webOS v1.4 Update Due on Sprint Monday?

Sprint Logo A self claimed Sprint technician has posted a screen-grab of a upcoming Sprint update release sheet that shows Palm's webOS 1.4 update due early next week. This Precentral post details the disclosure, which if correct, could indicate that webOS 1.4 could begin to arrive on Sprint models as early as Monday, February 15th.

webOS 1.4 was talked up by Palm at their CES keynote this year. The update is said to bring on device video recording and editing, improved phonebook transfer, calendar and messaging enhancements and this update will supposedly lay the groundwork for Adobe Flash support. The full screen-grab is mirror after the break.

This SHOULD have been WebOS 1.0

I'll keep my fingers crossed that Palm's software people have fixed the lag issues, Classic-related instability and all of the other software glitches currently plaguing the Pre.

Ship another (big screen) form factor with iPhone or Droid-quality hardware and maybe Palm can still survive until 2011.

Allright, PIC faithful, my Treo is getting old. Do I make the switch to a Pre or Pixi and increase my data costs by $30 a month or do I find a nice used Centro or 755p? I tried one windows phone, better browser but less favorable overall experience.

Does this new update make it worth it? How good is the browsing experience, what are the tethering options? Or do I jump ship with something Android.

I have Sprint.

Well in Dec I just went from Treo 700P to Droid. Nice machine, does what I want speedily. However after about a dozen Palms I'm still debating getting a Pre or Pixi with my income tax refund. Played with Pre day it come out and guess winter boredom is getting to me. Hold up is the full price I'm locked into after upgrading to Droid. Droid in a nutshell, beautiful screen, very fast. Pims are lacking, not even close to what I'm used to on Palm. Sorta bummed out that all the Palm programs I paid good dollars for probably won't work on Pre or Pixi. If anyone is interested in a like new Droid let me know.
Thanks Rich

Why $30 increase? Are you not on a data plan now?

I'm jumping to the Pre + for what sounds like May on ATT. My Treo 680 is solid as a rock, but she's battle worn. I run all my business on the 680, and that must continue. Currently tether 3G with my wife's old LG Shine + my SIM.

My other choice was to get the HD2 and switch to WM. WM7 is reportedly coming to it. Superior hardware, but that could be another yr b4 coming to ATT. Palm just keeps tweaking the hardware and updating WebOS, so I'm going to give it a try.

If the PIMs are to weak and I cannot live w/o the shortcomings of the Pre, I may be forced to WM. I'm not confident that Android in it's current form is going satisfy real productivity needs. I've already waited to long to let it evolve. Hopefully when WM7 arrives, they won't have neutered it's business savvy in favor of another hip-hop oriented platform.

why not go to the store and play with a demo? and if you like it buy it and play with it for 2 weeks and if you still like it keep it. if not return it and get your money back - just make sure you ask about the return policy up front and get it in writing. also make sure you keep your old phone and do a frozen in time backup of all your data - just in case.

personally, i'm hanging on to my Centro and hoping that the iPhone comes to Sprint this summer.

Does anyone know if the free Pixi offer applies to a Pre purchased at full price? If so is anyone interested in a new Pixi?

Well, we won't know how good the new update is until it comes out. I for one have been using a Palm Pre since June and love it. The browser on the Pre is excellent and roughly equivalent to the Android browser but it doesn't support in page anchor tags like the one that PIC uses to take you directly to your comment after you post. I came over to the Pre from a T-Mobile G1 and have to say that the only thing that I really miss from it is the little trackball and that is only because in cold weather I have to take off a gloves to use my Pre's touchscreen.

While Sprint doesn't officially support tethering I tether my Pre to my netbook's Bluetooth with My Tether and it works very well. I use Sprint's $70 everything plan.

The PIMs are not as good as the old PalmOS PIMs but the Calendar makes up for it with its integration of multiple calendars from Google, Facebook, and other places. The Classic PalmOS emulator isn't really robust enough for daily use but it does allow you to hold all of your PalmOS data and run the occasional PalmOS app.

RE: pre

After 11 years on Palm, I've switched to Pre from Centro.
I am not happy.
1. Notes are not organized on import so they are useless.
2. Search function that would search across apps and notes and ALL address fields is gone
3. ePocrates still not ported to Pre
4. Still no documents to go for Pre
Sure it looks pretty, but I am thinking of jumping ship

xd,
That's what I'm concerned @. I use a lot of "categories" in various PIMs and the Pres that I have fondled don't seem to go there. I'm going to have to move on, but may have to try and skin the cat differently.

FWIW I wrote to Access asking for a PIM application (contacts, calendar, notes, memos) as good as the Garnet applications but usable on other platforms (i.e. Android). The reply was my request was sent to their development team and the request may get the ball rolling or words to this effect. No telling if this means anything.

I also saw Pocket Mirror now has an app for WebOS PIMs to sync to Outlook running on a desktop. Has anyone tried this? I don't want to sync to the cloud if and when I can get an unlocked Pre/Pixi in Asia.

RE: pre
xdreduardx @ 2/12/2010 5:46:54 AM # Q
I agree about the lack of organization being the deal breaker for me. But I am also thinking about jumping the Palm ship (after 11 years) because of this and I am thinking about a transition to a "platform independent" existence.

There are Homebrew Apps to replace memos. CryptoNotes is up for consideration.

But basically I went from Centro where everything works, to Pre - where nothing works. I am considering moving back to Centro and then to another platform.

ClassicNote is another homebrew app I am considering

Don't other sync-to-PC apps exist in the App Catalog? I thot I saw a few in there the other day.

RE: pre
rpa @ 2/12/2010 2:57:28 PM # Q
I don't want the cloud preferring to keep my data on my pda/phone and PC. It may be viable if you stay in one market like the US but international traveling will kill you when you get the bill for roaming data. Give me the Garnet PIM app and stringed texting app on a platform like Android and I will be happy. Palm OS is history so I prefer to have the apps I want on a platform that will not be specific to any one company. There seem to be many others at least on this site who want the same thing so where is the 17 y/o techie writing the app??

Putting one entire thoughts on the Internet requires a tremendous amount of trust. Some thoughts are meant to develop ideas. These ideas have come from many thoughtful people. Some of these people are no longer with us. Once the ideas go to market those people and families must benefit from their effort. We can do that because the Internet still contains their thoughts and should be developed as they would have wanted and capital earned from those thoughts belong to the individual and their families.

The cloud effectively publishes all thoughts into a digital medium automatically. Perhaps before one is ready to publish. Removable hard drives have a purpose.

Peace,

E-T

As far as roaming bills go, how does the Pre work with that? Do you really need to have data roaming on to use the phone? Can't you turn it off and just use it as a pda like you can an iPhone?

Chinese New Years, at best, is a 10-day celebration.

Something still smells.

OTR Global should issue another report.

RE: BULLETIN: Palm Halts ALL Production!
abosco @ 2/11/2010 1:08:15 PM # Q
Again, maybe this is a cultural difference, but I don't get it. Production is halted on the 14th and will resume at the end of the month... for a holiday?

Also, I don't trust Engadget. They shoot sticky wads on any Palm news ever since they executed their "open letter" word for word (and they still haven't made any money). And from reading the comments on article after article, you get the feeling that the Pre is the #1 smartphone in the world.

Like Windows 7, Android, and Palm? You'll fit in at Engadget. Like anything from Apple? Find somewhere else.

Palm's statement didn't clarify anything. At BEST it confirmed they are "managing inventory" thus are, indeed, overstocked with Pres.

Chinese New Year's begins this weekend. Workers typically get off LESS than a week vacation though the observance of the New Year lasts a couple weeks; that is, until the end of February.

Palm says they'll start production "after" the end of the New Year. They say they'll "ramp" it up from when they restart. They didn't say WHEN they'll restart and they didn't say what "ramp" means (like...uh...if things are gong gangbusters why aren't they just starting out "fulll steam ahead!", huh?).

Hey guys, I am in China and I can tell you things are already shut down. Factories close for at least 2 weeks as workers migrate home for their only vacation of the year. I can't believe Palm's production slowdown at Chinese New Year is even newsworthy as EVERYONE'S production has stopped if they make widgets in China.
