ZDNET has two good palm articles, the
first covers 3com CEO & Prez Eric Benhamou's keynote speech at
CES. He demonstrated a Palm/Cell phone hookup simply by beaming info to it. The
other talks about how IT companies have to start working on handheld projects, specifically for the Palm platform. The reason:
"With Windows CE beaten into submission, Palm emerges as the platform choice for handhelds."

CNET reports that Gates has been
touting the latest version of Win CE at the Consumer Electronics show. Palm Colors has a new
clear/graphite replacement case for the Palm III line. The USA today has an
article on the rapid and widespread adoption of gadgets and electronic toys these days.
Xircom has been
demonstrating a Wireless Networking springboard for the Visor at MACWORLD. The device will enable wireless Internet, e-mail and communication over a network. I just got a very scary set of pictures of a smashed Palm V in the
Graveyard. If anyone's out at the CES in Vegas drop me a
line and let me know what's going on with the Palm scene there.

The next meeting of the Los Angeles Palm User Group will be Saturday, January 15th at 10:30am. We will meet upstairs in Border's Books + Music in West Hollywood - but not in
Cafe Espresso (their coffee shop). The meeting will be in an area set aside for us near the music section. The address for Border's is 330 S. La Cienega Blvd. This
meeting will focus on several products which we weren't able to demonstrate at the December meeting and a new one: the OmniSky modem for the Palm V, the BackFlip modem for the Palm III/VII, and the TRGpro. If you have one, please bring a compact flash card to try out on the TRGpro unit.
See our
home page for more info.

User review...
TRG has started shipping their Palm Device, the
TRGPro. It runs the same OS (
3.3) as the other palms with flash upgrade ability with 8mb ram and Palm IIIx features yet sports a Compact Flash slot on the back, unlike the Handspring unit this is a standard CF slot and can utilize the CF cards currently manufactured for many devices of today. Example I can use mine with my Kodak digital CF card store pictures from camera pop into my Lyra MP3 player listen to a song, then put back into my palm to access information or backup/restore to the main unit (All with that little 64mb card), They also support the use of the new IBM MicroDrive 340 + MB drives available.
