Visor Platinum Returns from the Grave

There *IS* a precendence here, but only one as far as I know.
Anyone remember the HP Deskjet 500? It was one of the first
inkjet printers, which along with Canon was one of only two
injket print engines available (Apple used Canon). However,
the inkjet market was very slow, so HP decided to close out the
Deskjet 500 and dropped the price to about $350. The printers
flew off the shelves at that price. HP got smart and decided to
"undiscontinue" the printer and re-released it at the new price
permanently. And the rest is history.

Talk about a dead-on assessment of the situation.

Seriously, Handspring might have been better-off taking those machines, changing the cases, and shipping them off as Visor Neos. But then, I guess that would have necessitated new packaging, etc.

What a pathetic attempt at "news" from a once-proud, now-decaying company. I honestly wonder if even the Treo--assuming it's all it's reported to be--can save them from the Dead Companies Hall of Fame.

What a joke.

I've had mine about 10 months and hated every day with it. The paint is worn off in places, it feels like it's falling apart, and that clip-off cover is beyond a pain. Complete junk.

I've missed by Palm III everyday since I purchased it... but I needed the 8MB.

And why anyone would buy it when they can now have a Sony with 16 MB for the same price is beyond me.

You pay $40 more and get JogDial,MS expansion and extra 8mb RAM, it's not a bad deal i think.

LoL, they could repackage the damn thing and call it Visor X or whatever name they want, this way ppl will think it really is a new product, and Handspring is really not going to stop making PDA as soon as they think. But no.. I have to re-release the old Visors so you'll think that I have too much stock hanging in the warehouse collecting dust.

Anyone notice that in the TV show 24, the hero is used
a Visor with what look like an ActiveLink Module, while
the bad guy used a Sony Clie?

Good Point! Someone claimed that the good guys use Macs and the bad guys
use PCs, *including* Ms. I300, who we *thought* was a good guy. I can't
really tell PCs from Macson that show.

Nina *did* say the image was a few hours old and Jack said he just wanted
a rough head count of the bad guys, not exact postions.

It sure did look like they were using it as a GPS, though. Is there a
GPS/modem combo module we don't know about? :)

Meanwhile the bad guy with the Clie used it merely to look at an image of
the guy he was about to kill to comfirm his identity. Go figure.

Yes. They're identical, except for a very, very slight update of the OS on the ROM chips and the silver casing.

Maybe they just had a bunch of silver cases left over and are slapping them onto existing Neo guts? I can't imagine the production lines being very much affected at all.

Still, it's a nice machine if it fits your needs.

I think it might be disappointing sales for the Neo. I ordered the Neo and when I got it the cheap plastic case was awful and had minor cracks. I looked at the Platinum as a better constructed Neo. I ended up getting a Sony PEG-S320.

Good enough to sell the second most number of handhelds since the year the company started up and it is still outselling all the other companies. Complain all you want but the Visors have sold and sold well. Success speaks for itself.

I see the comparison of Palm to Handspring to be similar to Microsoft and Apple. You've got thousands of diehards who don't want to go with the big-brother/evil company and instead go with Handspring, just to be different.

I think that the company that produces the OS, sets the standards. Which is why I don't go with Handspring or Sorny (Stony), although the latter has caught my eye on several occasions.

Here's my take; Go with Palm if you want a PDA that'll have a lot of support (customer base), accessories, and upgradability. Go with Sony if you want a PDA that does everything you need it to do NOW, and in the very near future, regardless of add-ons. Go with Handspring to be bloody different.

Well I see the comparison of Palm to Sony to be similar to Microsoft and Apple. At least Sony des innovate and make quality product. on the other hand handspring only clams to be innovating and make crappy products.

As tempting as the "lost pallets of platinums" thing is, I'm willing to bet that at least part of the story is the higher style of the case. Many have pointed out how this is basically a Visor Neo, but think of this as a "special edition" Neo with a classier case.
