and received a number of awards in Sweden and Europe.

Nokia's new color phone-organizer

Nokia on Tuesday showed off an updated wireless gadget that looks like a cell phone on the outside but opens up into a handheld computer with a full keyboard for accessing the Web and email.

Nokia's dual-band 9210 Communicator, which supports 4,096 colors, is a new version of its 9110 model. The clam-shelled phone utilizes the EPOC operating system. It is unclear whether this model will see a US launch. However, Nokia is expected to release a Palm based phone sometime in 2001.

HandyGPS Springboard Available Soon

Nexian Inc. has announced that the HandyGPS Springboard will be available this month, making it the first Global Positioning System receiver Springboard to reach the market. It displays the exact time, date, position, and bearing. It also includes a navigation mode, which displays your position and traces it on the handheld screen in a graphic. This GPS system includes UbiGo mapping software, which has U.S. street-level maps. Pricing isn't available yet.

New GamePad Coming in December

World Wide Widget Works is producing a hardware clip on for the Palm III series and VII series that allows users to use the familar gamepad controls (4 way joy, 2 control and 2 extra buttons). They will release the unit in December for around $40. Existing games can use it with the installation of a Hackmaster hack - or the developer may directly interface with the software by obtaining a copy of the developer package, which they are selling for $89.

Listen to Content from Audible.com with Upcoming Springboard

Audible, Inc. and Card Access, Inc. are collaborating on the development of Audible Advisor, a SpringBoard to play the more than 26,000 hours of audio content available for download from Audible.com. The batteryless Springboard will allow users to access all of Audible's spoken audio programming. Content will be downloaded and transferred to the Visor during HotSync. It is expected to be available during the first quarter of 2001 for about $120. After rebates for subscribing to Audible's service, it will be available for less than $20.
