Fujitsu Creates 800x600 PDA Display

Fujitsu has developed a PDA screen with a 800x600 pixel resolution. The company also claims it will be able to show digital TV and have three times the number of pixels as existing LCD screen.

According to the Register, Instead of separate red, blue and green pixels of the kind found in today's LCDs, the Fujitsu system uses fast-changing colour backlights to allow a single pixel to display any of the three primary screen colours. The upshot is an effective three-fold increase in the number of pixels.

The company has just created early protoypes and does not expect to commercial availability for a few years.

800 x 600 may not be good!

johnwong @ 7/15/2003 3:06:32 PM #
I have a Samsung NEXiO S-160, which is 800 x 480, I found it difficult to hold in hand. Because the screen is big. the size of the device is big too. I don't know which pocket should I put?

The pixels are very small. My eyes are painful after long reading. Up until now, I still find no extra software for this hand PC.

I guess 640 x 480 is maximum for a PDA!

johnwong,

I think the article is saying that Fujitsu has taken basically the same real estate currently used to 3 seperate colored pixels and effectively used each pixel for 3 colors each.

If my assessment is true, then the screen sizes do not have to change, but the density/resolution would be 3 times greater. That's a welcome addition that could pave the way for much larger screens to fill precious handheld frontal space and retain sharp resolutions.

ok,

Currently on screens, if your screen is 320 x 320 that means that there are 320 red, 320 green and 320 blue pixel elements accross the screen. And you guessed it. That also means that there are 320 red, 320 green, and 320 blue pixel elements going down the screen.

What this technology does is allow for 320 pixel elements going down and accross, but then, if you want white, you open the pixel up on the red light cycle and on the green light cycle and on the blue cycle.

Sooo if this new technology were applied to the current Palm 320 x 320 screens you would actually have a screen with the resolution of 960 x 960.

How bout dat? Not to shabby huh? Well, the screen will probably look a bit different than what we are normally use to, but who cares at that resolution.

Actually the screen estate would be 320x960 since each pixel is divided in 3 colors, but only in one direction...

...and this is (not as good) already implemented, sort-of, with the ClearType technology.

This is a technique that fakes higher resoloution on TFT and other non-CRT screens by using the adjacent pixels with light-blue or light-red tones depending on which side of the main (black) pixel it is (extremly simpified).

Ah, well enough of the besser-wisser bull**** ;)

Precursor to the "Slate PDA"

RhinoSteve @ 7/15/2003 4:36:02 PM #
This is one more annoucement moving toward the rumored "Slate PDAs" that have been in prototype for a good while.

The biggest problem with Tablet PCs is they are too expensive and too fragile making them too risky for capital ownership. About the only thing they are good for is added magin of laptop manufacturers.

Make a "slate" style PDA with say an 6" x 4" screen, a thick and drop resistant cover, PalmOS with a full VGA resolution screen and you have a winner.

No, too wide. PDA's should always be able to fit into a suit pocket.

That's where the nexio and this new display fail. HVGA and higher resolution at the same proportion are where it's it.

Of course, a small square as seen on Palm OS PDA's have proven to be just big enough for most tasks.

800x600? WOW!

HOW BIG WOULD THE SCEEN BE??? In inches?

antikryst @ 7/15/2003 11:12:14 PM #
even in crt or lcd monitors running high resolutions, 800x600 would mean a large area in terms of square inches. how big would the pda be then??? 4x5 inches??? thats pretty big.

cbulock @ 7/16/2003 3:31:19 AM #
The article said that it was making 800x600 resolutions possible in the same size screens. The screens aren't getting bigger, they are just fitting more pixels into smaller spaces.

Rapidly Changing Backlights?

I.M Anonymous @ 7/15/2003 11:47:31 PM #
What the heck are "rapidly changing backlights"? OLED? LED? Color wheel?

Display size

hcamstra @ 7/16/2003 4:51:33 AM #
Why is this special? My canon IXUS has a 1,5 inch TFT screen with over 100,000 pixels, which is more dense. Or is it the difference between touch-sensitive/non touch-sensitive?

johnwong @ 7/16/2003 5:04:41 AM #
800 x 600 pixels = 480,000 pixels.
almost 5 times bigger!!

Colour depth

HiWire @ 7/16/2003 11:35:57 AM #
Any news on improvements in the range of colours displayed? I'm anxiously waiting until the advent of the 16.7+ million colour screen - that would be an awesome screen! And there should definitely be a way to scale fonts and graphics on web browsers and other Palm applications in the future, to avoid eyestrain. My dad is already squinting every time he uses the Clie SL-10 I bought him... no backlight :-(
