CNET put together a
recap of the Handheld market in 1999. They point to 2000 as the year for PDA's and I have to
agree. 1999 saw the introduction of some great devices and products: The Palm V, VII, the Visor and many others. 2000 promises to be an exciting year for Palm with the Palm IIIc coming, new devices from Sony and others, OS 3.5 and the IPO. The article also mentions the HandSpring is planning an IPO and how Palm strengthened it's position against Microsoft with an almost 90% market share.

Track Data Corp. appears to be planning an online trading service that takes advantage of the Palm VII's wireless capabilities.
Here's the article. (What's interesting about this article is that Track Data's stock hit it's year high just for mentioning that they are developing a PQA! -@)

PDALive has 2 new reviews... Solvepoint PalmDock V - You have heard so much about it, and it being available on PalmGear.com, is it worth the money? Wrap5 MKII- After the Wrap2, PDALive.com reviews the Wrap5 MKII from i2i UK which might still be new to most of you. Also the SPUG has a review of Zorglub Soft's
Stock Manager.

As seen on
Slashdot this morning, there is a review of the OmniSky wireless Palm V/Vx service
here. The author gives a good rundown of the service and takes it through the NJ/CT area. I should be receiving a unit soon, hopefully, and we will have an in depth review here.

Applied Biometrics Products, Inc. announced today that they would demonstrate their Kryptic Pilot
TM fingerprint identification product for Palm Computing® platform devices at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2000). Kryptic Pilot is not just a fingerprint sensor, as you might think from its small size and low cost. The Boston Globe has a good
article on how Palms are catching on in the US Congress. Seems that the Palm has become a local sensation on the floors of DC. The article mentions that every one from Al Gore to William S. Cohen has caught the Palm Pilot fever. They credit the craze to the long list of phone numbers and busy schedules congressmen have to keep. Noticed the link on
PDA Geek.

review ... So, you want to do database development on your Palm Pilot, do you? Some would say it just can't be done. Armando Neves has other ideas.

This
article on
CNET talks about the recent report from
IDC that predicts the handheld market to triple in units sold by 2003. From the article, Annual sales in the "handheld companion" market, which basically encompasses all handheld devices that aren't cell phones, will more than triple from 5.4 million units worldwide in 1999 to 18.9 million units in 2003, according to International Data Corp. The predictable surge partly owes to the convergence of handheld devices and wireless technology.
Meanwhile, in the here and now, products from Palm Computing continue to dominate the market...
