Mike Cane beamed me the news that
C|Net has an
article on the next Palm devices headed our way in February, coinciding with the IPO. The Palm IIIc will feature a 256
color display, the 33mhz
dragonball VZ and
OS 3.5. The article goes on to discuss the challenges of incorporating a color display, such as battery life and cost, but mentions that Palm may have found some compromises they could live with. Palm will also release the Palm IIIxe, an 8meg IIIx. I personally would rather wait for a color unit in the V series, I love my Vx, and I don't want to have to give it up yet! How do you feel about the color issue?

3com beat Wall Street consensus estimates again partly due to booming sales of Palm Handheld computers. Read the full article
here. The bright spot was in sales of 3Com's hugely popular Palm computers, which have sold a total of more than 5 million units. Revenues for the Palm division, which is being spun off into a separate listed company, soared 77 percent from a year earlier to $260.9 million. On the other hand, ZDNET has an
article speculating that 3com's shares will go kaput once they spin off Palm citing that without Palm they look like a struggling company.

David Pogue, author of
Palm: The Ultimate Guide,
reviewed the Visor Deluxe over at MacWorld. He reviews the handheld from a Mac users perspective and does a nice job of describing the Visors strengths and weaknesses. Read the full review

Palm posted a
collection of print and TV ads on the
Palm.com website today. You can download and watch the two television commercials in QuickTime or .avi format. They also have a couple of Print ads you can check out. There's no mention or pics of the
stir caused by Palm's Billboard back in
April.

Here's an interesting
story on
SiliconValley.com. Kids and teachers at a Palo Alto High School were given free Palm VII's with unlimited wireless access in a Palm sponsored experiment. The kids had mixed reactions about the devices, but most found them useful. They were predominately used for email, schedules and movie listings. It's definitely a worthwhile read. These kids don't know how lucky they are getting free unlimited
Palm.net access!

TRG Pro makers of the 8 meg, Compact Flash enabled Palm device announced they have started shipping. Some Early orders are set to arrive this week, and they estimate orders placed now should be arriving in late January. Besides being able to use CF cards and even the
IBM Microdrive, one of the best things about these units is the enhanced speaker. I've seen one and heard of these in person the speaker can get very loud and plays .wav files nicely, oh and they can also dial phones.

AsiaBizTech posted an
interview with Palm's VP, Marc Bercow. They ask some interesting questions and they refer to Palm devices as terminals. Bercow mentions that Sony is working on a wireless "entertainment" device that will feature video, audio and the Internet content intended to penetrate the younger generation, a
gameboy killer perhaps?. He also talks about Palm wireless Data and voice convergence, something I think is long overdue.

Noticed on
PalmPower this morning that you can find Palm's S-1 filing
here via
FreeEdgar. This is the long (313 page) and detailed required report Palm filed for their IPO. If you dig through you can find some juicy bits of info. Palm has had some Computers stolen with secret info on them, Palm modified the Palm VII due to a shortage of radio crystals, and they spell out their development cycle: new products every 6 month and a next generation unit every 12. It's a long read but full of interesting details.
