Treo 700wx Headed to Verizon?

Rumor: Engadget Mobile is reporting that the usually very reliable Rocafella (a poster on the Howard Chui Verizon forum) is reporting that the Palm Treo 700wx will be arriving for Verizon Wireless by year's end. This would nicely conincide with the one year anniversary of the original Treo 700w on Verizon's network. Historically, Verizon has often used the post-Christmas period to launch new handsets.

The Palm Treo 700w was the first non-Palm OS device to be releaed by Palm Inc. After a period of exlcusivity on Verizon, Sprint launched the 700wx this September. The 700wx's main upgrade over the 700w is a doubling of the RAM to 64mb along with a few of minor software enhancements.

It was to be expected, right? Everyone and their neighbor was complaining about the 700W's user-space RAM size and, as far as my feeble synapses can remember, everyone and their neighbor has said "700WX is better than 700W" even though they're pretty much the same (or, conversely and maybe more correctly, everyone and their neighbor said the "700W is not as good as the 700WX"...).

Doubled RAM...how?

Has anyone looked over PC board photos or anything to see if PALM installed a different larger RAM chip in the 700WX to get the larger user-space memory?

A 650 without an external antenna?

And more RAM, too - making the "methodology" behind the RAM "increase" even more interesting...

They presumably use the same RAM chip supplier for the 700w and 700wx, so the hardware itself will be pin for pin compatible. The only additional changes that would be required would be in software to address the additional memory.

...or are you suggesting that the hardware is the same but the software in the 700w is not set to address the additional memory?

No, I'm (sort of) "suggesting" (with little if ANY basis) that the "extra RAM" was actually obtained by disabling/removing OTHER built-in software of some type.

But that's why I asked - because I have little to no basis for that (unstated until now) "suggestion"!

Looking at the specs on Palm's site shows no real difference between the hardware at all. Is there any difference?

Superficially no, but electronically yes, as is usual for consumer electronic devices through their lifetime.

The 700w is rather stable "as is". The 700wx adds more memory which should only help matters...and that's not counting any minor interim bugfixes/updates that MS has released or additional tweaks Verizon might want to give them a leg up on Sprint.

Face it, we've seen two new Treos launched since the 700P and still no sign of a ROM update for the P. Definitely a sure sign of where Palm's priorities are...
