After last week's revelation that Palm has had a
linux project in the works over the past couple of years there was a good amount of speculation in the
following discussion that Palm could have a Internet tablet/UMPC device in mind for this new platform. Vivek Arya a Merrill Lynch analyst covering Palm thinks that Palm's long hinted
secret product from Jeff Hawkins could in fact be a UMPC. In
Arya's latest report he states:
While details of Jeff’s speech are unknown, we believe he could announce a new Palm product. Given Palm’s traditional expertise in mobile computing, we believe the new product could be an Ultra Mobile PC - essentially a small ultra-portable laptop with wireless capability.

Palm's new
corporate blog has posted a brief response in regards to some recent users' posts concerning the delayed 700p ROM update. In
today's blog entry, Paul Loeffler posted a brief update saying that a post addressing the 700p maintenance release will be posted to the Palm blog next week.
This latest update runs slightly contrary what was revealed in yesterday's news item. On Tuesday the 10th, Palm's Steve Sinclair informed TreoCentral member Bob-C that information from Palm would be forthcoming "...later this week". You might recall Mr. Loeffler's name from last month's story concerning a revised release date and a vague reason for the 700p's issues.
PIC will continue to monitor this situation closely and post any pertinent updates concerning the 700p's long-delayed update.

Rumor: All of the recent talk concerning the Treo 755p has focused on the device's availability on Sprint, with no details emerging regarding this new Treo being offered by Verizon Wireless. Now a
rumor report on Engadget Mobile mentions that the 755p will indeed be offered by the nation's largest CDMA carrier.
The usually-reliable tipster HTC Kid has given Engadget Mobile the info that the Verizon of the phone will be nearly identical to its Sprint sibling. The only thing possibly different would be Verizon's version having some sort of location-based services on the phone (an initiative that Verizon has been pushing recently).

Nearly lost amidst all of the recent discussion concerning Palm's
Linux and Garnet plans has been the latest chapter in the impossibly long-winded Treo 700p ROM update saga. Ground Zero for comments, criticisms, and unofficial updates about the myriad of issues plaguing the 700p and its eagerly-awaited update has been the TreoCentral message boards. TreoCentral member Bob Caruso (AKA "Bob-C") is maintaining a "
Palm Response Tracker" thread in the site's 700p forum regarding his ongoing dialog with Palm's very own Steve Sinclair.
In a nutshell, the 700p update has been delayed yet again due to not having passed either Palm's or the carriers' certification processes. Mr. Sinclair's note closes with the promise of a widespread comunication and a more precise release date from Palm later this week.

Palm has released a new over the air mobile backup solution on their
mobile web portal.
Palm Backup Beta will automatically save a copy of your Treo's data to a secure server every day, from anywhere you have wireless data coverage. The appearance of this service is sudden but not entirely unexpected, given the recent amount of chatter amongst the Palm OS user community predicting a strong push by Palm into wireless service-related offerings.
The service currently supports backups from Contacts, Calendar, Memos, Tasks, Blazer bookmarks, Treo phone app quick dials, and the call log. No desktop computer is required and automatic backup schedules are available. Palm does offer a brief listing of optimization tips for the service that is certain to expand once more users begin using this utility regularly.
Palm states that the service will only be free for a limited time. No word on the service's official launch data or its pricing. Palm lists device compatibility only with the Treo 700p, 680 and 650 and as always, an unlimited data plan is highly recommended.
