webOS v1.2 Update Discovered

webos v1.2 A few forum users at PreCentral.net have stumbled upon a unreleased version of webOS for the Pre. The newer webOS build was discovered via a Palm support and developer utility called webOS Doctor. Attempting to restore a Pre earlier today briefly resulted in it downloading and installing a copy of webOS v1.2. Palm has since quickly corrected the apparent slip up, however, copies are now making the rounds and new details about v1.2 are beginning to leak out.

Some of the new features spotted so far include a new version of the App Catalog with support for possible paid apps, user accounts and credit card transactions. Other small things such as some system tweaks, numerous browser refinements, data tracking changes and changes to the copy and paste behavior are also said to be in the mix.

There is currently no word on when the webOS v1.2 update will be officially released. The build leaked today is marked as: (Build Sprint.100.166 08/30/09 08:03) while the current latest release is webOS v1.1 labeled: (Build Sprint.76.143 07/24/09 19:44).

This is one messed up release process if an OS upgrade got out by accident. Outsourcing?

A deliberate accident staged to build buzz.

The poor soul humbly posts their own personal experiences with the shortcomings of WebOS in comparison to Garnet and gets torn apart by the Palm Apologists. Some things never change!

This post doesn't seem very humble to me. But then I'm probably just an "apologist." There is a thin line between a sincerely disgruntled user and a troll and methinks that the poster you are defending crossed it.

It's not getting torn apart if you only post once in order to say goodbye to a community of which you were never a part. It's pretty clear just by looking at the "poor soul's" profile that they only joined in order to post one negative review and then never posted again. Maybe the poor soul was just scared off by the mean old apologists. More likely, the person was a troll who got bored when the negative response wasn't entertaining enough.

Garnet is a piece of crap and should've been dead, dead, dead 7 years ago.

That "poor soul" if she was smart enough to create a forum account, she was smart enough to read a review and realize that the Pre didn't do those things before she bought the device. I agree with many of her points, lack of proper contact/calendar sync is why I'd never buy a Pre. I have no interest in "the cloud". I didn't need to buy a Pre to realize I don't want one.

A world clock sounds like an opportunity for a 3rd party app, and I'm sure somebody will write one. Pretty much nobody supports direct sharing of vCard/vCal info anymore. I think there's a Bluetooth spec for it (nobody does IrDA anymore), but I don't think very many devices support it, so even if the Pre supported it, there wouldn't be anyone to beam to.

Would it be nice if Palm added those things ... sure, but I have no expectations they will ever do it.

vCard is definitely coming, you can see the support for it in the leaked image.

Only in 1.2.0-0830: /resources/webOS/nova-cust-image-castle.rootfs/usr/palm/applications/com.palm.app.messaging/images/compose-attachment-vcard.png

A full listing of changed files is here: http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/WebOS_Doctor_version_1.2.0-0830

Those are just icon files which could be used anywhere from email to a contact list. I'm talking about beaming vCards to somebody standing near you. Maybe they'll add it, maybe they won't.

I was going to add "missing LED notifications" to my list o' lamentations earlier but I had the SNEAKING suspicion that was/is in the works, so I declined to list it.

Remote app wiping? SHUDDER! Shades of big brother indeed! As we've already seen from Amazon's Orwellian removal of 1984 from Kindle users' libraries.

That reminds me, it's about time for my monthly "Lefty, where's that non-cloud ALP device we're still eagerly awaiting!?"

If they remotely wipe My Tether, I'm going to be seriously pissed. If they use the remote wipe feature to fight the inevitable wave of webOS malware, I'll be able to live with it.

I could see them remotely wiping paid apps that use a subscription model MAYBE. But I doubt that's likely to happen.

Methinks Palm should state their policy clearly on remote app removal. As an end user, that would really sound scary to me.

Hey Palm! Where's my PDA with Wifi and phone capabilities?

^^ Indeed. I've mailed Palm PR seeking an official comment. Don't know if I'll get a quick response, being a holiday weekend though.

Remote app removal is nothing new. However, when it is there, it can be an opportunity for abuse big time. Just a matter of time before some consumer group sues when an app is removed over a questionable anti-competitive act under the surmise of security. This can be a PR nightmare if it is indeed in the Pre.

I keep on thinking of Palm corporate as a scramble right now trying to promote this beyond the regular Palm crowd. While I don't have hard data, I have a feeling that they are not getting back as much of the former Treo users they had in the past as they planned.

I'm all for a PIC front-page poll on "Why have you not yet upgraded to a Pre from your former Palm device (including all PALM products, Garnet, WinMob, smartphones & PDAs)?

bwhahahaha!!!! Freak, weren't you the clown who said the Pre was so much more open then the iphone?

Let's see, remote app removal?!?!?

Sounds more likely that the Pre will end up being more restrictive then the iphone.
