Cracked Palm IIIc Cases

I've received a few accounts of quality issues with the Palm IIIc case. Read on for more details. If I get a significant response on this issue I will try to contact Palm for their position on this matter. -Ryan

Seems there are a significant number of IIIc's developing cracked rear cases. Personally I've had one such case and it looks as if my second IIIc is developing cracks as well. Not sure what Palm's position is on this as I've read that several people have paid Palm $100 to repair. Clearly Palm should cover these repairs free of charge and should announce cognizance of the problem.

Details Emerge for Handspring's IPO

Handspring announced today that it would sell 10 million common shares priced at $19 to $22 a share during its initial public offering, the date for which has not yet been announced. They plan to use the $190.2 million for for general corporate purposes, including working capital. They have asked Nasdaq to be listed under the symbol "HAND".

In a related story, during an interview with the German site GNN.de, Worldwide PR Manager for Handspring Allen Bush promised French and Spanish Visors by the end of this year. He went on to say that Handspring is working on new Visors with color displays and wireless internet access, though no dates for release of these products were mentioned.

Apple Flatly Denies Rumors of PDA

In this article in the SJ Mercury News, Phil Schiller, Apple's vice president of worldwide product marketing, said Apple isn't working on a PDA at all. "We are focused on the personal computer space, not the handheld space, and that's that. I hate to use these words, but there's nothing going on.''

Conspiracy theorists could point out that Apple always denies that they are working on anything until it is released but it was rumored they were going to announce the device at this week's developer's conference and this statement doesn't bode well for that.

Outlook More Secure, but Also More Hassle

Microsoft announced Monday that it is adding additional security to Outlook to restrict the spread of viruses as e-mail attachments. One of the changes means that the user will have to manually approve all access to their address book. According to a statement released by Microsoft, "Users will have to provide approval for legitimate uses of Outlook automation such as Palm or Pocket PC synchronization -- this will no longer be a 'hands-off' process (users will have to click yes on a dialog box before synchronization takes place)."
